Museum Ships Weekend
« on: April 10, 2016, 09:33:22 PM »
Whoever is ham here are you participating in Museum Ships Weekend?  If you have a shortwave radio you can listen in.  So far, there are 76 79 85 87  94 ships signed up and we've a month and a half to go.  We'll probably hit 100+ ships by then.  The ham club for the Battleship USS New Jersey sponsors this each year.

Last year I had 34 contacts...trying for more this year.  Shortwave listeners can have fun listening in but I don't know which, if any, of the museum ships has a QSL card going.

Here's the link:  http://www.nj2bb.org/museum/

In the past I've spoken with people on the USS Nautilus, Queen Mary, NSS Savannah (US nuclear cargo ship) and a bunch of others.  I never have gotten to the USS Missouri in Hawaii...almost, but not quite.

Anyone here ever stationed on or lives by any of these Museum Ships?  Some of them have completely restored radio rooms and you can probably swing by and listen to what it's like to operate an HF radio like yesteryear.  Here's the list so far this year:

Seems odd to see an "Iron clad" on the list.

First, I didn't realize there were so many museum ships.   Boy did my bucket list just get longer.

Almost makes me want to get my HF antenna up in time.

Too bad the Redoubt submarine isn't on the list.  Just read about it.  Biggest museum sub a civilian can tour.

Will work for ammo

Tom I thought the sailing ships were odd and then they had a PBR added last year.

Alf, get the antenna up.  Gee, 50-100 feet of wire and some coax....
I sent you a couple of emails directly with what I hope is some helpful antenna information....

Don't have an HF rig yet - still paying off a truly stupendous and outrageous vacation last Christmas with all 3 boys - but I do have a Tecsun 660 so I will be listening in.

That's what I did two years ago.  I was sick the entire time that I didn't have an HF rig set up.  You will be sick too....I promise you.  I got a used rig and a wire up and voila'!

More than enough time to get your General license if you do it now.  Study on eHam, QRZ or any other number of places....you have the time if you hustle up right now!!!!  I think you also have some voice privileges on 10M up to 28.500 along with the 6Meter rig.

MB used to be a Ham....methinks he gave all of that up.  I think having communications ability is more important than ever right now.  I've got a 15M, 20M and 40M wire in the attic and can tune in 17M easily along with 80M and some difficulty.  No one around knows I talk all over the world on 100 watts....

I also read where the USN is training in the use of sextants again....I'm just sayin'......

I'm looking into an inexpensive SDR (sorry, software defined radio where all of the signal processing is done by software instead of hardware) based on a Raspberry Pi or Arduino. Cheaper than the $800+ new, but I may find a used rig at the Louisville Hafest. That's not til September though . . .

Hi;

RASTUS,  I did HF work when in the Military and decided that I did not need to pursue it when I got my ticket. I use to monitor  14.313  and adjorning freq's - that made up my mind.

I am more interested in what is going on within 1-200 miles of the QTH that what Fritz, Sean, Pablo or Mohammed has to say !
