Just finished reading this article.

Interesting. I always thought these were realistic externally, but had no idea that the internals were that accurate. Maybe it was first done to keep tooling costs down and the ability to reverse engineer the parts, thus less development costs. You would think that the manufacturers would take necessary steps, just for liability purposes. But then again, most are made outside the US.

We can still freeze our paintballs Fullauto. ;D
FQ13 who actually did that to kill some rats in the basement when I lived in DC. Crank up the velocity, ice ball, one dead rat. Works like a charm.

Theres NO WAY it can be done. The magwell dimentions wont match, the recivers on most high end Automatic Electric Guns " A.E.G " or Gas Blowback Rifles " GBR's " are made with cheap metals. Some of the points from one of Ohio's airsoft shops are as follows
1) The original seizure was not because the lowers were in violation of NFA rules, but for their auto sears.
2) There are going to be similarities between real guns and airsoft, because they're designed to look like real guns. (common sense)
3) Those similarities don't mean that if you buy and airsoft gun, you're going to be able to use it on a real steel gun. (more common sense with some trial and error thrown in)
4) I can guarantee that if you put a WE lower onto a real upper, it will not fire a bullet. (personal knowledge of the differences between the WE lowers and my real steel lower)
5) Said upper MAY... MAY be able to be modified to shoot a real bullet for limited use before failure, but not without extreme effort to do so. (you can probably make any object fire a bullet if you try hard enough and have the equipment and knowledge to do so)
6) One guy comes out and says it IS possible, and suddenly it's the gospel of the media world. (why? Because it's a sensational story.)
7) There is a difference between fact and fiction.

And with some basic garage tools and basic hardware items I can build single shot handguns and rifles. There is no end to what an educated public can do with anything.
-
They did bust a guy in England for doing that. Those airsofts were specifically made to be REAL where it counted, and brought right through customs--no cover of darkness necessary.
Can't be done with just any airsoft.

any one can build a single shot shotgun with basicly what ammounts to some gas pipe, a drill and some drill bits.
Hell you can build a black powder gun that will fire safely( once and only once) using thick walled PVC pipe.

I saw Captain Kirk do that with charcoal, saltpeter, sulfur, rocks, a hollow log and some hemp.
The prequel to that scene:
;D
As to the OP, I find it kinda odd that the serial number is on an AR lower. However, I am grateful as it makes the AR platform much more flexible.

I fairly certain you could make a mac 10 or similar smg out of car door and it's parts, a hammer, and some JB weld.

I think it was mostly hemp. Lots and lots of hemp. ;D

You think maybe this is a smokescreen issue - a crisis if you will - for the BATFE to decide that every damn piece of a firearm needs a s/n - you know, for the children?

like it or not, the current definition of a firearm could use some work.

Imitation Firearms
http://www.sapolice.sa.gov.au/sapol/services/firearms_weapons/imitation_firearms.jsp
REGULATED IMITATION FIREARMS
On 1 October 2009 the Government introduced changes to Firearms Regulations 2008, which brought 'imitation firearms' within the firearms regulatory scheme. In effect, these changes made imitation firearms a firearm of the class they imitate for purposes of the Firearms Act.
The changes were made because of an increase in the sophistication of imitations to a point where little modification may be required to bring them to a fully functioning live-firing state and an increase in the use of imitation firearms in criminal activity.
In response to this trend, SAPOL spent approximately 18 months developing the Regulations introduced on 1 October 2009. International and interstate policies were examined and considered before the Regulations were settled on.
However, the Regulations were disallowed by the Legislative Council on 2 December 2009. New Regulations have been drafted coming into effect on 17 December 2009.
Under the new Regulations, imitation firearms which imitate the 'loading' and 'firing' mechanisms of real firearms, or which imitate the receiver of a real firearm (all of which are already defined in the Firearms Act) will be captured by the Regulations. These items will be referred to as 'Regulated Imitation Firearms'.
This was the intent of the original Regulations and does not expand or reduce the types of items from those captured under the disallowed Regulations. Children's toys and novelty items were not captured by the disallowed Regulations.
These replacement regulations will make it easier to assess and make decisions regarding imitation firearms.
Persons who wish to possess regulated imitation firearms are required to demonstrate a genuine reason for possession of the regulated imitation firearm, obtain an appropriately endorsed firearms licence, register the regulated imitation firearm, and meet the required storage and probity standards.
For further information, contact SAPOL Firearms Branch, telephone 8204 2495.

I will point out that I have yet to see this actually done.....
I would bet dollars to doughnuts that if it were really possible, all the cable news stations would be doing one on the air for shock value and dramatic effect. But, I have yet to see it...... just the regirgitation of the original story that claims it can be done.

It makes good grist for the anti's mill, and a "shocking" story on a slow news night. But would YOU want to test fire one Live at 5? A reporter have to want to be the next Geraldo Rivera and risk having the tragic end of her career played on a constant loop on youtube. I think you'll get few takers. ;D

I would just have the gunsmith do it - besides most journalists would probably have an AD with a factory gun.
*Open with "This is a toy gun available at any sporting goods store. Watch as it can be modified in 60 seconds into an assault rifle that can fire real bullets from this high capacity clip."
**Cut to gunsmith shouldering the rifle and shooting live rounds.
It fits the hysterical drive-by media to a T.
