Any recommendations on the belt width, i.e. the 1.5" or 1.75" as well as which stiffness might work best with a Smith and Wesson 686 (.357 stainless steel revolver)?
Match the belt width to the size of the loops of the holster.  With jeans, I wear a 1.75" Spec-Ops Rigger belt.  With dress pants, it's leather, either a Mernickle in 1.75" or a Rosen in 1.5" depending on how wide the loops are on the pants.  The stiffer the belt, the better.

I have been using Wilderness Tach. for some time. I like 1 3/4 "  in the tan. I have only one complaint, if you loose a lot of weight the belt can't be shortened easily like some leather belts.
