Title: Taurus 1911?
Post by: tommy tornado on March 04, 2008, 08:50:40 PM
I am seriously considering buying a Taurus 1911.  One thing that I am curious about is the ability of the gun to accept aftermarket parts?  Are the slides and frames of the Taurus 1911 pretty much standardized like the Springfield or Kimber in terms of accepting new bushings, springs, hammer, etc.  For the price $565 at the local Gander Mountain, I could own it today, or I can wait a couple of months and buy a Springfield for $899.

I believe Taurus guarantees there pistols for life, to the original purchaser. Don't think you need to worry about replacement of working parts.

Others on here have said bad things about customer service, "Lifetime warranty = lifetime wait"

I'm also thinking of a Taurus PT1911.  What do other members think?

I asked a similar question way back when. Look through the old threads- http://www.downrange.tv/forum/index.php?topic=450.0 and http://www.downrange.tv/forum/index.php?topic=280.0
LOTS of good advice from all, right on up to the BANE of our existence, Mr. Mike.

Went to the range this morning and talked to the guy who I posted on a past thread about his dealings with Taurus. He told me he finally got so feed up with dealing with them he had them send back his model 99SS (9mm). Three months wait and it still didn't get fixed. So he traded it in. He is the one who said lifetime warranty, lifetime wait. He went on to tell me it doesn't matter if its a roll pin for sight, or a firing issue it has to be sent in and you will wait and wait. And they will not send you a replacement part unless you pay for it. I can understand the reasoning behind that. They probably don't want to be responsible for their product if he/she hacks up the repair. He even offered on one occasion to send in the bad part so he could receive a free replacement  no dice. Now I'm not blasting Taurus I own 2 of their pistols and would buy another. But now I will takes some time to think about it where as before I would of just bought it. We are human and firearms will break. But your company is only as good as its ability to get the repair done in a timely fashion. Case in point. I just got back my 45 Long Slide back from Springfield for some warranty work. It only slept over there for 2 weeks. And I got it back. Also when I looked at the pistol I noticed a cracked slide stop pin. I thought oh! great I just got it back and I'm going to have to send it back. I thought I was going to have a problem with them. NOPE :) they sent the part out. I got it in 3 days and I was good to go. They didn't even want the broken part sent back. I suppose my point to all of this is. Ask the people that own the firearm. They are your best resource on how good the company backs up their product. I made two firearm purchases in the past 3 weeks just on the say so of eveyone on this forum. PARA 3" 45 acp Warthog (used), Springfield XD 9mm, 4" (new). Just because it looks good and is priced low doesn't mean its a deal. Good Luck.

For roughly the same amount of money I would get a Para SSP 745 it has all of the features you want , Outstanding product with Outstanding Customer Service. I have a PCX 745E and have run 2000 rounds through it. It did have some problems though they where minor  and  Georgre Wedge helped me out . Para's customer service was great, I had it back in a week. The only Pistols I will buy are 1911"s buy Para or Colt.

Thanks for the replies.  I might take the plunge and buy a Taurus.  Still debating.  The 1911 site is great.

I have a Kimber Eclipses that has close to 3000 round through and never had a problem with. I was at the range and a buddy was there with his Springfield , went back next week and he showed up with a Kimber that he traded his Springfield in for and I asked why did you do that? Because yours shoot a lot better than mine did! He hasn't been sorry.

I broke the captive recoil spring assemble in my 24/7. I called Taurus and was going to buy a new assemble because I broke it and it was my fault, not the guns. I spoke to a fellow named Mike, he told me to send the broken assemble to him and he would replace it free of charge. He did and I received a new assemble in about a week. Don't know if I am the exception to the rule, but to me that is good service.

Blvedere, is yours a long slide 24/7 or just the regular model?  I might go handle one of the Long Slide versions of that pistol.  I am tempted by the Para Ordinance Super Hawg Long Slide but I don't know if I can ever afford the $1400 price tag.

