First, it looks like it escaped from a French whore house. That aside, for $71,000, it better have been hand made by John Moses Browning and used by Audi Murphy to kill a Nazi. $71,000? I'll merely refer to the Gunny rather than quoting him. ;D

I guess quite a few of these "one of a kind" 100th year Anniversary Editions will be more available for those that consider it a "must have".
My 100 year 1894-1994 Winchester 30/30 "Anniversary" edition was bought at Wal-Mart.
I'd be happy with a similar simple 1911-2011 etching on the slide, and that's it. Certainly, not $71,000.
-
Me thinks I may have to place another bid.
LOL, seeing as how it cost as much as my vine covered cottage by the side of the road, I don't think I will be using it as a carry gun.

That's a $2,500.00 pistol tops. It's not even fully engraved. I don't know who sets the prices for these things, but they really need to sober up a bit. That is insanity. So it was, "displayed at the SHOT show". So are a bunch of models in short skirts. Are they "worth" any more because they were there? Bill T.

I think those models would do a lot more for you than that pistol, and for probably a great deal less than $71,000. ;)

The gun is one part of the bid price, the trip and extras is another, but the following is the largest I'm sure. This is about lovers of our sport and Rights putting up their money to support both. This is something that the fortunate that have built wealth do that the liberals in our nation refuse to see.
All proceeds from the auction of this historic firearm will benefit the programs to further the Hunting Heritage Trust's programs to further America's hunting and shooting sports heritage.
The SHOT Show auction is administered by the Hunting Heritage Trust for the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

I understand that it's for a good cause, and all, but for that much money it comes in a cardboard box? What's up with that?
-
I like them a whole bunch but I do enjoy having a roof over my head also. I would rather have one of the Colt Special Edition 21st Century Commanders by TALO a whole lot less with $68,000 left over for Ammo. ;D

First thought, I wonder if they've gotten C&R approval? ;-)
Secondly guys, come on this also comes with (which totally makes it worth it)
.... visit the Colt Factory in Hartford, Connecticut on March
..... a private tour of the factory
...... lunch with Colt Management
.... a package of special Colt logo items and collectibles
...... photos taken with the Colt engravers
...... visit the Colt Historical Department
...... an official document authenticated his Colt as the one and ONLY 100th Anniversary 1911
...... have his or her initials engraved on spare mainspring housing
....... Hotel and travel included
I do wonder if they'll cover shipping and FFL cost?
-
kilopapa may have to sell 50% of the inventory for that .
-

It comes with a custom built wood and glass display case.
-
I don't know Alf I grew up in Ct
Tour of the Factoy - The original where USFA is located or the New one,, alco CNC machines are not much to look at to see one of them I would go to my friends machine shop.
Lunch with management - Why would I want to ruin a good lunch was never fond of so called management types.
Package of Special Colt Logo Items and Collectables - MADE IN CHINA enough said.
Photo with Engravers - OK But no one knows who they are.
Visit the Historical Dept - Can find most information on line whith out leaving the house
Official document of Authenticity - Seeing as it is the only one whats the point.
Initials engraved in a spare mainspring housing- Why its not like you are going to change it out and I don't neeed an extra one.
Hotel and Travel - I could stay at my sisters in Trumbull and go by car.
In short I am glad someone is willing to pay some astronomical figure for something that benefits a charity or someone in need. If it was me I would just take the Firearm and have them donate the cost of the extras to a charity of my choice.

True, but it comes IN a cardboard box. ;)
-
One of a Kind Colt 2011-1911 = $70,000
Obama on Vacation getting eaten by a Tigershark = Priceless ;)
-
Current bid was $72,025 when I looked.
Seems like a raffle might have been a better way to go. At $1000 a ticket, I bet they would have gotten more than 72 purchased....of course the auction is not over yet.
And with the raffle, some less well financed folks might have had a chance to win.
-
I guess I just break these things down different. Don't get me wrong, I like and respect high grade guns, but $72,000.00 for 1 Colt or about 60 nice AR-15's. For me the choice is obvious. Bill T.

I saw it in a magazine article on the different commemorative's being issued, never thought it would go much over $5k
$72K now Holy samoleans ! :o
It is however, as one of a kind, an instant collectors item for several reasons and the money is going to a good cause.

