Great episode.
I really liked a couple of comments by Gene Pearcy.

Paraphrased of course:

One was , "These things are so cheap, that you can trade a chicken for them in some countries."

The other was, "They are great guns, but I'll never own one simply because of the anti-American message I think they speak."
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

"When it comes to the enemy, just because they ain't pullin' a trigger, doesn't mean they ain't totin' ammo for those that are."~PegLeg

I'm guessing you are not a very experienced center fire rifle shooter.
Compared to a .22 or .223 it may be fairly "powerful and destructive", compared to a .308, a 30 - 06 or most other calibers for deer or larger it isn't that impressive.
The little 125 grain bullet is pretty much at its maximum performance taking deer.
Now that you have seen how fun an AK is you need to expand you experience with other calibers and other types of rifles.
Research is a great excuse for a range trip.   ;D

That would explain why so many coworkers have started raising chickens... ;D

Loved the show one of the best. The sound of that rate of fire is so identifiable. This episode just reaffirmed this gun as my go to self defense rifle utterly and totally reliable does everything I need it to from 1" to 100yards and is still semi cheap to shoot with similar power to the new wonder cartridge 300 Blackout shh whisper. Not knockin the AR I love my heavy barrel varmint rifle I just don't think you should have to change the oil every 3000 rounds (or three months whichever comes first) on a self defense rifle. And before anyone brings up over penetration I have it stoked for the house with corbon's anti-terrorist round a frangible round with a thin copper jacket. Wish the show would have gone into the new upgrades to the AK and the Americanizing of the rifle by Krebs and others but that's probably more of a Shooting Gallery Show.

As far as Evil Roy's comments 1st MMM Chicken 2nd You great cold cold war patriot comrade great cold war patriot. But I was 9 when the wall came down dude. I guess it just doesn't hold the same provenance for me.

That's what I'm talking about people.

First, HUH!?! And secondly I was enroute from Basic/AIT training, ie at home on leave, when the wall fell and got into Germany two weeks later.  The party had just subsided when I got there from what I had gathered but the one year anniversary was HUGE.  As for the AK I share Evil Roy's animosity for many of the same reasons but most importantly is I expect a little more accuracy out of a battlefield rifle than what the AK delivers.  Sure there are sniper rifles built around the platform but they aren't issued to grunts and they may fire full of mud, water and excrement but I don't plan on packing any gun with crap and trying to shoot it.  To each his own and I may own an AK one day, just not today.

Jlawson I was commenting on Evil Roy's comments of 1. In some places in the world AK's are so cheap you can trade a chicken for one.
2. That he wouldn't own an AK because he thinks its unAmerican.

The first comments a throwaway comment. The second one is an acknowledgement that yes many people from the cold war/Vietnam era may feel this way. But to a younger generation this is just a tool that works. The history is interesting but we didn't live it and now SF and many contractors use AK's on our side in many area's around the world.
