Reminds me of a funy story about my late lamented stepdad. On Christmas Eve, the ironing board breaks. There was a party that night and my Mom needed to iron her dress. So he goes to Sears to buy a new one. He said he got the stink eye and hissed at from every woman in the store. He thought about asking to get it gift wrapped, but decided he wanted to leave with his balls intact. ;D

Smart man.

I bought a vacuum cleaner last Spring, Did not understand why I got so many glares until some one mentioned that the next day was Mothers Day. ;D Heck my Mom lives in Fl. I sent the card and stuff a couple weeks earlier and forgot about it ;D
I DID buy the Ex wife a sewing machine for Christmas one year, but that was ONLY because she took me into the store before hand and said I want that one. (I don't know why, she never sewed a damn thing ::) )
-
Hey, I buy my wife that kind of stuff because she needs it (I use it too) and prefer spending the money so she doesn't have to! I also buy good stuff for her and give her $$$$ so she has a little "Mad Money" for "just the right shoes to go with that _____ dress! or whatever".
FWIW
Richard
PS: I even have a little left over for reloading components! LOL
-
My wife is a little different...anyone who knows her will tell you that. Some of her favorite Christmas presents from me:
4" Belt sander
Reciprocating saw
Set of Jewelers Pliers and cutters
Ruger GP 161
Bernina Sewing Machine
Full set of spackling knives
Emerald and diamond ring
Antique brace and bit set
(Gotta go "girlie" once-in-a-while.

If the Diamond brokers and Jewelry Stores really wanted to sell more Diamonds...they would run an ad campaign similiar to the one below with the caption reading.
Diamonds, Now she'll pretty much have to!

I brought my wife a Lawn Mower for a anniversary present once.....
Dog house is a bitch!
-
I was married two years before my wife asked me how to turn on the vacuum cleaner. She should have been in the doghouse.
-
the war dept does like house care stuff. but.... when it comes to sewing etc.. she has no clew, nor wants to know. I bought an antique Singer sewing machine a couple years back and she doesn't want to learn! beautiful machine. didn't buy it for her, but when she spends money to sew what she can do at home I get frustrated.!!!!! I'm the only one in the damn house that knows how to use a sewing machine!!!!! AAAAGAGAGAHAHGAGAHH!!!!!! WTF???
she's already in the doghouse.. for those of you who are questioning..

You and Melanie would get along great! Bill T.

I'm getting my wife something to match what I got her 2 years ago, which was a tennis bracelet white gold, 7.1 k diamonds and saphires. How I wraped it was great, it really impressed the inlaws. I put it as a neckless on a stuff bear, that had a bow wraped around it its neck and attached to the box, so when she pulled it out to show every one, the ribbon came off. ;D
last year I go her car, which some jack ass totaled.
I'm still debating between ear rings and a pendent. Money is really tight this year so we will see how things go.

The only thing a kitchen gadget would do for my wife is to collect dust. she hates to cook, which is ok with me as she is not good at it. I am, and I enjoy it. I have to sour dow culture fermenting right now. I don't know how a book would go over, she has to read so much for work I bet she is sick of it.
-
TAB, did you use a starter Kit or "grow your own" ?
-
I cheated... when I went to SFO to pick up the inlaws, I swung by the warf and got some starter.
-
Feed your starter and take care of it and it'll live longer than you. It probably did already.
-
I know how to take care of a mother, I just have no desire too. I don't bake enough for that to be worth while.
-
My Dad used a starter once, but after that he started his own. This was years ago but as I remember it was pretty easy.
For years we never ate store bought bread in the winter. (To hot to bake in the wood cook stove in the summer.)
-
Its not hard at all, I just have better things to do, and I have to find a good place to keep. which is easy in the winter, but when its 110+ in the summer its hard to find a place cool enough to keep it going.
-
How about in front of the A/C, at 110 you BETTER have A/C ! ;D
Just busting your chops, the time is more a factor I understand.
-
I kept a started going for years.. then finally used it all up.
I still make my bread but just use bread flour and regular stuff.
((thinking I need to start another started))
Oh~~ I almost forgot.. I like massages too. ;D

Last month I spent 10 days in San Mateo. Next time I'll let you know when we'll be there.

