Title: I Renewed My Carry Permit Today
Post by: tt11758 on February 01, 2010, 11:24:39 AM
While chatting with the secretary at my County's Sheriff's Office, I asked what could be done to get a permit renewed if one worked during the hours the front desk was open (8-5 M-F).  Her response floored me.  She said, "Like a driver's license, this is a privilege, so you have to abide by our hours."  Before I could think, I replied, "No, actually it's a Constitutional right, and it's NOTHING like a driver's license.  If it were like a driver's license it would be honored everywhere."  She gave me the evil eye and said nothing.  I did not go any further, either, since she had yet to hand me my new permit.

It just floored me.  2A rights are now a privilege?  Where the hell am I?

Good answer!

BTW -- Take the time to write her supervisor and give them an earfull.... if you can find an email, post it here and we will Ranger Up and do the same.

I know resisting the urge to slap the crap outta her was overwhelming, you did good......great come-back. Some people just don't get it.

I renewed mine (4th renewal, 20th year) back in September '09, and it took less than an hour total. And that was only because there were a few extra forms for the court and the sheriff, and I had to be electronically fingerprinted (had to go down to city hall, a few blocks away). It was the first time I've had to be re-fingerprinted since my first permit at age 21.

She is guilty of using an incorrect analogy and it appears that TT made his point.  I don't think she deserves to get beat up over it.  The reall issue appears to be the hours of operation and I doubt that she controls the hours applications are accepted.  If you want the hours changed you need to involve Sheriff and County commissioners.

TT made a good point, but I'd put money on it she just shrugged it off and forgot about it.

The whole point is the lackadaisical mentality and attitude put forth by those who are in a position where they should know better. That's what is wrong with the whole country these days.....too many people do not understand the difference between a right and a privilege.

I'll assume she was referring to the CCW as a "privilege" in your state.

Is Iowa a shall issue or may issue state?

Our local county clourthouse works late one day a week and Saturdays for those of us who find it tough to get out work during the work day.

Benjamin Franklin has been credited with this quote, "Men are most convinced by things they, themselves, discover."

Telling someone what to beleive seldom works.  If you don't beleive me, tonight, tell the person closest to you the 10 things they need to change.  Then share the results with us - I doubt you make it through the whole list.  If the people we love won't accept this from us imagine what happens if we do this to people we don't know.

Yes, agreed........and that disproves my previous statement how?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but you seem argumentative to the point that people who should know better are too lazy to care about finding out different.

Peg, I'm probably the one not understanding you - my apologies.  If I sound grumpy, I am, I'm home with a bad head cold so my attention span is that of a gnat (assuming they have a short attention span).

Maybe we were thinking more alike, but writing it from different standpoints...or something like that.
I wasn't berating the clerk, in and of itself, just that particular 'type' of people in society. Your assessment is right, it's the old "You can lead a horse to water" thing.......it just gets to me sometimes that there are so many 'horses' in society that ain't thirsty.

No worries.........it's been an off few weeks for me too. I know I have not been my normal self either (on the grumpy side at times). Doctor has me on a new high blood pressure medication and it has made me moody. Just ask my wife.

Iowa is "may issue," and the Sheriff can pull your permit for any whim he may have.  He doesn't need any reason except he wants to.  There are actually Sheriffs in Iowa that will not issue to anyone without court paperwork stating it is a safety issue.

Growing up in PA it was the same way.

The local sheriff claimed no one need to carry a firearm in his county.
He then failed to explain why he issued them to friends and political cronies.

They changed the law in PA to shall issue and cleared up that mess.

And just think, a National CCW Law failed by three votes.....

To me this isn't about politics as much as bureacrats. I don't know if licensing bureaus hire the lazy, surly and power hungy, or if they just put something in the water. The thing is this. It will get worse. In Fl., the state has, in the past decade, made great strides in making the DMV more "user friendly". Telephone appointments, drive through windows etc.. The reason is they didn't want to deal with a lot of surly folks who had waited an entire lunch break to stand in line. Still, budget cuts mean cut backs. Given they have the monopoly, they don't really care if you're happy or not. They get paid to be there 8 am to 5 pm. They would rather have you happy, but if you're a jerk, they still get paid. All you accomplish by bitching is to piss off the guy behind you in line who has ten minutes to get back to work. Its not something a clerk can change, its a question of whether you are willing to spend a few bucks more for the license/permit/whatever to have more lines open or to be able to renew on-line.

PS I think that if you are willing to pay an extra thirty bucks a year to have a personalized/choose life/ I love manatees/I graduated from the University of where ever-in-heck licence plate, I should be able to pay an extra $30 to get the express line. Just a thought. ;D

PPS I am all in favor of a requirement for a renewed finger print submission on a CCW. Its no different than a new vision test on a 10 year drivers licence. You could see fine/weren't convicted of a felony then, but now.....?

No point in a new finger print FQ, they don't change.

You're paying for the check, not the print. No need for new prints, just someone to run it again.

Here in New York State, your permit is good for life.  It's just no good in NYC.  NYC permits are good all over the state.   have a non resident FL permit, good for 7 years, and a non resident PA permit, good for 5 years.  I hope reason takes this country back someday, and I can carry anywhere as long as I have no felonies.

The background check cost me $53, which goes to the GBI for doing the actual check. The only real reason for being re-fingerprinted after 20 years was because Georgia is going to electronic files. It was the most time consuming part because I had to go to a different location from the courthouse and the machine didn't want to pick up the scans. The lady kept having to reset and re-scan because the computer had to "recognize" a certain amount of print area. Even with all that, less than an hour.

The electronic stuff actually sped up receiving my permit too. Used to take about 4 weeks to get it in the mail after all the paperwork and such. This time, I got it in 6 days.

Georgia passed legislation a while back that set time limits on the process. There have been several legal suits  in some counties around Atlanta because they like to drag their feet in the process (anti gun sentiment).

Actually the one thing I don't dislike about where I live here in California is going to the Sheriff's Dept for my CCW and renewals or changes.

They are actually friendly, courteous, prompt, I actually sent an email to the Sutter County Sheriff saying that he has a really great staff and they should be commended.

Albeit, one of them was recently arrested on suspicion of embezzling, but I never dealt with her.

A former Sutter County Sheriff's Department civilian clerk was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of embezzling $90,000 from the department, Sheriff J. Paul Parker said.

Lorinda Palafox Barrera, 46, who lives on Lariat Lane in Olivehurst, was booked into Sutter County Jail and will be arraigned today in Sutter County Superior Court.

Barrera was fired in December after an internal audit revealed discrepancies. She had worked for the department since 2002, said Parker.

While working in the department's civil division, Barrera pocketed cash paid by the public for permits and fingerprinting, then manipulated bank deposit slips, Parker said.

The thefts allegedly occurred between 2006 and 2008.

After Barrera was fired, a lengthy investigation began, including retrieval of old bank records. An outside forensic auditor assisted, Parker said.

Discovering the thefts through the department's own internal audit "doesn't assuage the pain," according to Parker, who said he feels "horrible."

"We are very saddened and feel betrayed that an employee who was granted public trust violated that trust," he said.
