VMI used to have a mathematics teacher called "Tom Fool" who also taught artillery.
You probably heard of him by his other, later nickname, Stonewall .
VMI is supposed to be a good school that has turned out more Famous Generals than any other except West Point.

I had a room mate that graduated from VMI. He could barely spell his own name....thank goodness his wife was brilliant!
Guy could party though!

Unless he's planning on going career, I'd really suggest ROTC at a regular school (assuming this is a scholarship issue). I mean why subject yourself to all the hazing when you get the same commission, and the Academy guys are going to look down on you anyway? I mean hell, sleep in, wear reular clothes, have a girfriend, drink beer and you're still 2nd Lt. WTR jr. Of course at VMI you do get to yell "Remember the Ten!" at an annoyingly high volume at any inter mural ROTC competion. ::) To which the Response (at least from the mighty Hoya battalion) was "Its a good start!". ;D

I wouldn't even recommend kids go the Service Academy route now. And I am a USAFA grad. They are all so watered down and pussified.
Jeesh...
Sad..... :(
Go to a civilian school that has a good male to female ratio. Tell your kids to study something worthwhile and not in the humanities, some sort of engineering or hard science. And network, network, network while they are there. It's all about who you know or who you are related to in the real world.

Not hard, just unecessary. If you want an academy exprience fine. But you'll get a better general education, a better social life and the same commision doing ROTC at a regular college. If he's set on Virginia, try Va. Tech for instance (the board will throw in a number 7 jersey) ;D.

PS, as far as Texas A@M, UT has ROTC too. Our graduates know how to read, write, and avoid molesting the livestock. ;)

But FQ, I don't think he want's his kid to become a "faux Libertarian". Your suggestions are the best support his sons arguments can get.

Hey, at least I got to have girlfriends sleep over in the dorms, got to drink beer, and seriously, got a better education than a lot of the strictly private military academies. ;) The bottom line is that a reserve commission is a reserve commision and a lot of great schools (including all the land grant colleges) have ROTC programs. I get places like the Citadel and VMI for career types as they have their own "old boys" networks in the armed services. But if you just want to serve and get a scholarship at a good school, I'd sure reccomend Va. Tech over VMI, or Georgetown over the Citadel (though Charleston is nice). West Point or Annapolis are obviously in a whole different league.
