Never memorized the Grunt stripes.  Is he an E5 or E6?

Navy, he'd be at least an E7 to be a DI...

Lot of E6 types kicking butts when I was in boot...  Granted, that was some 40+ years ago, but I don't think it's changed.

I was the same way with Navy rank.
Simple rule of thumb that kept me out of trouble, if the rank was on the collar it got saluted, on the sleeve not.  ;D

Of course the easiest way to get a hard look at the Chief's Board is be a Recruit Company Commander.  That and Silver/Bronze Stars with V's is pretty much a guarantee you'll get Anchors, unless you've had a DUI.

My RCC's were both Chiefs but our sister Company had a First and Second (E-5/6) BM2 was a MEAN SOB from either Ireland or Scotland with requisit accent.  "WUT THE ELLL R U DOOOOOOO-ING RECRRRRUUUUUUUUIT!? GIT UR ARRSSE OVER ERE!"

E6 is a First Class CR.....E7 Chief, E8 Senior Chief and E9 Master Chief.  At least since the 70's....prior to that I don't know.  I made E5 Second Class but didn't want to extend to sew it on...got out a Turd (E4)...
