Look folks, we have debated Islam. We have debated our response to Jihad. We have debated Christianity vs Islam, the First Amendment and property rights. What we haven't debated is this. The power of the internet and the sheep like tendency of the media. Think about it. A 50 member yahoo store front church puts up a web page announcing "Burn a Koran Day". Its picked up. Days later, the generals on the front lines, Sec. State, Sec. Def., ambassadors from allied nations, crowds of protestors from countries most Americans couldn't find on a map at gun point, Sarah Palin, Glenn beck, Evangelical ministries, Franklin Graham, Interpol, the President and the Pope are all directly addressing this guy. HE LEADS A STORE FRONT CHURCH WITH FIFTY FREAKING PARISHONERS!!!!!!!!!! WTF??????
How does a clown like this set the international agenda? At this point I don't care a fig about the merits. What I'm asking about is the how. How the hell did this happen? Please click the ABC link to get a sense of seriously folks are taking this.. Apparently, he won't burn Korans if the Ground Zero Mosque isn't built. True or not, its a testament to what a crazy SOB and a computer can do. Again, we've beaten the muslims vs America thing to death. Lets please, for sanity's sake, debate for a bit how this happened. Since when did one idiot get to control the world's news cycle, and how do we make it work for us? What are the future consequences? Etc., etc...... This is a big moment and one that is, in my opinion worth examining by thoughtful folks, such as the ones on this board.
FQ13 who is eager to hear your take

Pretty cool huh ? ;D
-
If they were burining bibles you'd never have heard about it. Any more I think of the news like I used to think of the weather man. It's just a bunch of freakin' noise and conjecture.
-
The muslims say that they don't want their Holy Book burnt (and that the shit will hit the fan if it is).
How about they prevent the burning by handing over a few hundred RPGs to the US Army and Obama makes the call to the loony in Florida and he doesn't burn it?
There! - everybody's happy right?
Next week I'll buy a Kuran - we should have these buggers unarmed within the year!
-
Tolerance ?
FQ, you are flat out stupid to be ranting against this guy.
The SCOTUS has ruled that burning the US flag is OK, protected by the 1st A guarantee of freedom of expression.
(Freedom of expression is NOT in the Constitution, which specifies freedom of speach and press. Freedom of Expression is from the UN Human rights declaration )
But let some asshat even think about burning a koran and every media whore and liberal dipshit in the country has to weigh in on how awful this is.
These people deserve Obummer.
-
Palin and Beck may be dipshits. Hardly liberal though. Its not about tolerance, its about not helping the Taliban recruit.

It's about being a bunch of touchy feely sissies, any one they recruit today we can kill tomorrow.
War is harsh, this nation of metrosexuals needs to face reality.
The only practical answer to radical Islam is to keep killing those camel humpers until they become an endangered species,
kind of like Cartheginians.

I think I'll commemorate 9/11 by throwin' a pig on the barby spit, dip some ammo in the hot drippin' grease, and throw a Koran on the charcoal just to watch the grease drip on it. Maybe I'll shoot a youtube of it and invite them ragheads to come have a go! LMAO!
Got to give that Pastor credit, though. At LEAST he grew a set! (but lost them as soon as he got his 15mins.)

Back to the original point of this thread.......the political power of the internet.
Why do you think the current administration is working on getting a kill switch?
-
That, Mr. Solus, would be the obvious "to keep us right-wing, gun crazy extremist peons under his control!".

Solus, you hit the nail on the head. It's not just 50 parishoners. It's the individual that can stir the pot. That's what socialists and communists fear most: the individual having rights! The Imam has the right to build his mosque (if he has a build permit). The Reverend has the right to burn Qurans (if he has a burn permit, of course). The President speaks for the Imam and against the Reverend. Why? The Reverend is using the internet to multiply the effect of his message. Socialists and communists cannot allow that to happen, hence, net neutrality is required to put big government back in the driver's seat. Makes you wonder what position the ex-President will take on such matters after we vote him out of office, eh?

+10. The guy may be an irresponsible media whore, but you have to love the fact that a nobody can get the attention of the worlds most powerful folks without resorting to violence.

