For all of you who have wished me ill, I have good news. ;D My freaking A/C died. I thought it just need new coolant, but no dice. By the time the repair costs for re-insulating, finding a leak and fixing the condensor were totaled I was looking at around $2k on an 11 year old unit that could break the day after they fixed it. So I bit the bullet and bought a new one. I am now out $4500 that I really don't have. Upside is that I bought a Trane and it should be good for a decade at least, and the A/C compancy is family owned and has been in business for fifty years. So I have no doubts that I'm getting a good product and a solid company. I also getabout $900 in utility rebates and tax credits. Still a kick in the balls though. :P Oh well, it could be worse. I could be Bin Laden. ;D

Sorry to hear that 'FQ' [ I stlill have trouble typing 'FQ' after watching "House of Cards" - a Brit Tv miniseries starring the deliciously evil Francis Urquart ("FU") ] based - not a little, on Shakespeare's "Macbeth" and well worth the Netfix charge.
My own A/C expired a few weeks ago during an exceptionally hot spring week-end and as itself was a well used 11year old system I expected the worst...........but it turned out to be no more than an expired capacitor - this time!
"You might well think that ............, I could not possibly comment" -FU

It really wouldn't have mattered. The trouble with most newer homes in Florida is that the designs make them humidity traps. Even if you opened all the windows, you'll be looking at a mildew problem in short order. You need the central A/C, or at least the fan part, to circulate air and control the humiity. Hell, I can't even open my sliding glass doors. If I put the screens up I'd have a dog shaped hole in them. If I didn't I'd come home to find a squirrel and an iguana sitting on my couch, drinking my beer and watching pay-per-view porn. :-\ ;D

Sorry brother. I'm in line for a new roof and garage door this month.....ouch. I feel your pain.
Then on the other hand you are in Florida.....sunny beaches and no snow. It's 47 this morning in Hotlanta!

Just the reverse on my part! Had to have a new furnace installed. Should have done it sooner but didn't.

Over here (land of sand) if your AC is working the generators usually go out and it just sucks. It will be 104 this week. I hate hot weather.

We went and kayaked a really nasty section of the North Platte on Sat. (Fremont Canyon) Every 5 min. it alternated between full sun and 40 degrees, to snowing so hard you couldn't see 30 ft in front of you. Gotta love spring in Wyoming.

Umm, JC, I don't think that I have ever been drunk enough to expose my body to cold white water during a snowstorm. You guys really, really need to move. I mean hell, my biggest hardship is that I will be without A/C today when its expected to hit 85 (ALMOST warm enough to go swimming ;D). Tonight, as the A/C still won't be working, I will go fishing in the surf. My biggest threat will be a bullshark, not hypothermia. ;)

Right there with you FQ.
All the storms a couple months ago revealed the roof leaked in two places. We got it patched but the shingles are original to the house (20+yrs) so needed to be replaced. $8K later and last Fri the roof was replaced.
"Well since we're painting, maybe we should replace the carpetting." $8K
"The office door needs to be replaced, and since we're painting and replaceing the flooring, maybe we should replace all the doors so they match." $750 in paint/doors
"The lighting isn't good in the hallway, living room, and downstairs, we should replace them too. Downstairs only has a couple power recepticals, could we add a couple more?" $500
Lowes loves me!! >:(

Don't mean to pile onto your current problems FQ, but I read a report that states these are moving into your local.

I wish my ac had went out! We're just finishing putting up a shop, paving and all that fun stuff.

I just ate it for $7,200.00 for an entire new system last month. What a difference! My old system was 13 years old and was never quite large enough. Plus it was a cheap builder grade system that was poorly designed. The plenum created a dead spot, and air just never seemed to move in enough volume. The air coming out of the vents was cold, but there just never seemed to be enough of it.
Now it blows like hell, and the cooling effect is much more profound and evenly distributed. The system is larger and much more energy efficient. They also installed a complete new gas fired furnace. I can't complain about the install. Everything went into the attic. At first they told me they would have to cut open the attic access opening. Something I was not looking forward to fixing. They then told me they could disassemble the unit, then reassemble it in the attic. They worked 12 hours start to finish and they didn't have to cut into anything. They even came back the next day to re engineer my cold air return because he didn't like the way it was done. The new unit is also all but silent compared to the old one that roared. The heating system is also much more even in the way it spreads the warm air. I went from a SEER 10 to a SEER 16, so I should see some savings this Summer. Bill T.

Actually properly equipped..(that is, a full wetsuit base layer for warmth, and a drysuit over everything, I WAY overheated) I went under and completely submerged once in the run, and when I got out, I was still completely dry. Granted you do have to be able to overcome the shock of 36 degree water on your head and the inevitable ice cream headache. But hells bells the runoff is fan-f$%king-tastic this year and I'm not going to miss out. ;D
I need Phil's signature right about now..... ::)

I just call the landlord and the next day I'm back in business. Granted, I have a good landlord...I'll never own another money pit for as long as I live...

VERY nice! I thought for sure that cutting would have to be done.
You will definitely see less $$ going to APS this summer! ;D
