Saw this video of the dust storm that hit Phoenix. It looks like the freaking End Times. Seventh bowl, seventh trumpet, "Lord almighty Mabel, there's zombies on the lawn get the shotgun!" kind of stuff. Hell, if I saw footage of that rolling towards me, step one would be checking to see if I had a spare set of undies to go with my spare mag. ;D Hope you had your car in the garage bill.

PS God help the poor SOBs on that plane that got swallowed.

Looks pretty normal to me. I was in one as a kid in Phoenix that looked just like that, at least to a 14 year old. I watched that sucker come on us as we scrambled to get from the parking lot to whatever it was we were going to. Covered our noses and mouth and endured maybe 30 seconds outside in the storm until we got to the door.

Looks like a scene from a couple of Sci-Fi movies to me......

Research "1930's dust bowl" because of over grazing, and over farming the top 6 inches of several states blew into the Atlantic.

Saw a documentary on the dust-bowl days and have read several articles.

Remember that post about stocking up a roll of plastic sheeting and duct tape for windows and doors?
How hard is it to find air filters for your a/c system and car after that mess passes through?!?
I'd guess if you've got a pool the best thing to do is just throw some grass seed on top and pretend it was never there. :(

I'll take snow anytime..... f..k that!

Hey Tim, What do you think caused "the Desert of Maine" ?
It wasn't there in the 20's, part of the Dakota's landed there.

It's glacial silt brought down from the last ice age ain't it? Eventually over farming exposed the silt and now they keep it that way for the tourists....or so the website says. I'd heard of it before but never checked.....

Actually I think it was trucked in for the tourists.

Look at the pictures, that is NOT "glacial silt". Glacial silt is the ground stone you find in rocky river beds.
My grandmother used to tell stories about when it happened.

No doubt there is a bit of the Dakotas, Oklahoma, Kansas and any number of dust bowls form the thirties all over the US. Heck, we have pieces of Chernobyl here in the US...
I was just reading the site Tom, I'm not arguing with your Grandma....
;) ;)

My son lives in Freeport 5 miles from it. I lived 20 miles from it before moving to the other lesser known desert in the west.

Timothy..........I was sort of half joking so don't take my word for it as I really don't know where it came from.
Everyone in the area has their own opinion. We all just used to joke about being hauled in as it seemed to magically keep growing and became a tourist trap.
What is interesting is the fact that the sand is higher than the surrounding wooded area. Seems to me that if it was there the whole time and has been exposed over time that it would be on the same plain or slightly lower than the surrounding area.

Having grown up in Western Michigan, sand can and does do some strange things. There are lakes on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan that are close to the big lakes shoreline that will eventually be completely filled in due to the movement of the sand. The Great Lakes, Finger Lakes and most of the northern US are all glacial effected. Long Island sound is an estuary made by glacial movement and Long Island is the pile of rubble that was at the southern "nose" of the glacier.
It's cool stuff for whatever or whomever keeps it interesting... :D

Eww. I've been to Kansas a few times... Didn't need to hear any of that might be stuck to the bottom of my shoe. :(
