You are going to have to make it plain to me what's so good here. Fewer mirrors for better clarity? Faster processing?
Also, my wife is a Canon person...do they have anything comparable?
It's...it's...it's a Nikon! Seriously, though, it has a larger sensor than my current camera, which can mean much better low light performance and overall image quality.
Mirrorless cameras don't need to make room for a mirror, so the body can be much thinner than an SLR (single lens reflex) camera. An added benefit is that adapters can be made that will allow you to mount just about any SLR lens and it will work. The adapter just needs to be the correct depth to allow the adapted lens to focus properly. Some will even autofocus.
Also, notice how huge the lens mount is? That is going to allow much better light transmission to the sensor.
I will not be able to afford one, but I can dream, yes?
I believe Canon is working on a mirrorless camera with a similar sensor size. They already have a mirrorless system with a smaller sensor.
P.S. The mirror in an SLR is not involved in the picture taking process, just in framing the shot and focussing. It flips up out of the way when the shutter button is pressed, which is why the viewfinder blacks out during the exposure.
