Have you pulled a gun in self defense?
« on: July 06, 2008, 01:26:03 AM »
Just trying to get an idea on the boards here.  I keep reading all of these statistics that a lot more people have used guns and not fired for self defense than have been used in crimes.  I'm not trying to start a debate here, just curious how many have actually used one and if you would share your story if you don't mind.

Ron

edit:  I'm going to add this poll to a couple other forums I frequent.  If you see it on another board, I ask that you do not respond there if you already did here.  Then I'll look at compiling the answers after a couple of weeks and see what I can come up with.

So, after the responses on other forums, I've realized there are some people that do not really want to share their experiences that much.  I can understand and I am not trying to pressure any one to do so.  I'd just like to get some numbers if possible to help convince other family members about the advantages of having a firearm.

Hello ronrdrcr, I voted pulled but not fired.

The short story is I married young, lived in the "mill house" district of north Charlotte, (not a good section of town), wife and dog woke me up, middle of the night, to noise at the back door, grabbed my .357 Rossi M971,  went to the back door, heard someone attempting to pry open the door, dog started really barking, I yelled something to the effect of, you better stop, the cops are on the way,(wife called 911), than the window by the back door had a face in it looking at me, I drew down and yelled again, and he went away down the driveway.

Cops came to the house, told me they picked up "a person of interest" walking nearby, gave a description, and they filed a report.

Police never asked about my  firearm, or anything else, especially after seeing the damage to the door jam.
We moved a month later. Thats it. Adrenaline, fear, anger all that was going on and I remember having tunnel vision on the back of the house, had the door flung open, I would have fired.

Interesting post.  I think for that brief second the BG was looking at the barrel, he thankfully moved on.

Stay safe. Good luck on getting some numbers.

Perhaps you should consider modifying or restricting the survey.  Because....I've had to go to my gun three times that I can remember and definitely pulled a boot dagger once.  Twice at home:  Once in Louisisana way out in the country, no less, with an illegal then once here in Oklahoma in a development outside of Tulsa.  Both times at home in very, very safe environment 20 miles from the nearest "trouble" area.  Then once on the side of the road...long story but if someone were to tell me 3 times he was going to shoot me and was holding a gun I wouldn't wait for him to rack a load and point an SKS with a 30 round clip at me....that was outside of New Orleans and a couple of "road pirates" stopped to "help" me with my steaming vehicle.  Never, never, never travel around New Orleans without a weapon...unless you like being robbed, laughed at, beat to hell, pissed on then maybe killed.

The dagger episode was in a parking lot at work at 7:00 AM and the clown had 4 laptop computers hanging off him, was 6'6" and high out of his mind.

In each case I was aware of my surroundings and identified the danger before I could be surprised.

Also...you're probably only looking for non-military actions in the U.S.  for your survey.  Just a thought.

Which is the reason I posted it this way.  You don't have to give any information, but if you want to you are welcome to.

My late father was LE for 32 years in Long Beach, CA.  In the line of duty, he only pulled his gun twice and on one of those times he got in trouble for it (shot at a 6'8" car jacker who when he left the car tried to hit him with the stolen radio).
