Latest 3D printer SIEVE project
« on: March 23, 2024, 11:31:30 AM »
Never been happy with commercial devices to separate tumbling media.  Ground Walnut hulls in my case.  Tried the big rotary thing.  Tried the sieve top on the tumbler.  None worked to well.

Made a small square sieve and used a $2 pooper scooper which had possibilities but the small size didn't lend it's self to 300+ loads.

Made a large round one that's the size of the opening at the top of the viberator.  Works great.  Easy to pour everything into it without splashing a lot of media about.  Then rotated around a dozen times and voila all the media, and .22lr shells, are in the bowl.  Oh and I use those medical, bedside potty buckets to hold everything.  I might even use the stand rather than set it on my chair.

Being a little prideful.  I think I did good with this design.  Pretty evenly spaced.  Just right number of vertical ribs.   Kudo's to any one who can find the one thing I didn't correct.  And the two colors is because I ran out of filament and my backup roll was a different shade.  And yes the ribs stop before the top on purpose to allow future matting with a large funnel if I want.

Good design.
A few more additional steps and you'd also have the makings of a good wet tumbler barrel.

The second column of ribs is a little shy of the rest, but everything else looks to me like a pro designed it with CAD. Outstanding!

Over on THR a guy posed a .45ACP LPP vs SPP sorter design.  I'm getting back into .45 soon so I got a copy of his file and printed one.  There's a stud in the bottom of each cell that only fits in the LLP hole so the SSPs stick up as you can see in the picture. You do have to de-prime first.  (The blue color is not a tip to Dillion, but it was the least used and largest roll of filament I had)   Just so happens I only had 7 pieces of empty .45ACP brass and one was SPP

Well gosh while I'm printing that how about a way to keep my moon clips organized.  Currently they're in plastic boxes but they are loose and tend to get jostled.  So I printed a holder that custom fits the box and holds the "mooned" moon clips as well as the unused ones.  I printed it in half size and one in 2/3 and 1/3 of that so I can customize the storage depending on the situation.   For a local steel challenge match I only take 33 clips.  For a full 8 stage match 43(it's all I have).  Same with USPSA.  The idea is not to have be doing any mooning (go ahead let the jokes fly) during the match.  Oh and these holders fit .45ACP (625 Revolver) too.

Not being a reloader, it took me a minute to realize LPP vs SPP meant Large primer pocket vs, Small primer pocket. At first I thought it was something to do with whether the cases had primers in them or not, (which you cold also make a sorting tray for) but you said they had to be deprimed, and I was like, oh, now I get it. I wouldn't want to be around when someone tried ramming a large primer into a small pocket. :o  I can't imagine anything good coming from that. They seem to be rare in .45 ACP from the little bit I've seen, and more common on the higher pressure rounds based on it like .450 SMC, that I believe uses small RIFLE primers, but I could be completely wrong about that. Anyway, very cool idea, and it just happens to be in my favorite color.

SAAMI does not specify which size primer must be used in any given caliber.  Obviously very small ones like .25acp aren’t big enough for LPP.  The general rule of thumb in pistol ammo has been anything small than .40 cal the manufactures uses SPP.  anything larger, LPP.  But that’s like The Pirates Code.  More of a guideline.  In a short, though fat case like .45ACP, SPP works fine, so several manufacturers have for a number of years produced .45s with SPP instead of the normal, original LPP.  Only reloaders really notice.  They’re more common than many imagine.

Not only do you hate crunching a large primer when running a batch of large cases and a small case gets in there, but even worse is when running a batch of small cases and a large primer pocket one comes by, then small primer drops out.  You might not notice until you see powder all over the press.

Not being a reloader I had no idea the primer pockets in some pistol ammo are different sizes.  I have some reloading equipment for TEOTWAWKI but I have yet to set it up.  That was a good piece of information.

The world of .45ACP reloaders hates that there are two different sizes brass.  However, we are split about 50/50 on which size it should be.  A lot would like to just have SPP so they only have to stock one size primer and not to have to change primer handling on their press when going from 9mm to .45.  The other half like the traditional LPP for .45ACP.   A few thinks there's a performance difference but can't document it.

There are a number of gotcha's in the specs.

In most rimmed cases an undercut of the rim is allowed by not spec'd.      Also SAAMI doesn't spec the size of primer holes.

Oh Great Retired one, when are you going to start marketing your products for us who aren't into manufacturing?

That may be the same reason some manufacturers us SPP in .45 ACP. And from a production standpoint, small one use less materials than large ones. Not much, but if you're making them by the millions, there has to be a cost savings there too.

One primer to rule them all!
