Has any one else watched the HBO series "The Pacific" ?
I just watched the first 3 disks, ( 6 episodes ).
It follows 3 Marines, "Manila John" Basilone (MOH on Guadalcanal, Navy Cross KIA Iwo Jima ) Robert Leckie (Author "Helmet for my pillow ) And E.B.Sledge (Author, "With the Old Breed" )
I was surprised, they portrayed Basilone as a nicer guy than some have described him as being, and Leckie comes across as a bit of an asshole.
Otherwise it is awesome, they even show one of th characters carrying a Riesing Submachine gun (it was only issued to Marines and only used on Guadalcanal, it was so prone to jamming that it was taken out of service after that)

Watched it a few months back, was bloody good. How could you not like any production that has a sledge (no relation) involved with it ;D

Fantastic series. I enjoyed it better than "Band of Brothers".
Should be mandatory viewing in American History Classes.

yes, watched it, and have it on my hard drive for watching on the ship. this and the Band of Brothers are watched about every trip. (it gets lonely out there) got some new ones this trip, including beneath hill 60 (Aussie film)

Watched it when it was aired on HBO. Seems that the fighting in the PTO was much more bloodier compartively than in the ETO.

The ETO was a war fought for victory, when a unit was in an impossible position surrender was an option.
The Pacific was a fight for extermination, on one of the islands (Saipan I think ) out of 20,000 + Japanese troops there were 18 survivors.
Going to watch the rest of it today ;D

Hi;
For those of us who do not have HBO, when can we expect it on the History Channel or Spike ? I saw the intro that Reel TV did on it and it looked good.
Keep in mind that Dale Dye is working up a series on Korea and Vietnam according to his web site. These may be in the next 5-7 years if the money is there to produce them.

Parts that stand out....., the effectiveness of the 12g as a CQC platform,( Episode 2). The absolute need for a sidearm. The 1911 was and still is about at the top of the list.
"Whoever said the pen was mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons."--General Douglas MacArthur
"The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war."
General MacArthur

I'll have to keep an eye out, I'll need 2 copies of that one so I can give one to my Dad (USMC D-2-1 52-53, Silver Star, Purple Heart Machine guns )

If you noticed almost all the males in the Melbourne scenes were young boys or old men.
Every one else was in North Africa.

Back then it was for adventure, king and country! Very few had any idea of the horrors of war that lay waiting, even after they came back, some with horrendous injuries, mental issues it was rarely spoken of, and when it was the truth of it all was never made public. Its only because of the advent of film, peoples personal diaries that some things ever make the light of day.
Australia was only a small country (still is some what) and to have so many men lost really hurt.
Some Australian Statistics
First World War 4/8/1914 -- 11/11/1918
416,809 enlisted AIF (includes AFC) -- 13.43 percent of the white male population and probably about half the eligible men.
331,000 enlisted and served overseas
61,720 died (all causes)
155,000 wounded (all services)
4,044 taken POW, 397 died while captive
1914-1918: four million

TW and I were talking about "The Pacific". By then the adventure aspect was long gone, it was just King and Country.
And by the time their country was threatened by Japan the Aussie men were all in North Africa or India.

+1 for The Pacific I saw it a while ago

I'll have to watch that, Caine was under played in the "Inception".
However, the Battle for Okinawa, one of the last episodes, was about as accurate as those that were there described. Atrocities, and as TomB posted, Europe, was fought for Victory, The Pacific was extermination.
My Grandfather only shared his experience's shortly before he died, and until that day, despised the Japanese, and SPAM. No Japanese food, cars, products, for the remainder of his life.
After what he described, watching the bonus interviews, with the Veterans that were there, and watching the series, I can't blame him for the way he felt.

I watched it on HBO, excellent. I thought I had caught them in a mistake. The M! carbines they are carrying do not have bayonet lugs. AHA, I thought. But no, they were right on, bayonet lugs were not included on the carbine then.
-
Only thing I caught was the wrong helmets at Guadalcanal. Heck, I even saw 1 Reising SMG, No Johnson rifles but those went to the ParaMarines anyway.