Mine is a short slide, I bought it for my Grandaughter. The gun feels good to me and I like the sa/da trigger set up. Don't know what a 1911 sells for ,but I would guess it is about half the Para...

I dunno about the Taurus 1911 or not. At one point I was considering trying one myself. That is until I went to the shoot range with a buddy of mine who had a almost new Taurus 1911. It looked nice. The price he payed was cheap for a 1911. However, when he shot it..  he was all over the place. I took my Glock 23 .40 and smoke'd him.  ;D But, the thing is I could have taken almost anything and smoke'd him. For whatever reason his Taurus was not accurate. He tried 3 different kinds of .45 ammo.. all with similar results. Another guy at the range shot a mag of this guys ammo through his Kimber 1911 and his shots were all close to the bullseye. My buddy traded the gun off shortly after. So, I dunno.. maybe it was a bad apple of the bunch????

I love my pt1911 even after 850 rounds and 9 months of carry. Looking at it you can see the finish realing starting to wear yet I've only had a few actual malfunctions. Namely 1 failure to extract and twice the slide stop failed to engage once closing the slide with an empty chamber and once locking open with a round in the mag. Both I attribute to mags and a new shooter I had with me using it when this happened. No big issue there. I have be able to use aftermarket parts with no trouble including the Kimber .22 conversion, grips, commander style hammer I changed out and a heavier duty recoil spring to help ensure functionallity when using TAP FPD .45ACP +P. Something Taurus said not to do. If Dick Metcalf trusts it and Michael Bane thinks highly of it for a 1911 in it's price range then I say give it a try.

I just bought a Taurus 1911 with Crimson Trace red dot grips. It retailed out for $720.00 and I got it for 689.00 +tax.  I went to the range, shot 400 rounds of different .45 loads thru it and it functioned real well.  It even takes my 7 shot Colt Mags which are all stainless and functions supperb.  Rich642z,Omaha,Ne ;) ;) ;)

You know what? Sooner or later I'm going to end up with a Taurus...not sure which...maybe several.
I've heard that they're junk at two of four gun shops. One of them was a very snobby place (and they didn't SELL Taurus) and one is a small local shop where the guy is a nice fella but couldn't think his way out of a restroom on a 747. So I don't know.

Hey...oh no, ....here I go again....
We do have DRTV who's got our backs...maybe they could get Taurus to let us all test some of their guns for a few thousand rounds and SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT.
I volunteer.

I just bought a PT1911, and had it at the range with some of my reloads. It ate everything I fed it and was fairly accurate to 15 yards ( the limit of 55yearold eyes). This is about the tenth Taurus pistol I've owned over the years, and I've never really had a service issue with any of them. This compares to the Springfield GI .45 and the Ruger P345 that I purchased, that were very picky about the ammo I tried to fire through them.

Just pulled the trigger and bought one, will report how it shoots as soon as I go to the range.  I have Ruger, Smith and Springfield, thought I would give this a try.

Actually, with my experience with Ruger, how bad could a Taurus be?

I have a stainless PT1911. Had a problem with 3 point jams with a variety of magazines out of the box. Figured out it was out of time and "riding the link". Called Taurus Customer Service and described the problem. They were informed, intelligent relative to guns and seemed qresponsive and Sent it back to Taurus

I've been pretty happy with mine until just now. I was transferring my carry ammo to my Para, which I decided to carry for a while and when I pushed the safety down to clear the pistol (I'm left handed) the safety went down on the right side of the pistol, but did not release the thumb safety.  ???

Even worse, when I removed the thumb safety the plunger flew to parts unknown.  :-[

I finally got to the range, and all I can say is  WHAT A SWEET GUN.  Put 200 rounds through it, not one jam, and it hits what I point at.  At 12 yds it groups about 6" free hand.  My kid shoots it even better.  25 yds groups the size of the bottom of a coffee can.    ;D
