Ruger mini 14 mags and rust

Something that works quite well for preventing rust on small items like mags is putting them in VPC (vapor phase corrosion inhibitors) bags or wrapping them in VPC paper.

You can actually protect larger items too.

It's the brown paper that brake rotors are wrapped in. It gives off a vapor that coats surfaces preventing rust formation as oxygen doesn't reach the metal surface. Also comes in liquid and powders.

You can actually use it to protect everything in your gun safe. Several products you may currently use are probably based on VPCI.

It is becoming more popular today and several sources are available. I have purchased several products from Cortec that have all worked very well.

Thanx for info guys. So what Ive done is degrease all my mags cleaned them all and treated half with wd40 and the other with clp. Now only time will tell. But I was wondering some sort of spray on finish could also help this problem.

Wally-World, here anyway, sells Winchester Rust Inhibitor, in a spray can that also contains CLP.

Here in the swamps, desi-packs in the strong box, hanging Damp-Rid packs, and an extra bit of TLC on my Blued stuff, including extra TLC a couple times a month.

+1 on the Birchwood Casey Stuff. Another one we use in the marine industry in a spray can is T9 Boshield, developed by Boeing.

I guess I'm lucky, I've never had a rust problem, with any of my guns or gear.  On external blued metal surfaces, I apply a generous coating of car wax, something I learned to do in the police academy 40+ years ago.  All of my arms are secured in climate controlled safes, in a climate controlled house.  I even use a silicone cloth to wipe down my stainless stuff.   My home is in the Pacific Northwest, which has been known to be damp. 

In the meantime, as things have progressed, I go stainless, parkerized or polymer when I can.  Among my collection of Mini-14 (and AR) magazines, I have waxed steel, stainless and polymer magazines.  Same deal with pistol mags.

WD 40 is OK for non moving parts, in fact it is perfect for this application. (on the out side, it will gum up the inside of the mag )
But what I use is BreakFree, inside and out.

WD-40 is not okay for non-moving parts!  the problem is that it kills primers.  Do not ever get it even close to your self defense equipment!  Other than that it is fine.

I bought 3 TAPCO 30 round mags through Sportsman's Guide a few weeks ago. They seem to be sturdy, and the base-plate removes easily for cleaning.....HOWEVER, the original ad on the website stated they had steel reinforced feed lips but after they arrived I noticed that they DO NOT have steel lips as advertised. I contacted Sportsman's Guide to alert them and they have since corrected the ad page.

They have a lifetime warranty through TAPCO, and were only $40 for a three-pack, so I decided to keep them.
If they function reliably, I may use them as seldom-used truck/go bag mags because they won't rust.

Ever think about just replacing the Mini-14 and Mini-30?

The mags are brand spankin new. I have only had them 9 months.
