It never rains, but it pours
« on: May 03, 2011, 09:54:19 PM »
For all of you who have wished me ill, I have good news. ;D My freaking A/C died. I thought it just need new coolant, but no dice. By the time the repair costs for re-insulating, finding a leak and fixing the condensor were totaled I was looking at around $2k on an 11 year old unit that could break the day after they fixed it. So I bit the bullet and bought a new one. I am now out $4500 that I really don't have. Upside is that I bought a Trane and it should be good for a decade at least, and the A/C compancy is family owned and has been in business for fifty years. So I have no doubts that I'm getting a good product and a solid company.  I also getabout $900 in utility rebates and tax credits. Still a kick in the balls though. :P Oh well, it could be worse. I could be Bin Laden. ;D

Sorry to hear that  'FQ' [ I stlill have trouble typing 'FQ' after watching "House of Cards" - a Brit Tv miniseries starring the deliciously evil  Francis Urquart ("FU") ] based - not a little, on Shakespeare's "Macbeth" and well worth the Netfix charge.

My own A/C expired a few weeks ago during an exceptionally hot spring week-end and as itself was a well used 11year old system I expected the worst...........but it turned out to be no more than an expired capacitor - this time!

It really wouldn't have mattered. The trouble with most newer homes in Florida is that the designs make them humidity traps. Even if you opened all the windows, you'll be looking at a mildew problem in short order. You need the central A/C, or at least the fan part, to circulate air and control the humiity. Hell, I can't even open my sliding glass doors. If I put the screens up I'd have a dog shaped hole in them. If I didn't I'd come home to find a squirrel and an iguana sitting on my couch, drinking my beer and watching pay-per-view porn. :-\ ;D

Amen brother. Alligators, sharks, and iguanas oh my! I'll cheerfully pay for a new A/C if I can fly fish in February. ;D

Sorry brother.  I'm in line for a new roof and garage door this month.....ouch.   I feel your pain.

Then on the other hand you are in Florida.....sunny beaches and no snow.   It's 47 this morning in Hotlanta!

Just the reverse on my part!  Had to have a new furnace installed.  Should have done it sooner but didn't.

Over here (land of sand) if your AC is working the generators  usually go out and it just sucks. It will be 104 this week. I hate hot weather.