With this talk of starter and mother, it brings to mind the friendship bread that makes the rounds. We haven't seen it for quite a while in neighborhood, but how many of you have received this starter?
I always love the bread, but at some point we can't give the starter away or use it fast enough. That is the point we usually end up just using it up and going without until someone gives us some more.
I still remember the starter that got away from us one night: We had a couple zip lock bags on the counter, and one went "blob" on us. I heard a pop in the middle of the night, rolled over and went back to sleep. In the morning one bag was nearly empty, but there was a spray of growing starter all over the counter, floor, stove and refrigerator. The other back looked like the Goodyear blimp, and I got it out and burped just in time :o

Yes, they will "POP" won't they. ;D
My wife is on the third evolution of making some Amish Friendship Bread....which to me is somewhat of a misnomer since it is more like a cake. Very good cinnamon and sugar flavor. One batch leads to half a dozen loaves and four more bags of starter. One good thing is that you can freeze it and then take it out later and take right up where you left off.
Good stuff.

Alright, there has been enough talk here about this that now I am wanting to make some Sourdough starter. This recipe was given to me along with a great story by a lady who use to live across the street from me.
Her daughter in law was diagnosed with inoperable cancer on her brain and admitted to the hospital. Everyday when her husband and other family would come in to visit with her she would tell them to be sure and feed Herman. Now no one knew what she was talking about and they were told by the Doctors at the hospital that she was delusional due to her condition. A few days after she passed away my friend from across the road went to her home to help out and do some cooking and cleaning and in the fridge ran across this gooey mess in a large glass jar with tape on it and the word Herman written across it. On the counter she found a recipe card with this recipe for Herman Sourdough starter and rolls.
Back when I was cooking everyday I would often take my neighbor over a sample of whatever it was that I happened to be experimenting with at the time. Ms. Dorothy shared this recipe with me saying that she knew I would put it to good use.
Sourdough Starter (Herman Rolls and Cakes)
1 Pkg Active Dry Yeast 2 Cups unbleached Flour
2 cups warm water ¼ cup sugar
Dissolve yeast in warm water in a mixing bowl: stir.
Add flour and sugar stirring until well blended. Cover loosely with plastic wrap (I prefer to use cheese cloth.)
Allow mixture to stand overnight in a warm place or between (75-90 degrees F.)
In the morning stir well, the mixture should be very bubbly. Place mixture in a gallon size glass jar cover loosely and refrigerate. On the second day thru the 4 th day fed the mixture. Stir well and feed again on day 5. On days 6-9 stir only. Feed again on day 10. Mixture is now ready to begin using.
Feeding Sourdough Starter.
1 cup milk ½ cup sugar 1 cup flour.
As you use the mixture be sure and replentish it using equal part of either milk or water and flour to keep it going.
“Herman Hot Rolls”
1 cup Sourdough Starter 4 tbls oil
½ cup warm water 2 cups flour
1 pkg dry yeast 1tsp additional flour
Combine ingredients and shape into a roll. Lightly grease pan and allow mixture to rise to nearly double size. *Don’t punch it down* Oil the top lightly and score it lengthwise Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 min.
Amish Friendship Bread
2 cups sourdough mixture ½ Tbs baking soda
2/3 cup oil ½ tsp cinnamon
2 cups flour ½ tsp salt
1 cup sugar 1 tsp baking powder
2 eggs 1 cup nuts or raisins (Optional)
Mix ingredients well with a large wooden spoon: remembering dough will be stiff. Pour into 2 loaf pans that have been lightly oiled and sprinkled with sugar. (I also add a sprinkle of cinnamon as well.)
Bake at 350 degrees F for 45-50 minutes.
Remove, let cool and enjoy.

Hey Rat, the first time my wife made the Amish cinnamon stuff, she messed up and doubled the cinnamon and it turned out to be even better than the batch my mom had made to start with. She also sprinkles extra cinnamon and sugar in the bottom of the pan before baking and then on top after it comes out of the oven.
She also does one where she adds banana pudding mix to it to make banana bread.
Good stuff.
PS: You need to post the recipes in the recipe board.

I will post this in the recipe board as well.

The trouble is, you'd have to get the dog to actually live in it. It took negotiation to get mine to stay on a pad rather than the sofa. Sleep outside with no AC? What do I think she is? A dog? ;D
