That was my take as well. I thought it would be more focused on shooting, not sticking them in a house watching them stick it to each other. All it needs is Kate Gosslin. But that woman is such a train wreck it wouldn't be wise putting her in reach of firearms. Bill T.

"Survivor with guns!"
Maybe that's why that guy hosted. He was runner up on the Australia Survivor show years ago. ;)
I opted to sleep after Ice Road Truckers...

If you just had a round robin contest with everyone’s specialty being highlighted it would have been better viewing IMHO.
PS Thanks for correcting the spelling, never was my strong point. ;D

I wonder if they're gonna include Jarts (lawn darts), mumbly peg and spit balls....
;D
-
It was bad, but not as bad as the Showtime show........
-
I did like the exploding targets!
-
How many shots did the 'expert' take from the A3 at 100 yards and miss them all? Heck, luck alone should have put ONE in there!
:D

:D
Heck, I'm an average shot with a rifle and I was able to put 3 on an 8" plate with an A3 from 100 after not pressing a rifle trigger in twenty years!
Nice rifle.....
How good are these folks supposed to be?
-
K.C. Eusebio is no slacker with a pistol!

;D
I only mumble when drunk and pissed off (and I don't drink like that any more)....... ;D
As to the show, after episode 1............slightly boring......not what I expected (IMHO).
It'll end up as a bunch of drama queens with weapons (with all due respect to each person and their respective skills per their discipline).
That being said, I'll give it a few more episodes before I make my final call.
-
I don't know this for sure, but the style of the show and the photography/editing lead me to believe that it was put together by the same people that created Top Chef. Which was my take on it...Top Chef with a little Survivor thrown in at the end.
Can't wait to see J.J. Racaza shoot a pistol that's not a race gun. Next week...
-
I think that "Survivor with guns!" should be 16 people armed to the teeth and the target would be that annoying little dweeb, Jeff Probst! Sorry Jeff, no immunity idol in my game!!!!
Kinda like "Lord of the flies" with a slightly more enjoyable twist!
;D
The History Channel needs to air this program before my beddy-bye time!

Personally it was ok, I was surprised that Seeklander got eliminated 1st, it however did not surprise me that the Olympian won, he kept looking and accounting for the conditions, ( something I have mentioned here many times, if you want to shoot past 300 yards. ) and he adjusted for it. All of the equipment was more than capable of the shots taken, but, each shooter had no sighters and without a spotter, your dead in the water as far as zero, even if shot in by the best, different eyes see sights differently, all did better with the scoped rifles. I think in this competition, it should more like the Masters tournament, every competitor should shoot every stage, and then we will see the Top shot. But you have to be careful, like the Triathlon, cyclists and swimmers have an edge, once they get into their specialty, they haul a**, so single elimination I don't go for, too many variables, 1 bad stage and goodbye. JJ is a world champion, but is used to very finely tuned pistols and shooting the same stages over and over, as far as the steel challenge go's. He is also an IPSC champion. Once they get to pistols, he will probably shine, but not like he will with his own equipment. If it has to be an elimination match, I like double elimination, every stage the winner get paired off against another winner, and losers pair off with other losers, in that way, Seeklander would not have gone home, but the best he could do is 3rd when all is said and done, as 1st would have never lost and 2nd would have only lost once, to the winner.
Gunsite put on an invitational, and they provided all the pistols, I don't recall any rifle, and had some of the very best, Dave Sevigny, Jerry Miculek, Randi Rogers, a best athlete from the air force and many more, but the pistols were brand new in the box, and nobody shot to their norm, but they all shot every stage and had an overall winner that was earned. Shooting Gallery covered it if you have it on DVD or DVR. That is a fair way to do business.
Sorry Mike, you were not robbed, but I think you would have done better, if you were allowed to shoot all the stages, Erik if you read this, give Mike my condolences.
-
Yeah....from the go, those proficient with a rifle would have the advantage since it is the first stage. Have a bad day or not be an expert rifleman and you face elimination.
I thought Mike did good. Took the blame, might have thought it was not the best way to find the true best over all, but gave no hint he thought it was unfair. Reminded me of Patton's reaction to his scoring in his Olympic Pentathlon event.
I noticed his pistol shot in picking who he thought should be eliminated was a bullseye...tried to watch the other pistol shots and I didn't see anyone as close as him.
I'd bet that if he could have shot his own name he would have. He picked the only other person involved in his event, his spotter.
An honorable man and, no doubt, a skilled professional shooter
-
Solus, I'm not sure we watched the same show! The guy who hit the bull when picking was the black guy (spotter), it was dead center. Mike was the third shot on the kid, he did not pick his spotter.

