I'm considering picking up the Mossberg 930 SPX in anticipation of IDPA 3-gun.
Type: Semi- Automatic
Caliber 1: 12 gauge
Barrel Length: 18.5"
Capacity: 7 + 1
Finish: Black
Sights: Ghost Ring
I was looking at an FNh SLP but I can't pick it up for less than $920. The Mossberg I can get for a tad over $600.
Any input?

Mossberg all the way. I dad has a 930 and its a beast. He put an Aimpint Micro on it and out to about 100yard slugs hit where you aim them.

500, with a F/O bead.
You can't go wrong with a Mossburg

I know you guys like mossies, nobody wins with them, and never will,,, lot of peeps say benelli is the best,, but Remington sitll rocks. 1100 or 1187 good guns, of course the 870 is what every pump is compared against.

Why? Great sight, smooth action, rugged, (I can't speak to the semis, just the pumps), and a superior safety. Whats the downside?

That Mossie has a pistol grip. You will find it does not work well with the tang safety. You have to release your grip to work it. I know that is one of the "Pros" of the Mossie over the 870 but it is more than negated when the Mossie has a pistol grip.
Try one out and you will see what I mean.
I had a 590, Vang Comped with the Knoxx recoil reduction pistol grip stock and the safety was a pain and the slide release was also impossible with that stock. The action was very rough and it never smoothed out before I got rid of it.
Had an 870 equipped the same without the Vang Comp. (interesting discussion on the Vang, if anyone is interested) and it's smoothness spoiled me. Kept the 870.

My advice. Handle both of them before you buy!
Even if there's a $500 differance, you'll consider it well spent every single time you pick it up if the more expensive gun fits you better, is lighter, or better balanced for you.
Don't base where you spend you money on media hype, or what fits other people. Both companies have excellent products, so quality isn't really an issue in the decistion IMO.
I've got a Mossberg, a Benelli, a Remington, and other shotty's sitting in the safe. Even though I believe at least 2 of them are "better guns", I take the Remington more often than not just because the thing fits me like a glove!

The advantage that the FN SLP has is they recover faster. Not a big deal for the average IDPA/USPSA shooter but at the A/Master level its a big difference. The SLP is also a Winchester derivative and can use some of the aftermarket parts for them.
depending on the set up the SLP and 1100 have 8 shot magazines but the Moss and Benellis hold 7.

Less filling, tastes great......
BM summed it up. What works for you and your intended use, fit, and function overrides everything, as Mossberg and Remington and Benelli, and FN, are all very good.
I like my Rem 870, Express Magnum. Always have,,,,,, fired many Mossberg's, no problem with them, just like the Rem.
Good tactical scatter guns simply have to work, whether in comp. or SD. Hope you find the one that suits YOU.
Let us know, Those "Evil Black Shotguns" are pretty bad a$$.... 8)

Indeed, it is about preference. For me, after many years of wingshooting, I'll always be faster on the target with a srtaight stock. I wouldn't look at a P/G. The exception would be a folding/collapsible stock where a P/G is pretty much standard. Beyond an old Browning Squareback, I have zero experience with semis. As a lefty though, I guarantee you I'll get a 590 going faster than an 870. In fact with my current Maverick, its just "cruiser ready", empty chamber, safety off. There is no safety on the gun as far as I'm concerned. An 870 would be the same way, but that's just me.
Meanwhile back on the thread, if anyone has anything to say about the 930 SPX vs the 590, I doubt I'd be alone in wanting to hear it.

PS I'm assuming (hoping) he was using a remote camera, not a cameraman.
Anyway ,here it is.

I know what I want for X-mas. ;D

Thanks for all the input! I still haven't decided because I found out I qualify for a $100 rebate from FN for the SLP. It makes the price difference about $250. Not a ton of cash when owned over 20 or 30 years.

Wise man. I count nickels if its a toy. If I use it every day? I really don't care what it costs (as long as I can foot the bill) as when you divide the costs by the days used? It just doesn't matter.

Looks like a fun zombie slayer to me! ;)
I have no idea, HAVE newer semi-auto's achieved reliability of pumps? When thinking of home defense, or any application against another human reliability wins out over fractions of a second between shots... :-\
-
BM, I was talking to a guy up here who claims Semi Auto's HAVE gotten as reliable as pumps.
Not really surprised, they've had what ? 120 years to get it right . ;D
