Curious if your opinions have changed on this at all over the last few weeks.
-
I keep hearing the talking heads ay "even if they pass the bill in both houses obama will just veto it" GOOD, Let him veto it, Then I'd like to see how he can blame Bush for all the problems as he has in the past.
-
Problem we've got is that the GOP, with the exception of the Tea Party delegation, aren't serious about making things too difficult for the Dems.
They realize that they will have to abide by what ever strong measures are taken to stave off our economic problems when they get back in the driver's seat.
-
Do you think this bs that is happening well end up shooting the republicans in the foot and end up loosing the support of there supporters.

RINOS? One can only hope. Tea Party, doubtful, the deal isn't even good enough to matter or be a cause of all this fuss.
The House passed it, with 22 RINOs and every damn dumbocrat voting against it. The Senate immediately shot it down.
-
This is a made up crises. The revenue to the Gov. is +/- $200 BILLION a month. Interest on the debt is +/- 29 BILLION. Suddenly, BHO is "willing to let" Aug. 2 pass for an extension to work it all out.....
But the MSM, and BHO, and Pelosi, all say the "world" will end, old people will starve, SS checks won't go out, the Military won't get paid,.....
Please,.....as I have posted before,....we are being played.
The Dems offer nothing but tax increases, and that's it. The Tea Party Reps. cannot be bribed, in the usual inside the beltway method, and the RINO's and career Republicans are realizing it.
It's called a reality slap.....With elections coming again in 18 months....We (the informed folk), are not forgetting, and we're pissed.
The low information voter, doesn't care.
This is all a big game, and WE THE PEOPLE, are the chumps.

Along these lines, TW, I posted the following in another thread (on Pelosi) earlier today:
"Hey everybody......watch my left hand.....yes, yes...keep watching my left hand....no,no...never mind my right hand, just keep watching the left one."

Why the HELL would we increase the debt ceiling?!?
Let's look at this another way:
You and your spouse like the finer things in life. New vehicles, nice house, everything that money can buy. But you control yourself enough that you can BARELY make the minimum payments on your 12 or 13 credit cards. Then something happens and your wife goes apeshit nuts buying high-end things that you DON'T need. Suddenly, your cards are maxed out, your bank balance is $0, and the payments necessary to maintain your lifestyle exceed your income.
Do you:
A) Call the credit card company and demand an increase in your credit limit, and demand that your boss increase your salary to a level that WILL allow you to maintain your lifestyle?
OR
B) Cut up the damn credit cards, sell off the luxuries you've acquired, and alter your lifestyle so that you can support it on what you make?
To me, this is a no-brainer. Perhaps that's why the no-brain crowd in Washington, and the voters they buy with OUR money, can't get a grasp of the concept.
-
“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.” (Congressional Record, p. S2237 [March 2006])

Maybe I haven't been clear 'bout this, but:

I'd allow a debt ceiling increase for a good Balanced Budget Amendment.
With that Amendment, the debt would go away..maybe slowly, but go away.
The government could only spend what it is taking in and included in the spending would be debt payments and other contractual expenses first and everything else after that (and I'd put payroll of Congress at the bottom of the list).
There would never be justification for another loan since that is spending beyond what is in the budget.
Expenditures would need to be cut to match income.
The only way for government to raise more income would be in taxes (in all it's forms) or tariffs (which was once thought the only means for income), and we have better success at fighting tax increases that all this other stuff.
-
I've tried to think of ways an increase might be beneficial, but they keep coming back to the fact that it's got to be stopped somewhere. Tomorrow won't be any better a time than today. They won't use any additional money in a way to improve anything, they'll just dig the hole deeper. Unfortunate, undeniable truth. :(
twyacht, and Peg are 100% right imo. BUT! What the heck is in the right hand??? What is it the dirty snakes doing behind their backs? We, or certainly I can't figure it out because it's just to well hidden at this point. We could easily speculate, cough, cough, One World Economy / Government!
A brave sheep is a pain in the a$$ to control. It resists commands, won't stay in the corral, encourages other brave sheep. A scared sheep (read: American Public at large), is EASY to control! To scared to go outside the corral (no telling what could happen without someone to protect me!), happily listens to commands from the bama shepherd (he's protecting me!). And a scared, lazy, happy sheep probably won't resist so much when the shepherd sneaks up behind him one lonely night. :o :(
So yeah, I think they'll raise the limit and "make the problems all just go away" now that we're all sufficiently scared. But am still scared of whats in that right hand!

