SAAMI does not specify which size primer must be used in any given caliber. Obviously very small ones like .25acp aren’t big enough for LPP. The general rule of thumb in pistol ammo has been anything small than .40 cal the manufactures uses SPP. anything larger, LPP. But that’s like The Pirates Code. More of a guideline. In a short, though fat case like .45ACP, SPP works fine, so several manufacturers have for a number of years produced .45s with SPP instead of the normal, original LPP. Only reloaders really notice. They’re more common than many imagine.
Not only do you hate crunching a large primer when running a batch of large cases and a small case gets in there, but even worse is when running a batch of small cases and a large primer pocket one comes by, then small primer drops out. You might not notice until you see powder all over the press.
