What's your everyday carry rig? (Was hiking with handguns)
« on: October 30, 2009, 06:56:29 PM »
The HWH thread showed pictures of the "man bag/holster".   I made one of my own many years ago, but it was rather crudely sewn though I regret throwing it out.  I replaced it with a Compaq carrying case for an external disk drive.  It fits my PPK/s almost perfectly.  (And when someone asks me, "What's that?"  I tell them the truth,  "That was made for carrying an external DVD drive for a laptop.")

I have several carry situations.  I work in a place, restricted by law from carrying, so I can't carry into work.  I need a place to store it in a vehicle, as well as a holster that I can put on and take off easily.

Here it is closed up.  Next to it are my IWB holster for everyday, in and out, off and on wear.  And what I refer to as my "formal"  holster (thumb break Bianchi)  for when I know I'm not going to need to take it off.

Will work for ammo

Me, I use an el cheapo Galco, inside out IWB. I got it free with the Glock. I thought it would just be a place holder till I got something better. Guess what? I love it. Its a soft inside out leather with a thumb snap. The only down side is that because its soft, reholstering is a two hand job. Still, its comfy and works great. Otherwise, I just stick the gun in a pocket. I have a pocket holster on order from Frisco, but even without it, it rides fine. I wear pleated Dockers, and with a folded bandana, my G 26 doesn't print. Yeah, there's something there, but it doesn't scream gun. I use cargo pants for hiking, and the pocket is below the the hip belt of my Gregory pack (North Face is a bit wider and might interfere). No worries, no unsightly bulge, just a nice 9mm, or a .38 j frame if that's what works for you, ready to go. If I wanted something bigger like a .357, I would look at a chest rig. But purely for SD, a 9mm in the pocket will work and it doesn't scare the neighbors. Not to revist an old topic, but for tactical and political reasons, I prefer carrying concealed to open carry (just my .02, carry how you want to). The thing is, if I'm wearing pants, I'm carring a gun. You just won't know it until I show it to you. That's the ideal at least, and I pay attention to my wrdrobe and outdoor gear to make that a reaity as best I can. I don't want want to make a political statement, I want an ace in the hole.

For the last 90 days or so I've been using a Shoulder holster my Dad made for me under a "fishing vest" I use the pockets for phone, 1 spare mag, (I have a 2nd on one in a pocket knife pouch just behind the holster tie down on my belt) Knife, note book, Pen, light and other pocket trash. The lumps and bulges of all the stuff in my pockets completely hides the fact theres a 1911 under there  ;D

Glock 27 in a Blackhawk SERPA CQC holster on a 13/4" Classic Old West Styles gun belt (extra thick).
Two spare mags in my left pocket (have not found a mag carrier that I like).

Sometimes my Colt Commander in a Ted Blocker IWB. Had the Ted Blocker for nearly 20 years and it is still a good carry rig.

TAB, Have you tried an extended thumb safety, I just changed mine and I can't believe how much easier it is to work and I have had no problems with it "wiping" off while I was carrying.

no, but I've never had a prob taking them off.  My thumb is on the safety when I grib the gun.

A 1911 still needs to have the grp safety depressed and the trigger pulled for it to go bang.

While I don't recomend it.  it is perfectly safe to have the safety off, while carrying.   Infact its safer then say a glock which only needs to have the trigger pulled for it to go bang.

Lucky for all of you, no porn of actual carry ...

I carry a s&w 442-2 Airweight in .38 +P in an Uncle Mike's Sidekick in my right front pocket, and I carry a s&w 1911 (gov.) in a Bianchi iwb on the right hip.  I have removed the snap tabs from the Bianchi.  I also carry a Surefire 6P in the left front along with a 3" lockback.  Knife is nothing special, but it is a handy tool.

After MB's podcast a couple weeks ago I have renewed my search for a SafePacker (actually penny search for the purchase).  I have also been looking at some cheap kydex holsters for mounts inside vehicles.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.
