Savage 93R17 Scope Rings -won't tight on bases- help lol.
« on: February 12, 2009, 05:04:05 PM »
I purchased a Savage 93R17 BTVSS .17 HMR today. Yes I am super excited or was. I went to mount my weaver rings to the bases that came from the factory. Then, I tried to tighten them. I tighten them all the way... but even at full tightness..they are loose.  So, they slide forward and backward.. even though they are tight. I even tried another set of warne maxima rings and they do the same thing. Any thoughts? I've never had this problem before. The owners manual says "weaver style." Both of them have fit my other "weaver style bases" before... What am I doing wrong? ... I'm a Glock expert.. not a scope mounting one.. :-\

Shorter screws. Or cut the ones you have. Be sure you file or stone the burr off the ends of the screws before you put them back in or you will wreck the threads.
Speacking of threads are you sure the holes are clear all the way to the bottom ?

Like Tom said, check the holes. Shine a light down in there and see if there is an allen screw or something down in them.

An easy way to shorten the screws you have is to use a nut with the same threads (if you have one). Just thread it on and grind or file down to the nut and when you back the nut off it will chase the threads.

If you know what the threads are, you can get shorter screws at any hardware store or try a local gun shop/gunsmith.

They probably just sent the wrong length screws. I had that happen with a single shot rifle that came with a base and screws. They were all 1/4" too long and bottomed out in the holes. Ground them down and they worked fine.

You could also use shims under the bases. You can get the stock at Lowe's.

Good Luck.

I hesitate to post, because I don't have the porn right now ... However, I bought a FVSS last fall and had no problem with Weaver rings.  May sound like an echo, but a little work on the screws or threads may be in order.  I'm waiting for some more nice weather to play and put up a good target.  It got nasty too early this winter  :'(

Sorry no pictures.. at least for now. I need to learn how to get them to post on here. Anyway, umm.. I took off the bases and looked at the screws. I shined a light down the inside of the bore ..where bolts sits.. the screws are not bottomed out.. they could still be turned way more than they are.. so in other words the bases are super duper tight.. and screws could go way deeper if they had too... I did notice that 2 of the 4 holes for the bases ..did infact have metal shavings between base screws and the top of the barrel. So, I put it all back together and the same thing... the rings slide back and fort a little bit.. won't tighten.. So, then I took one base back off.. and put ring on it in my hand.. and the base notch ..cut out area.. it way bigger than the ring post part that fills that notch..   so u think a new set of weaver bases might work?...

Do the rings have an extra set of screws on the other side?
I had to ask (didn't think of it earlier) because I ran into this when mounting a scope on a CVA single shot .270 for one of my son's friends back after Christmas. Tightened everything down as usual and the rings were still loose.
My son said "What are those other setscrews on the other side for?".
There were two sets of base screws.

Now you got me scratchin' my noggin, Hawkfish.

Nope..  I've tried two different sets of rings too. One is plain weaver grand slam's.. single screw tightening at the bottom. The other only has screws on one side to tighten. Same results for both sets of rings.

Got me, if the screws are tight (18 in/lbs ) and not bottomed out the bases should not be able to move.

That's correct. The bases don't move. The rings move.. back and forth slightly
