Shooting lefty from the driver's seat
« on: May 06, 2020, 02:42:23 PM »
New member and southpaw.  1911 guy

Lefty question. A bad guy approaching the driver's side of a car will (probably, though I could be wrong) try and get into the blind spot of the mirror, at your 7 to 8 o'clock position.  Being left handed, what's my best reaction, assuming I can't move the vehicle and a defensive shot is the solution?  Or do I just practice that shot right handed?

I've done a little research (Pincus etc.) and haven't been convinced of a solution for this very specific problem.

Either learn to use your right hand or pre pay a grave plot.
Only a total fool would consider shooting to the left rear, left handed.
In case you haven't noticed you don't bend that way.

I'm ambidextrous so it's easy for me to be a smart-aleck about it..... but I won't....

We all have to train for every possible scenario and it's the same problem if you're a right handed shooter on the passenger side. In both those cases and if you're stuck, the option is to shoot with your weak hand or lean to the side to give room for a draw/presentation.

My wife and I practice this scenario from time to time simply by sitting in a chair and use target stand to simulate door and windows frames and of course the bad guy.

And of course, the question is.... in your vehicle..... how do you carry/transport the gun. Is it in the holster and easy accessible from the strong side... or do you have it accessible out of body.... in the console or placed under the steering wheel or otherwise easy accessible.

Always practice worst case scenario where you can't get out of the situation by simply driving away which of course is the best case scenario. Avoidance, avoidance, avoidance.....

Any one who's been on here from the old days will tell you, no one ever wonders what I mean.   ;D

In the Book of Face, Customer Service Manual, how to recognize someone who is blunt and hurts users feelings, they put a picture of Tom.

If there is a Book of Face post office, then that's his picture on their wall.

Probably the truth where ever the Butt Zuckers lurk.
SOB's have 2 of my accounts blocked and I can't find the password for the 3rd.
Almost mad enough to call NSA or Google and ask them. ;)

That's kind of what I figured on the tactic.  My draw in the car is next to the seat belt buckle, but not so it would interfere.  This was the forum to reach out in if there was any good info out there.  I know there is no bendy the wrong way in life, so thanks for re-clarifying have to remember that we have to work in the world we live in and by its rules.

My grandfather always said (WWII bombardier, Europe, D Day, PH, Sil.Star, Brz. Star, DFW x 3)  "You never get in trouble for something you don't say."  But often, from my experience, boldness wins out. It's hard not take advice from a guy who carried a piece of steel back from the skies over Ploesti in his face since 1944.

Which probably goes a long way toward explaining your screen name I bet.   ;D

Carry in cars is a PITA . Where you normally carry is either obstructed, or your arm is blocked by doors and seats.
The only things I've found to work are shoulder holster, or IWB cross draw.
But I'm a righty.
Best advice I have is what I said before, learn to shoot right handed, and stash the pistol in the console.
Then you have the space to aim to either side .
Then adjust your inside mirror to watch the "blind spot"
