Lever Action Self Defense
« on: March 25, 2009, 10:24:39 AM »
I wanted to comment on how much my girlfriend and I appreciated the episode that covered self defense with a lever action rifle or carbine.  I have a Legacy Arms (made by Rossi) Puma in .454 Casull with at 16" barrel that I bought with the idea of security in the woods while camping or exploring.  It's awesome!  It's handy light and holds 8 rounds in the magazine.  More than enough (hopefully) for any backwoods encounter.

Well, my girlfriend just LOVES this carbine and shoots it well.  Though she knows how to shoot and operate my AR15, Mini-14 and AK47, when talking about a carbine that she would be comfortable using for home defense, she kept saying "The Puma!"  I was hesitant at first.  But when we both watched the episode on lever action home defense, I had to agree.  If that's what she is comfortable and compitent with the Puma, that's going to be her bedside gun.  Of course, for home defese, 454 is overkill, so we keep it loaded with .45 Colt Winchester Silvertips.  She also has a Taurus Judge in her nightstand which is loaded with the same rounds after two rounds of shot.

Though I still would reach for my AR15 in a crisis, I know that my girlfriend can back me up or if I'm not around, defend herself with confidence using a lever action carbine.

Great show!  It helped with our home defense decisions.

bart,

I have the Puma 454, too in 18 inch, ported barrel.  I also changed the sights to peep and front blade (had hi viz that I didn't like).  I also moved the sights as far back on the receiver and as far forward to improve sight radius.

Here's some pics.

OOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Nice sights!  I can see why you like that!  They only made the 16" 454 in stainless steel, which is nice, but for quietly hiking the woods, I would have preferred a not-so-eye-catching blue finish.  I may someday send it to Robar for a stainless steel blackening.  But that will have to wait.

As for sights, my girlfriend and I do like the hi-viz sights and the layout of them.  However, I do like ghost rings and like the way you executed the sights on yours!

Yeah, I got rid of that safety.  I was always afraid the damn thing would be on when I needed to shoot.

The hi viz are nice but I guess this old dog CAT :) is used to more 'normal' sights cause I kept looking AT the hi viz instead of lining them up.

I also had the plastic follower on the spring in the ammo tube replaced with a metal one.

My daughter practices with my Marlin .45 Colt Cowboy rifle regularly. It is our "Artillery" if someone tries to get us in our safe room. I like my shotguns but I have yet to find anyone that thinks the recoil of a 250 grain LRN out of a carbine is too much for them.

HAZ i never could get that 454 puma. I have tried and no one has one, i had to get a 44mag instead. I would have been nice though because I have plenty of 45colt  and 454 for my raging bull.

Haz, I am SO jealous of that Puma..... Though I think I'd want the 16 inch barrel. Actually, I'd REALLY like one of each. LOL

It's a 20 inch but they may have the short carbines.