Ohhh...I thought Mike shot first......ooops...
Well, was doing other stuff at the time...the show is not a 'grabber' for sure with the picking...
Well, it will be nice to see how shooters react to all the drama....
-
m25,
I will pass them along. Mike has received a wonderful amount of support from the shooting community, but there have also been some asshats and keyboard commando's talking smack about him.
Some things to consider. It's quite apparent that the show is about entertainment and not who's really the best shot. I know 5 of the guys on the show and I also know about another 10 who didn't make the final cut, and all of them seem to have more across the board skill than the ones selected by the producers. I suspect part is the selection process is about creating drama with conflicting personalities. No surprise there.
Among the many things working against Mike was halfway through his shooting he noticed the rear sight blade was loose and was moving around for every shot. Mike actually stopped shooting and tightened the screw with his thumb to keep it from moving and tried to keep shooting. Of course that was edited out, and don't get me started on the "elimination" challenge. The kid had only one skill..long range shooting. Coincidentally, that was the final challenge after the selection process. Any other shooting challenge and the kid would have had a very difficult time keeping up with Mike. Not throwing conspiracy theories, but a coincidence nonetheless.
Mike set a standard for responsibility and character that we should all strive to attain. I'm proud and honored to call him my friend.

I agree totally about Mike. Good guy all around. But wasn't the reason some of the guys shot at Kelly's target was to assure he would get Mike eliminated? I think one of the guys said that after shooting Kelly's target. He wanted Mike gone, and thought Kelly, because of his rifle skills, was the guy to get it done. I think they knew in advance the "elimination round" was going to consist of long range rifle shooting.
But here is where it conflicts. Kelly said as he approached the shooting position for practice in the "elimination round", he was glad to see it involved shooting modern weapons, and not a W.W. I rifle, as if he were surprised. He also said later, while he was eating cookies and milk in the house the night before, he didn't understand why the guys shot at his target. He said something to the effect, "What did I do that had a negative impact on the team". The guy who shot Kelly's target did so because he thought Kelly had the best chance to eliminate him, (Mike)? Did they all know in advance of what the "elimination round" would consist of, or not? It's a bit conflicting based on their dialog and timeline. Bill T.
-
Mike also said that IF he went to elimination he wanted to shoot against the kid as he considered the kid the best shot there.
-
Mike also said that IF he went to elimination he wanted to shoot against the kid as he considered the kid the best shot there.
No matter how you cut it, Mike is a Class Act.
I don't really think he had a chance to demonstrate his shooting ability, but he came out on top demonstrating his character.
-
billt,
No, I don't believe they knew the elimination test. One of the other teammates was talking about how the only thing the kid brought to the team was long range skills and nothing else. He thought the kids lack of maturity and rifle only skills was a weakness and for the sake of the team they should work to get the kid off the team.
I think Mike went after the kid because he wanted to shoot against the best, regardless of their specific shooting discipline. The kid was a long range shooting champion. I think other than Mike, he was the most accomplished competition shooter on the team. I remember Mike telling other team members to pick the kid so Mike could go against him.
It was definitely a gamble. If Mike had won, no one on the team would want to challenge him for the rest of the show and he would be the red team leader. He would almost be assured to go very deep into the competition, even when his team lost the challenge because no one would want to go up against him. They would look for an easier elimination challenge. It was a good strategy if it worked, but it was definitely a gamble...and it ended up costing him.

Episode 2 thoughts:
OK, so I've been shooting a Beretta 92fs for a couple of years now. The first time I shot a Glock was just a couple of weeks ago. From the first round I was able to hit what I was aiming at. I didn't have to "dial it in" using my first 20 or 30 rounds. I'm no professional shooter, in fact I'm lucky if I can get to the range once a month, but it seems to me that the fundamentals don't change from pistol to pistol. You'd think a competition shooter would be able to pick up any pistol any shoot it well from round one. Or is it that some of these guys get so completely invested in one particular weapon that they can't transition easily to another? If that is the case, and it was me, I certainly wouldn't be blaming the pistol for MY performance. I think one should strive to be proficient at shooting any pistol, not this one particular pistol. Am I wrong?
-
That is one of the drawbacks of being a Glock shooter. The grip angle is different than every other gun out there. So shooting any other weapon is very different.
Also, being a gamer, he emphasized speed over accuracy. Good shooting to him is an 8" group. Didn't help him in the team challenge, but did in the elimination challange.
-
We gave the second episode a "shot" (sorry, couldn't help it) mostly because it was pistols and that's our thing. Still disappointed...they might as well be wanna-be diva chefs trying to make a muskrat souffle. Not about good shooting as far as I can see.
The ONLY saving grace I noticed was when the "expert" in the particular weapon works with the shooters, there are some interesting tips there, but it's not covered completely because that's not the point of the show. I was also disappointed that everyone shot nothing but the Beretta...probably a sponsorship thing. They could have thrown in a revolver, a 1911 and some tupperware just to make it cool.
We find the show has too much drama and not enough guns or shooting. BUT... at least there's a show about shooting on the History channel. We've got THAT going for us.
-
I watched it last night, I'll probably pass on the rest of it.
-
I saw part of last weeks, and last night I watched the new one ... Last time!
The shooting parts did not make up for the stupidity!
You know it is all about hype when they use explosive targets and sheets of glass in the elimination rounds. I liked the tubes with the handgun, and I could have sworn we were watching the real eric whine about not getting to use a glock, but if it is about marksmanship we should see some real scoring at some point.
Now I know that I have an hour every week for something else.
-
The only issue with not watching it is that, if the show is seen as failure, it could be seen as "shooting" programs don't work on non-outdoors related cable channels.