For one thing, it pushed "Fast and Furious" off the front page. No news about regulatory policy changes, everything has been about the "Debt Ceiling" rip off.

<SNIP>
This is all a big game, and WE THE PEOPLE, are the chumps.
EXACTLY To add to that the 29 billion is what is needed August through Jan. 1 for 5 months. One trillion in, one trillion out and they can't cut 29 billion? They don't want to...WE ARE CHUMPS. They want to raise the debt 2.7 trillion...DON'T BE A CHUMP, this is the end of us sort of like what happened to fold the USSR but only with the hands of fellow citizens who have either turned into party loving socialists/communists or who are selfish enough to be traitors and sell out the what was once the greatest nation on earth to improve their position in life.
I'd allow a debt ceiling increase for a good Balanced Budget Amendment.
<SNIP>
We all want to do the "right" thing, but faith in doing the "right" thing implicitly means you can trust those you are trying to control with laws or regulations to do the "right" thing which is the fallacy in such thinking as well wishing as it is. All that the Balanced Budget Ammendment will do is take Congress out of the loop of their Constitutional responsibility and put the President in control their business. He, the president, can then decide to shut down military bases, mothball or sell aircraft carriers and support ships, despite what the congress says or puts in their bill. Earmarks are not the evil, it's the character of the people who use them that is evil and removing earmarks will concentrate the decision to a single person, the president which is not smart...especially with this guy in control. Not much character in the president, he can say he is doing anything in the name of the Balanced Budget Ammendment to stay lawful by creating a crisis, real or imagined, in some other part of the budget. Earmarks have supported the nation in the past when the President (others not this one) would not by protecting essential services and defense needs....Congress will no longer be able to do that with the ammendment as proposed...the Prez can do what he wants with the money to stay balanced so what will this guy cut...time for us all to wise up to this "chumpy" smoke and mirror. John McCain is not right in the head for supporting this but for full disclosure, I think he needs a good old fashioned ass whipping anyway.
I've tried to think of ways an increase might be beneficial, but they keep coming back to the fact that it's got to be stopped somewhere. Tomorrow won't be any better a time than today. .<SNIP>............
EXACTLY Well wishing on our part to do the right thing will fail because we will be used and believing that the additional money will help only serves to confirm that such a person who believes that is but a CHUMP.

I have been watching the debates in the house and senate today and my blood is boiling...I have to walk away......Watching people who voted in the past to put us in this predicament now want to talk about getting serious about deficit reduction WHILE PUTTING US FURTHER IN DEBT...... >:(

several times in my life i've done A, other then going to the boss and ask for more money( I'm the boss)
What I owe would shock the hell out of you. between me and my biz partner we are right at about 3 mill floating now. broke 1 mill in gross sales last month, it took a little over 6 months. We currently have 14 employees and are seeing about 200k come in the door every month.

That's a big difference, you borrowed "investment Capital to finance starting a business which is generating income for you, your partners, and your employees as well as making the payments on the loan.
The Govt. on the other hand extorts money from the rest of us so they can piss it away bribing, bums, whores, and illegal aliens to vote for them.
These assholes could not show a profit running a whore house and they expect us to give them more money to piss away ?
Are they stupid for continuing to try to shake us down ?
Or are we stupid for allowing it?