This would have been just another local non-event except some lame-stream media weenie got his/her panties in a wad about it. Media rule # 1 - if it bleeds, it leads. These turds make their bones selling sensationalism, scandal, and controversy and never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
As far as it being a recruiting tool for the Taliban, what isn't? The only difference is now they might have some video (thank to network news) to go with the same story they've been pushing for years. Don't expect a medieval society to be able to grasp a concept like logic.

Um, define violence. Burning a book is not a violent act. Its just a symbolic gesture. When you get down to brass tacks all this guy is doing is making a gesture that shows how he feels about the radical nature of the muslim religion. Do you compare this to terrorist videos of beheadings?

I think you misread FQ's post. He was saying that this minister got world wide attention with a non-violent act. As a matter of fact with no act at all just stating he would burn the book.
Of course there are protests in Afgan about it. One protester killed so far. I'd have to say that the burning is generating pro Islamic action since they weren't protesting anything yesterday.

You are correct! I DID misread it. My apologies. Sorry guys, I don't think I've had any real sleep in about 2 weeks. Starting to catch up to me. :P

Just like the printing presses in Colonial America.

Well the copycats are coming, check Drudge. Pastors in several other states have jumped on the band wagon.
America, as a whole, is just pissed off, for a variety of reasons, pick one. It doesn't take much for the ol' sleeping giant to rear up and say Enough!.
It strikes many "grasseaters", as Col. Jeff Cooper called them by surprise. The "Tree Of Liberty, Being Refreshed", scares the moderates.
"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws...you create a nation of law-breakers and then you cash in on guilt."
Ayn Rand
The Amendments aren't just for the rights you agree with, but even include those you don't.

Westboro? (I refuse to call them baptists or a church) Another handful of people that get WAY more than their 15 minutes due to their shock value and the internet.

Anything those Westboro A holes support I oppose. They are the scum who protest at veterans funerals.
But TW is right, the Amendments are there to protect the things you don't approve of or agree with.

I will attempt to answer the question that stared this post as I see it.” How does a clown like this set the international agenda?” The simple answer is that the controversy suites the agenda of the government controlled media’s agenda to cause unrest in our society. You see the globalists around the world and in charge of our country need civil unrest to assist them in their attempt to transform our beloved nation into a socialist state. That is the reason at every turn they use every opportunity to piss you off. In my humble opinion it is by intention, the more civil unrest they can cause will help push more people over the boiling point. Which will ultimately result in citizen use of force which will give them the perfect opportunity to use force to crack down on everyone, and take more or your freedom. Just like the result of 9/11 resulted in the removal of American freedom instead of the security of our borders. I believe that it is the current goal of our government to intentionally create civil unrest, by both social and financial means to further crack down and remove freedom and our capitalist system. I would urge everyone to be prepared, but not to fall into the trap that they are bated into by the government and the government controlled media.

Every one at ground zero tomorrow, go buy the best pork ribs or pork of any kind, have a picnic and throw it into the hole that used to be the twin towers, it is unclean to build a mosque where the land is soiled by pork, so the spainards say and it worked for them.
Tomorrow, everyone remember. I will save my pork bones.

Simple answer, cheap, instant, worldwide communications.
How many remember "Mail", and "Party line" phones ?

Most will remember mail. It is were all those bills and coupons come from.
Party line phones go back a ways....but I remember them.
I also remember when you made a long distance call, you told the operator the city you were calling and the phone number of the party you were calling and that phone number included 2 letters. For example GR6-1520. Which translated to Grove Hill 61520, where Grove Hill was the neighborhood of the person called. That number, by the way, is the first phone number I learned. It belonged to my grandparents in Chicago and I was 6 at the time.

I'm not that old, we always had 7 numbers. our 1st number was 224-4712 until we moved in 71 ;D

Tom "The Kid" Bogan ;D ;D
When I was 12, which was in '59, we moved and I remember the number started with TW which was for Twin Brook..change was made to all numerals shortly after that.

Much as I hate the ultra-liberal Michael Douglas, your post reminds me of one of his lines in "The American President". To paraphrase (my old thinking thing doesn't remember the exact line), "The First Amendment means nothing unless you're willing to support the right of someone else to shout, at the top of his lungs, something that you would spend the rest of your life shouting against at the top of your lungs."