I don't disagree with that statement but, it's really not a shooting show. It's a dramatic competition where shooting happens to be the vehicle to an end. As with other "reality" shows, it's not necessarily going to be the best shot that wins but rather the one person with the most wits or who can manipulate the other players.
I don't recognize any of these shooters from anything I've seen. The woman looks familiar but I don't know from where!

That is why I put "shooting" in the quotes. I'm not in the TV biz but I know executives and they short-hand and compartmentalize so the details don't always matter. Will a TV executive think of it as a shooting show or will they see it as "a dramatic competition where shooting happens to be the vehicle to an end?"
I'll probably keep watching if I don't have anything else better happening on a Sunday night.
-
I think we need to voice our opinions to the execs that make these calls. Let them know that we are interested in shooting, marksmanship, competition, etc., but that these "reality" shows do not entertain us, and that they also paint a poor picture of shooting sports.
Why can't the history channel do a series on each of the shooting sports like they do so many other sports and activities? Why can't the Biography channel do a series of shows on professional and exhibition shooters?
Maybe the problem is that I am not telling them what I want. There is also the issue that not everyone is willing or able to spend the extra money I do to get the Outdoor Channel, so there is a huge market for these programs.

I think that had a lot to do with why the young kid (who is primarily a long-range shooter) still did OK with the pistol. The other guy seems to be mentally 'limiting' himself via equipment issues.
Sight alignment and trigger control are fundamentals that don't change from gun to gun. The style of gun may change drastically, but for all intents and purposes, fundamentals are the same.
I've known a few (very few) people in my life that I would consider 'true marksmen'.......they could shoot very well with any gun at any given time.

I have shot these type of matches, and Yes BAC and Peg, the fundamentals don't change, as to long range rifle, the conditions do, and I think that is what the young shooter did better than Seeklander, but on to the pistol, I cannot speak for the competitors, but when I shot these types of matches, or just something I'm not familiar with, " When all else fails, relax, focus on the front sight and press the trigger straight back into your hand, while maintaining your sight picture " sounds easy and it is, most of us beat our selves, going to fast, snatch and grabbing the trigger, fighting pressure, rather than accepting it. All high level games are 90% mental, once you have the fundamentals. The elimination round was tough, done something similar, but not from a chair lift, I would love to try that. I do not like the voting BS, it will come to voting someone off someone who is better than the rest, although, I think shooters, will not bend to the low levels of the Survivor type shows, at least I hope.

First, I really despise "reality" shows.....they're not. On the other hand, I can watch the fundamental parts of this one hour show in about 10 minutes with my DVR.
Am I the only one bothered by the zip line arrangement? Why were their knees so high up? How many times did they "sweep" the muzzle across their knees? Why wasn't the chair arranged in a more vertical as opposed to a recumbent configuration so that their legs wouldn't be at risk?
And why did they drag them back up the hill in the chair? Why not release them at the base, make the gun safe, then have the armorer recover the gun and make the range safe for the reset? The empty chair could have been raised by hand. Less chance of an accident and quicker reset of the range.
I don't remember the total available targets, but knowing that 5 was the magic number for the second round, I think I would have concentrated all on one side after the first two at the top and been happy with 6.

Am I the only one bothered by the zip line arrangement? Nope! Did you also note all the 180 breaks? Why were their knees so high up? How many times did they "sweep" the muzzle across their knees? I was hoping it wasn't really happening the way I thought I was seeing it. Why wasn't the chair arranged in a more vertical as opposed to a recumbent configuration so that their legs wouldn't be at risk?

The empty chair could have been raised by hand. Less chance of an accident and quicker reset of the range. I attribute this to the range being under the control of a producer hyping the excitement and a director looking for the perfect shot angles ... camera not gun. I'm sure they had everyone there except a qualified range officer.