Exactly what I have been saying. The liberals that want to tax us to death and beyond to fund their precious projects don't understand that the "evil rich" will part with their money very easily for a pet project. Sometimes all it takes is a little carrot, or in this case a $2,000 gun and accessory package that they can put on the mantle and tell the story to their friends who will also take out their checkbooks for projects. Is it ego stroking - YOU BETCHA! But, when was the last time you saw someone who didn't respond to ego stroking, including do gooder gladhanders that like to tax us for the good of others.
-
If I were that rich, I would be glad to bid $73,000. But, alas I do not play in that league -- though I wish I could.
-
I'd bid, but I just got that Kimber. ::) But then again you can never have enough guns ;D. Let's see if I sell the house, maybe just maybe, I can come up with the cash. ;)
-
It is a beautiful pistol, but does the trigger look like plastic? It does to me.
-
Lunch with management - Why would I want to ruin a good lunch was never fond of so called management types.
The standard joke is winner gets lunch with management. Runner-up gets two lunches with management.
-
All you haters..... ::) ;D
I wonder if a 30 year anniversary Glock will go for that amount...... ;)
-
I like 1911s like a fat kid likes cake.......but that is out of control! It has no history to it, never did anything of significance, it is just a $5,000 (maybe) pistol with a lucky serial number on it. Given the choice between that particular pistol and a loaded Wilson Combat 1911 with a brand new Corvette (equipped w/aftermarket plush floormats,) I know what I would choose.
-
I'd rather have a double stack RIA 1911. At $420 MSRP I would actually shoot the RIA.
-
All you haters..... ::) ;D

Given that it will look a lot like the 29th anniversary Glock, and the 28th anniversary block, and the one made ten minutes before? I'm thinking no. ;D

But they could engrave it with a wood burning kit! Bill T.

Maybe I'm just not observant, but where do you put the battery in that personal massage unit?

Here's something I posted regarding the 1911 and it's usage. This was a "back and forth" with someone that doesn't kike the 1911 platform. I was trying to explain why I like it:
If the proper smiley face was available I'd use it.
I could demonstrate, but it would require a drink of Bushmills on ice. It involves a smile and holding the glass in a particular manner, with the fingers positioned just so. I have no desire to debate the issue. While maybe not at the top of the technology heap today, it still functions, and quite well I might add. The 1911, not my bowel system that is. The revolver still functions too. There is no denying that Glock, S&W M&P's, and various new-fangled gadgets work well for most people today. Some of us however would know how to saddle our own horse and ride to town if we had to. It's an older method of transportation than the car, subway, or bicycle much like the 1911 is an older method of handgun.
The 1911 harkens back to a different era, yet still works well today. It's not relegated to the trash heap or the museum display like many older things. Guns, be it the 1911 or the Glock, manage to evolve over time. Sometimes that is for the better, but I often think not. The "complexities" of the 1911 bring with it a set of problems not faced by the more common weapons of today. Today's society is more concerned about appearances than actuality. The "cocked and locked" mode of carry can look "scary" to the unknowing. Sadly today's society is more about appearances than function, IMHO. I think it stands as a testament to John Browning's genius that the 1911 is still in use today. Not as a general issue weapon to the masses, but now to the more trained and professional among us. Look at the F.B.I.'s HRT, or various SF and SWAT Teams around the country. Is the 1911 the best "general issue weapon"? Probably not, as it demands a higher level of commitment from the user, IMHO. However for those willing to make the commitment, and work within it's realm of capabilities, it can still be a very viable choice, much like the revolver.
There is no doubt that the 1911 or BHP will someday be obsolete, but until it is, some of us will rely upon it as a daily carry gun when our butt is in a sling. It comes from an era when things were made to last and for some of us has an artistic appeal that speaks to the soul. Some people have no soul, or appreciate art. The 1911 was revolutionary for it's time. Plastic pistols and kydex holsters are evolutionary from their steel and leather counterparts. From an economical standpoint the 1911 is a poor bargain. In fact I will admit that it's not a bargain at all. One can buy two plastic guns for the cost of one 1911. Much like one can buy four newer pieces of "modern art" for the cost of one older work of art, like a C.M. Russell. It's up to the buyer to decide.
Is my reply and fondness for the older design based upon emotion? Partly yes, but partly no. I have found no other platform that lets me shoot as well for so few bullets sent downrange. The 1911 was ergonomic before their was even such a word. The caliber is sufficient as a fightstopper, and in fact favored by many in various other platforms. Look at how many newer pistol designs are chambered for the traditional 1911 caliber. Look at how many 'newer" handguns try to emulate the grip angle and ergonomics of the 1911. That to me stands as a tribute to it's creator, and how much ahead of his time he was. I think genius is the word.

