50 gr vs 55gr in .223?
« on: January 25, 2010, 10:40:33 AM »
I just bought a box of el cheapo Remington UMC 50 grain .223 hollow points at Wally World. They seemed to shoot fine out of my AR. However, I was playing at only fifty yards (the 100 yard range was full) and I have zero clue about impact. Are these OK for SD or should I seek out .556 55gr hollow points?

I doubt that + or - 5 grains is going to make much of a difference out of an AR-15 from across a living room. I wouldn't want to take a hit from either. I think you're good to go.  Bill T.

The fps difference will be irrelevant, whether it's 18ft or 50 ft. If the BG is beyond 50 ft, even 25yds. The result will be the same. That's like point blank.

Where's the "G" gun? ??? ?

Expecting zombies?

Than there are always the 12g options.....for SD...

That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

Patterned that one too.3" #4 buck, forty pellets at 15 yards. Wouldn't want to be standing there. ;D

I will mimic most comments here, but 50 vs 55 is a 10% increase in weight which will show at longer ranges, with minimal velocity difference. In close, cool, at 250 yards, noticeable difference.

That is a really good group with the #4 buck, not widely known for grouping even at 15 yards. What brand?

You misunderstood my post Operator. I was shooting 3" shells, not scoring 3" groups. They were all over the target. I have seen, on BoxO'truth.com that low recoil 2 3/4" tend to group very tightly at close range. Right now, I'm just looking for an SD load, across the living room to across the street. I am auditioning #4 buck, 00 buck, and triple aught buck in standard and reduced recoil as well as 3" and 2 3/4". Any input that could save me time and money would be appreciated.
