Title: Naming Guns
Post by: blackwolfe on April 06, 2010, 06:15:37 PM
Does anyone here name their guns?  I named my first handgun "Maggie" as it was a .357 magnum.  I also want to come up with a feminine Swedish name for my Swedish Mauser.  Any ideas for that one?

Also looking for some Patriotic or Liberty themed names for some future single actions.

Some suggestions are:
Freedom
Truth
Justice
Honor

Any ideas?

I have a simple rule for naming guns. If you hold it close to you like a rifle or shotgun when shooting it, then that firearm is a female. But handguns are male firearms since you hold them at a distance and maintain a firm grip :)

i have a strictly mechanical relationship with my guns. once you start humanizing a machine a gun it becomes more than a tool and you end up having feelings for it.

Me and the lovely Mrs. (who is always right) have named some of our handguns because it doesn't make sense to use model numbers, etc. when discussing who has "guard duty".

Her S&W 686- "Smitty"
Her S&W 60 snub- "Little Schmidt" or "Baby Smitty"
Her nickle model 19- (you guessed it) "Nicky"
Her Ruger 161- "Roogie"
Her New Blackhawk 357 - "Cowboy"
My Sig Pro 2022- "Siggy"
My Sig Revolution 1911- "Big Siggy"
My S&W M&P9 - "Mikey" (or "Mikey Bane" - long story)

I have a quartet of 1911's, in .45 ACP.
They are named Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
When they sing, they sing gospel.

Milling machines have personalities ! I name every one of them I work on, The  only one that even "Hustler" would print is "The machine".
I do not, however name my guns.
But then I do not name my shirts or skivvies either.

I have to say TW, that's kind of like naming a Beagle or Great Dane "Dog".   ;D
However my 12 Guage may have become "Thumper" today, more on that this weekend  ;D

My son-in-law named his .308 "Butter" because of the smooth action.  His AR15 (which I now own since he lives in Kalifornia and is not allowed to own such a thing) is named "Envy" on account of it being green.  I have been inclined to call it "Kermit" for the same reason.

I used to get in my dry-fire practice with my 1911A1 by "shooting" at Dan Rather on TV.  (I no longer watch CeeBS.)  i was doing this one night and my wife says "You're always playing with that gun, does it have a name?"

The first thing that came to mind was "Roscoe", which was a Depression-era slang term for a pistol.  That's what I told her, and that has been Roscoe ever since.

Haven't named any of my other guns, although I do tend to talk to them..........

What were we talking about?   ;D

All kidding aside, Mrs. T named my 9mm "American Express" because I never leave home without it.

I have never named mine. Except to refer to the large caliber rifles as "the big boys", and all smaller caliber stuff including pistols as "the little guys". When I am dialing in to make a loooooooooong shot however, I always address my rifles as "sweetheart". Makes them feel loved, and I usually see improved performance.  ;)

I didn't realize that I had named any until I started reading this thread. A firearm should be taken out and shot as often as the owner has the chance, two of mine rested in the care of their last owners for many years. My maternal grandfather bought a used Colt Woodsman from someone he knew many years ago and shot it very little if at all. My dear wife talked my dad out of it for a Christmas present for me in 2008. A friend of mine passed away almost three years ago and I bought his Systema from his widow when she was selling his valuables that she couldn't use. His two electric cars and Ham radio equipment were bought by people he knew that shared those hobbys with him. Now that I am semi-retired 2 or 3 times a month I try to make it to the shooting club where I am a member and very often I take Charles and Grandad.  Aside from those two I have never given a name to a firearm.

Haz, it is a very desirable Argentine copy of the 1911.
Pretty sure (not positive) that it's another name for this.

Still haven't decided on a name for the Swedish Mauser.

For the single actions I'm making a list that includes:

Truth
Justice
Freedom
Liberty
Honor

Any more suggestions along this line would be appreciated.

Naming your guns does have a positive.  By saying did you bring "Betty" with you today?  No-one is the wiser.  But if you say Hey Jason did you bring your Beretta with you or how about your Walther we might need 'em for this vicious dog over here.  It has came in handy a few times.

With the help of this forum I have my pair of New Vaquero .357's named Whoop and Ass  ;D

There is my bullseye pistol, a Ruger Mark III cleverly named Mark, and he has since gained a matching brother I just call Three.

Most of the rest are just named F***, because that is what I say every time I test my marksmanship with them.

Majer,
I'll keep those names in mind,  I kind of like m58's idea for those along the AR line although Reckoning is growing on me.

If this post don't get the black helicopters circling I don't know what will.

m58, it will just add more helicoptors to the ones already present since I sent that "f*** the government" email to the regime.

And I wonder why my CCW renewal is taking so long.

Just back from the Prayer Request topic for Swoop, aka Shane Justice in real life and had the thought that  Shane is not a bad name for a single action six gun.