wow that is a nice gun
however I don't think it is 82K + that nice a gun

I checked and you have to pay $50 in shipping.
I'm wondering which states it might be illegal to possess this gun? California? Maryland?
Plus of course, depending on your state, you may also have to fork over sales tax. I wonder if I could convince them to treat it as a $1,000 sale and an $81,000 donation? I mean, I"ve already mortgaged the house and both cars at this point.

Won't be legal in Massachusetts. Only the PARA and S&W 1911 (some, not all) are approved in MA as well as the Rock Island and an Auto Ord model......
-
They'll take a personal check, right?
RIGHT?!?!
;D

Maybe the best thing would be for a MA resident to have the winning bid. They can write their check, and donate the gun back so bidders 2,3 and 4 can have another opportunity to play the game as they donate. The wealthy love playing these games with their friends! Everyone should attend a fund raising auction to watch the fun some of these people get out of playing this game. It is like watching us throw $10's and $20's at pulltabs, but with way more zeros.
It will be interesting to hear who wins. It is even money that it is a foundation or group of people pooling funds to give to the organization.
-

That's a big "negatory" there Cookie. A resident of one state, can't take possession of a handgun in another state (some limited exceptions, I think, which don't apply here). Must be shipped to an FFL in your state of residence.
Still out the $50, plus the charge by your FFL.
Of course, to get your FULL VALUE out of the deal you'll need to take several days off for the photo-op and the luncheon, where you can droll over it.

Ya, didn't think about that, just so excited about a new pistol ;D. Guess I'll save those days off.

82k is unbelievable, BikerRN, welcome to our forum and well said, I wonder what JMB would have done with polymer if it had been available?

Bet it would. Not to get all Randian here, but JMB was definately a "form follows function" kind of guy. The Squareback? The M2? The BAR? Even (for the time) the 1911 or Hi-power? None of them won any beauty contests. They just worked. People thought they were pretty only after they were impressed by the performance. I honestly belive that JMB and Gaston Glock would have gotten along like a house on fire, and designed a pretty cool gun on a cocktail napkin over a beer or 8. ;D

Now let's go down the yellow brick road, an M2, Bar, 1911 ( which has already been done, double stack ) or high power in polymer, I have held a Bar, damn, very heavy and not balanced, off a bipod ok, but off the shoulder, sorrry, your a better man than I am Gunga din. M2's even in polymer, your not going to pull a predator, Jesse Ventura hip shot, no sir, drop it from 250lbs to 150, still going to take a very strong man. JMB did develope a FA lever action with string, pretty cool, look it up.
-
M 25, You are way off on the weight of the M-2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M2_Browning_machine_gun
Weight 38 kg (83.78 lb)
58 kg (127.87 lb) with tripod and T&E
Even the water cooled .30 was not that heavy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1917_Browning_machine_gun
Weight 103 lb (47 kg) (gun, tripod, water, and ammunition)
Maxim designs , with their "toggle" action were a bit heavier but still under 150 pounds.
-
The bidding seems to have stalled. It's currently at $82,575.

I was tempted to put in a bid figuring I'd be out bid quickly and then be able to say I bid on a 82K pistol.....but chickened out...
Wondering if the last bidder did the same thing and is now gonna sweat bullets for two weeks.

How much do I like the 1911? It's the gun I bet my life on every day.
How much do I like THAT 1911? Not that much.
Apparently Larry Potterfield likes the 1911, too, based upon his concealed carry test Wednesday night.
