Title: What did you guys think of the new "True Grit"?
Post by: Badgersmilk on June 08, 2011, 08:46:37 PM
I guess on it's own merrits I thought it was good.  I'd never even compare it to the original though!

We've had several threads on this one, but the above takes you to my review.

And yes!  I know I screwed up the cat's name  :-[

Knew we'd gone over what we thought about the idea of the remake.  But figured a few if not many had seen it now that it's out on redbox.  ;)  That's about the fist place anyone I know gets to see new movies anymore.  None of us can stand paying $8+ bucks, then having to listen to a pack of idiots talking durring the entire movie.  Going to theaters hasn't been an option for YEARS!   :(

I DID cave in and go see Zombieland in the theater.  Ended up getting the DVD anyway!  :)

Aside from the fact that Bridges takes mumbling to levels never before heard, I enjoyed the remake.  Still, the Duke was the better Rooster.

I cant remember a remake that was better than the original.

I believe the story telling is better in the remake, and I would love to see the original case, even Glen, work with the new script.

Yeah right!?!  I had to watch his first few scene's at least twice to translate.  Made me wonder if people should have been calling him "Mushmouth" instead of "Rooster".   :-\

I like both, but that pricing HARDLY seems right.   :-\

Think of it this way - there are 3 copies for $19.96 (or $6.65 each), and only 1 copy for The Duke's $7.50. Better?

Original with The Duke  $7.50
Remake with other people $10

It's simple,
John Wayne is dead, his estate has been settled, the  $2.50 difference is the royalty they don't have to pay him .

IMHO....John Wayne was great as John Wayne.....and Jeff Bridges was good as Rooster Cogburn....

.....and I liked the new supporting cast better than Campbell and Darby.....

Glen Campbell made one wonder about the "manliness" (and intelligence ) of Texas Rangers.

I thought the remake was very good with a few questions. At the end, Rooster, riding double with snakebit Matty rides right past Ned Peppers horse. Plus three other horses belonging to dead gangmembers. Considering  that in this new version LaBouef, the texas ranger, is still alive, he is dead in the original. With all those horses wandering about why isn't he helping Rooster?

Matties horse, little Blacky, collapses and has to be shot as Rooster rides him to death trying to get Matty to medical help. He had other horses he could have taken with him. Just seemed sloppy to me.

Oh and bye the way, With LaBouef still alive at the end we miss one one of the great lines in the original movie.

Rooster: "Damn that Texan, every time you need him he's dead ! "

I'll let you know tomorrow after I watch it tonight.  Seems someone has already given me the ending....

thanks for that DGF......

Would have been nice to see that socialist Damon get his head smashed in like Campbells...

Sorry Tim, didn't think telling the ending of a remake that most everyone has seen would make much difference.

Just finished watching it. Haven't figured out all of the reasons why, but I thought it was very poorly done. I have not read the book, so I am guessing that the highly unsatisfactory ending (IMHO) was part of the original story.

Random thoughts -

- The music was mostly just awful; the scene where Le Bouef says he misjudged Mattie and offers her his hand was almost drowned out with syrupy sappy music; just awful; OTOH, the Iris Dement song at the end was wonderful

- It seemed to drag in a lot of areas, including the parts that were not in the John Wayne version so they should have been interesting as they were new

- What is the point of filming crucial scenes at night in really dark darkness? Kinda hard to see what's going on unless you have a real theater with no windows - maybe

- Josh Brolin phones his miniscule role in - and he got 3rd billing in the credits; Hailee Steinfield was like 10th and she was in almost every scene

- Matt Damon was just about the worst possible person to play the role of Le Bouef; OK, maybe Rosie O'Donnell or Timothy Dalton; I liked Damon in the Bourne movies,  but man, in this he sucked;

Of course, just today I was accused of being a old fuddy duddy . . .  ::)

The girl that played Mattie great.

I would have rather seen Sam Elliot play Rooster.

As for Le Bouef, Seriously Matt Damon, but he is better that most of the sissies in hollyweird.

Got tired last night so watch about an hour and went to bed.  Just finished watching the rest.

Unimpressed!

Pepper playing Pepper was a nice touch if it was intended and I thought Pepper did a good job reprising Duvals character.  I didn't read the book either and whether this was a closer representation of the novel vs the original I don't know.  I suspect that they made Cogburn out to be the cad he was rather than the likeable John Wayne version.

Only cost me a buck so for that, I'm good!

I think the new version is much better than the original.  It's darker and more realistic.  I also liked how jaded  Mattie became later on.  I also liked how the writer's let her be a little girl in the way she tried to ease the tension between Rooster and La Bouef during their ,I believe, first night on the hunt.

I also liked noticing the huge cultural differences between the two movies.

The John Wayne movie is so optomistic it's unreal.  It's chock full of the "We're number one and can do nothing wrong!"  attitude that we got after winning WW-II and having a huge boost in our economy.  (As a note:  I am not saying that as an insult or slam.  I am noticing the differences here.)

The new one fit's todays outlook.  Tough and gritty.  Character's full of weaknesses and problems, yet still willing to get the job done.  ANd they actually smoked on screen.  When was the last time you saw that?

Ran across this, it might interest some folk because, as noted, some of Cogburn's speech is somewhat indiscernible.

It is the DRTV version of the degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon:  How many posts on a movie does it take to get to Blazing Saddles?

I just saw it last night and have to agree with Ulmus and Seeker. I like the remake.

I thought the original was OK when I saw it the first time....but I was 12. Even then Campbell/Darby sucked. The only thing more wooden was the caskets.
In movies, John Wayne played John Wayne with different outfits and names.

Its because you're distracted Bill. Too many guns, it gives you ADD. Send me a couple and it'll clear that problem right up. I won't even charge you for my services. ;D

His bigger problem is that he only has two hands when decision time comes:

On one hand there are the guns, and on the other there is Miss Legs, and on the other is ummmm, ahhhhh, ahhhhh, I've only got two hands  :-\