What I personally think should happen is that bho, his advisers and "czars", and most of the Congress should be declared Enemies of the United States ala the old Roman custom.
I have had it with being sold out, I have had it with being played, I have had it with the whole play being produced in DC these days - and that which has been allowed to be played at our expense - and to our detriment - over the past 60 years.
These people are power-mad statists, not Americans. They take that name only by accident of birth.

Democrat/Liberal/Socialist,......Balanced Budget Amendment.... ???...... to actually be sent to the states for ratification??????\
Where's that emoticon rolling on the floor.....????
The Dems will NEVER vote for a BBA....They do not have it within their DNA. and remember those evil corporate jet owners, and oil companies just pass the cost increases to US the consumer.....
Tax the oil companies more, or take away "breaks"?????
You'll see $5.00 + gas by Christmas. Let alone heating oil, kerosene, jet fuel,....(air fare prices soar).....and the trickle down effect will be even worse.
We're f*****.

What has really gone wrong? The US constitution says only Congress can authorise the government to borrow money. Since 1962 Congress has raised the debt ceiling 72 times. The Government needs to borrow money to pay back those bills, bonds and notes and to pay the pension funds.
In 1979, a rule was passed that allowed the House of Representatives to automatically raise the debt limit to whatever level the budget needed. But in January 2011, the House voted to repeal this rule. Now they need to hold a separate vote to increase the debt limit. And that's where it has all gone pear shaped. They can't agree on how that should be done.
When Obama took office in January 2009 US public debt stood at $10.6tn. Two years later the debt limit of $14.3tn was reached. Pension payments have been postponed and by August 2 the Government won't have enough money to pay their bills. Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, says that after August 2, the Treasury will prioritise payments on federal debt.
The Republicans control the House of Representatives. They want to reduce the debt by cutting government spending.
The Democrats were calling for a mix of tax increases as well as spending cuts. But their latest plan threw out the tax increases. It still wasn't good enough for Republicans though because they said it didn't cut spending enough.

Simple answer, ideology has gotten in the way of common sense. Spending needs to be slashed and taxes need to be raised, every adult knows that. Both parties have gotten elected playing Santa Clause though. Tax and spend Dems, and Borrow and spend Republicans and nobody wanted to talk about what happened when you maxed out the Visa. Seriously, the GOP is playing the virtuous party when they controlled the House and Senate from 1994 till 2006 and did nothing to control spending? And they have the same leadership? And how many budgets did W veto? Could it be Zero? >:( And then the Dems are acting blameless when they have no concept of fiscal responsibility. They only talk about how people are "entitled" to things, not how other people have to pay for them. Your entitlement comes out of my pocket, lets talk about that! >:(
Its a sad day when Americans can't get behind the idea that when you get in debt you have to slash spending and increase income. How many of us didn't get that when we were 14? ::)

Uh, cuz maybe it's intentional, 'tard? Seriously, do I have to hit you over the head with their damn script for the past 60 years to help you understand that none of this is an accident? Or maybe the transcript from the Bretton Woods II conference?
What you describe is simply the divisive tactic they use to keep us at each others' throats so we pay no attention to the man behind the curtain manipulating us.
-
No, taxes do not need to be raised.
Congress needs to learn how to live with what they've got. Or less.
The current tax levels are crippling the economic recovery, if anything they need to be cut.
Then slash the Govt. meddling in the private sector to free up investment capital that people are sitting on.
Let's say you have a chunk of extra money, and 2 options, #1 is to sock it away in either gold or some other safe place, #2 leaves you with the potential of govt seizure, and guaranteed punitive tax rates, while minimizing your control of your own assets.
The consistent choice through out recorded history has been door #1.

Oh, you mean the one they had up here a while back ?
The one hosted by George (the Man behind the curtain ) Soros ?
Yeah FQ, you know, the guy who owns huge chunks of Petrobras, (which BO gave $ 2 Bn to drill in the Gulf right after he dfied the courts and reinstated his ban on American drilling ) and about 1/4- 1/2 of Russia's GazProm.
The same George (MBTC ) Soros who donates $ Bns to support , The Daily Kos, Democrat underground, the Joyce Foundation, the UN small arms treaty, etc etc.
It's just a coincidence.