I got sucked in again tonight :'( My addiction to anything shooting got me to stop in mid surf, and I keep watching.
The one on right now is the long bow, and JJ won it for his team. I liked his attitude, and I think he would be a good instructor based on what they showed us. He has never shot a long bow before, he paid attention to the instructor and others, and he turns out to appear to be the best there.
However, the constant bickering, whining crap for ten minutes of shooting >:( Just like a train wreck - I don't want to see it, but I can't look away.
I go back to my earlier post - we need to let anybody that will listen know that we want a real shooting show and not a soap opera dressed in shooting clothes!
P.S.
Congrats JJ on your great shot, and thanks for your attitude.
-
not to self don't look at this thread until I see the show due to the spoilers (http://gallery.mac.com/philw/100192/kma/web.gif?ver=12747846200001)

I agree. Way too much personal crap. I can't believe that "Brad" is some type of pro category shooter the way he whines about the guns, (Beretta not as "good" as a Glock), and all the rest. Another thing I didn't get was why the guy, (I forgot his name), got so pi$$ed off at Kelly for making some kind of comment about his ex wife. He's a young kid. Young kids say dumb things. He then apologised for it and the guy still was on the warpath with him over it. Regardless, they could have left that whole bit of nonsense out of it. Too much "reality train wreck", and no where near enough shooting. They spend way too much time with the whole "shooting at the name" of the guy you want to send to the elimination round. Put the guys name in a hat, tally the votes, and get on with it. It needs to focus far more on competitive shooting. As it stands now they could run it during the daytime soap opera schedule. Bill T.

I caught a couple of episodes last night while waiting for the fireworks to get started (I can see a couple of pretty good displays from my back deck). What a waste of time. Way too much "Survivor" with guns. I really find "reality" shows to be distasteful, manipulative, and an insult to my intelligence. Not anything like my reality.
"I reject your reality and substitute my own."

If they REALLY wanted a show that showed what shooters are all about, they should grab 6 -12 of US ! ;D
No BS, just shooting challenges and some friendly razzing. ;D

Caught a couple of episodes last night. Hate the drama on the teams but loved the challenge exercise with the static line. :) That would be a load of fun.
As for the few for the show, if it were to be chosen off here, I would nominate Tombogan, Hazcat and FQ13. Some of the stuff you all have been written on here would be perfect for a sitcom!!! ;D
-
Ping - You need to go back a couple pages and read about the safety issues with the shooting on the zip line >:(
As far as Tom, Haz and FQ ... All it would be is witnessed and recorded assault and maybe worse ;D Those three in one room ... two words - bloodshed ... err ... make that rope burn ;D

Thank you, Lord for DVRs. I can watch an episode in 10 minutes. Skip all the drama----get to the shooting. Caught up on the archery and the AR-15 stress test last night.
Cool challenge with the ARs. Memorize the positions. And congrats to the guy that lost the shoot off in the end. For someone who admitted to zero proficiency with a handguns he did very well. I only wish one time they would have given the audience a full 30seconds to see if we could memorize the plate positions.
My technique would have been to number each row left to right. So 4, 1 & 6, 2, 1&3, 5 would have meant, starting with the top row, shoot the 4ths square, come down a row and shoot 1 & 6, down a row and shoot 2....etc.
They could have made it harder by not even outlining the squares when they covered them. I would have done it with a rolled up drop cloth instead of rigid panels.

I agree, if they insist on making a reality show that involves shooting though I think they should do a show that follows Jesse Abbate 24/7. That's some "shooting" reality programming I could get into.

the line that got me was I am "a Grand master" shooter
who cares I know I don't
you need to be the Top shot with everything they give you not just your Mouth
that bloke really annoys me

agree kids do that get over it. it was not worth his attitude and to loose any sleep over crap like that

it is what the lowest common denominator ie reality TV Game shows fan's like and it is the same in shows like Surviver, Master Chef, or anything else like that
that sort of BS gets ratings

however it is a show that gets the shooting on to TV and the more of that the better
also I think "we" are expecting too much out of a reality show as that is what it is more than a Comp Shooting show as part of the entertainment show
however in saying that I would love to see DRTV do a shooters comp shooting show for Shooters with a little of the BS and trash talking between the shooters and more comp shooting I think with MB and MH's back ground in competition shooting and TV production they would be able to put together a real good knock out style show

+1- Great idea. I'd love to see people like us getting the chance to shoot for prizes, etc. They could travel around to different facilites...go to our local funspots, the whole deal. More shooting, less, MTV and Survivor style crap.

I'm gonna try some of the ones they did on the trick shooting episode!

I think we should all buy a bunch of Shoot-N-C and Exploding Targets, rent a big house, live together and fight for a week. M.B. can bring the food and the beer! Bill T.

They are searching for contestants for next season's Top Shot. What do we need to do to get Jessie Abbate (sigh) on the show? ;D

Wouldn't be fair. Who would try to eliminate her? And the producers wouldn't want to let them eliminate her and risk the ratings drop.

Yes, but it'd make for some nice television watching. :)

Today is Jessie's birthday, by the way.
