Title: Luxury Yacht Engine Room Fire, and my Second Home For A While
Post by: twyacht on April 17, 2010, 01:42:59 PM
Late last year, the 161 ft. Lady Michelle had a bad engine room fire during sea-trials off Ft. Laud. Than to make matters worse, the fire control system failed and cost precious time before being manually activated. Than they opened the sealed engine room watertight door too soon, re-igniting the engine room, that the Coast Guard & Fire Teams put out with several thousand gallons of salt-water. :P

The company I work for landed the job and I have been on her since Feb. 1.

The original owner walked away with an insurance check for $24 MILLION DOLLARS....The Insurance co. sold it to the new Russian owner for peanuts, and now the refit begins.

1/2 of the burnt wires we removed.
All the sub-panels and motor controls were pretty much in this state.

Well, now the engine room has been gutted, and engines rebuilt, and the re-wire has begun.

Some of my handiwork,... ;)

Here she is during her hey day, and soon to be given a second chance.

Owner just authorized overtime, to the tune of 45-50 hours a week. :-\

But I need the extra $$$ for the trip to Charlotte. I gotta buy m25 some beer, and I lost the bet for $1. ::)

Wow, that looks like some work to get all that fixed.  Is there work on the interior structure that needs to be done from the fire?

The aluminum framed ceiling in the engine room got so hot on the starboard side, it warped a support cracking the marble floor in the main salon. Everything else is fine. We have isolated the crew quarters and pilothouse with temp power as she's still in the water.

Insurance requires the crew remain on board.

The new owner is more interested in the sushi bar and owners gym,  new art work, and "frills" than those silly wires, and controls.

Our company bid 4400 hours for the estimated work, and should be (keyword should), be ready to commission in Sept, Oct.

How many peanuts?

Who built her?  That's not a Bertram is it?

It is a Trinity Yacht, built in 06, out of Louisiana. It was the first Post-Katrina yacht commissioned out of the yard. It is not quite up to ABS standards.

How many peanuts?

The new owner purchased it from the insurance co for around $4.5 Million, and is putting another $6-7 Million into it.

They painted her brown, for almost $1 Million,  ??? and the interior refit around $2-$3 Mil. The rest is us, the mechanics, and parts, labor.

The Hydraulic Pack that runs the bow thruster, and stabilizers alone was $80,000. These guys throw money around like we throw .22 brass at the range...

The only problem I have is the FRENCH CAPT.  >:(

WOW!
That scene of the electrical panels and MCC is not totally unfamiliar (albeit, mine wasn't on a boat). We had a huge Motor Control Center (controlled 16 different motors) go up in flames when a 6000vac Georgia Power Load Center overload failed and went BANG, causing a fire in our paint department. Nothing like the smell of burnt electronics in the morning.

A little job security..... ;)   ;D

Good luck on the repair job!....and post some after pics.

Russian Mafiya, New rich, or Putin Crony ?  ;D

Absolute Putin Crony. they are like the Arab Shieks, ,...it is insulting to discuss dollar amounts with the owner, (he has subordinates for that),...I don't pay,... I have people for that type arrangement...

If he is shown something he likes, literally cost is NOT an option, it is simply an irrelevant cost to get what he wants. The gym is more important than the engines,...etc,....

Just fix it, and let me know when I can go on a boat ride,...

WOW TW.  I've got a 1989 Sleek Craft that could use a little work if your interested.

If I ever get a little time off and extra cash I'd love to come and here some war stories.  I love being on the water. (even though I can't swim a lick)

How many peanuts does it take to buy a $24 million boat?

26,421 Tons.

The Peanut prices for April 14th.  I used the price of Virginia Peanuts  TW stated 4.5mil for the boat 6-7mil for the repairs.  I used 11.5 million as the price.

11,500,000 / 435.26 = 26420.989753250930478334788402334

Weekly Market Price of Peanuts
April 14, 2010
      * $431.40 per ton for Runner peanuts
      * $427.11 per ton for Spanish peanuts
      * $435.26 per ton for Valencia peanuts
      * $435.26 per ton for Virginia peanuts

If someone else can find out how many peanuts are in a tone, we will have our number.

 :D :D :D :D

TW, we should all just give thanks there's work for yacht ethnics these days.  Even if a Ruskie is paying for it, it's American dollars employing American boat workers--and there hasn't been a whole lot of that going on.  And it's a good thing you can collect some overtime to boot.  None of the boats I ever worked on had that much room to actually work.  Most required human contortions that I can no longer accomplish.  She does look to be a beauty, though.

Average size peanuts are 50 to an ounce and that comes out to 1.6 million peanuts/ton which equals 42,273,600,000 peanuts total

Uh,...Just wear that "Southern Bell Dress" keep that pistol in your garter, (gotta watch those Russians), you can always just slap the French Capt. than he'll surrender the vessel, and under maritime law,,,, it will be ours!!!  ;D

Well, there is some of that, and I am finding it harder to bend and contort myself as well.

The removable deckplates in the engine room hide a bunch of pumps, valves, and level indicators all monitored by "Simon" an automated, interactive, talking computer system, that is also part of our refit.

Remember Hal in 2001 Space Odyssey? Just like that. "We have a problem with J-8 Valve Dave",...kinda creepy.... :o

But it's work, and I'm thankful for it.

What is the power plant like in something like this?

What is the power plant like in something like this?

Two CAT engines at 2760HP each. Two 105 KVA Kohler Generators. Seamless transfer, load shedding, so you never notice going from Generator to Shorepower, (resetting clocks, and TV's is a hassle.) :P  200amp 380VAC/208VAC, with an 100KVA Atlas Transformers (2). Each weighs around 1400 pounds.

Transatlantic capability at 15 knots, Dive Compressors,2 Hot Tubs, Commercial Grade Galley, Crews Qtrs, with their own galley. Two Satellite TV systems, 1 for Europe, 1 for the rest of the world, 2 Watermakers, 17' Tender in the aft "garage", 3 Davits (cranes for the 6-pack of jet-skis). Sky Lounge, one hell of a Nav computer, Sat Phones, terabyte video library, wi-fi, of course bidet's, and all the bells and whistles.  Adding a sushi bar and owners gym.

It costs $38,500-$50,000 to fill with fuel. :o

and of course Simon, which also monitors watertight doors, the alarm system for all entry doors, and video monitoring, and can get grouchy at times.  ::)

You DO know where Simon "Kill" switch is I hope.  ;D

ABSOLUTELY!!!!! Take him out faster than a head shot with a 50BMG! ;) Even his "back up" power supply....
