The Federal Government should stick to things it needs to do to provide a national government.  Common defense (that's being dying of "a thousand cuts" now), a common currency that isn't printed on toilet paper, roads, bridges, regulating large financial systems, etc....all things the government is being graded more and more poorly on each year.  These things that do provide a national value are contrary to what the politicians want to spend money on, i.e. things that buy votes and provide power.