Wrong answer Tom. Look, Nonew (or any) taxes isn't policy to the GOP, its religion. Let's grow up. We paid for the government with tariffs for most of our history. Lets revisit those. Outsourced jobs and profits should be taxed at a higher rate than those generated domestically. NAFTA, lets reexamine that. And the artificially low rate of the Yuan ought to to be matched with a tariff on Chinese goods until it floats like every other currency. Sorry, but some taxes make sense.

-
FU FQ, You are quoting my ( often posted ) platform position.
The point is, they are not taxes on us "rich" people.
TEA party, Taxed Enough Already.
Unless congress gets shut off they will continue demanding more and more.
If you support increased taxes you are an enabler, you support bad, expansive, irresponsible, wasteful, government, and increasing welfare participation, declining US test scores, and an increasingly less healthy economy.

The Gov't pays hundreds of thousands of dollars studying smelt,....getting chimps stoned,...and wasting money....The list is endless to our lovely Gov't paying $450 for a multi directional impact device.
h
AKA,.....A STUPID HAMMER!!!!!
The marginal tax rate was cut by JFK, and revenues to the gov, went UP.....Same as Reagan,.......We are taxed enough...
What part of "taxation without representation" are you still bending over for?????
-
What was the hammer intended to be used for ?
Where?
Under what conditions ?
You have to be careful using tools as examples of Govt waste.
My Mother was involved in the $600 coffee maker.
What the Media told you was the Air Force paid $600 for a coffee maker and acted as if it were a $20 Mr. Coffee.
The facts were that it was intended for the J-Stars surveillance aircraft so the crew could have coffee, to stay awake, alert, and a little warmer, during their missions. Mr. Coffee won't cut it. among the requirements , it had to be stainless steel, they had only one place it could be fit in with out interfering with the computers and stuff, and it was an odd shaped space, it could not generate any kind off electrical interference, it had to work above 35,000 feet, and a bunch of other stuff.
There are enough other examples of Govt. waste to use as examples, like teaching Chinese whores to drink responsibly, that you do not need to use tools, where the expense might actually be justified .

Quaker,
You are completely wrong here. We do not have have a revenue and spending problem, we have a spending problem! The answer is not, and has never been, more taxes. They always find a way to spend what little revenue they raise and revenue projections are never, I mean never, on target; they are woefully overestimated.

Well, FA where does the money come from? The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan don't pay for themselves (though Cheney assured us Iraq would ::)). What about Korea and Iran? We also don't have roads and schools springing up like mushrooms. You and Tom may dis me, but the bottom line is that every dime spent has to be paid for by a dime in taxes. There is no other way. The fact that this statement is even slightly controversial is an example of how FUBARED our political debate has gotten.

Our gov't has a spending problem,....it's called PORK....The almost trillion dollar stimulus plan,....for shovel ready jobs, infrastructure, schools etc,.. was a LIE.
It kept local unions fat and happy, and is a slush fund for the political elite, and those with a brown enough nose,....
It's the economy stupid,.........NO,....it's not.....
It's the gov't spending,....
Guilty by both parties,...and Dems voted in support of Iraq, and Afghanistan, and the empty suit that is BHO....surged again, failed to close Guantanamo, fed the unions,...printed more money,....appointed a tax cheat to the Sec. Of Treas. and catered to his far left socialist base. Who love Mother Teresa, and Mao....
Gov't broken? Damn right it is,....and both parties are at fault....But I would go hunting with Cheney. before driving with Ted Kennedy...oh wait,....he's still sober now....
My bad,...

That part is absolutely correct, the point that you can't seem to get is that a large portion of the dimes spent are being thrown into wishing wells.
Foreign aid to countries that hate and oppose us, the counter productive "war on drugs", bloated staffs, duplicated effort by multiple agencies, useless and ineffectual agencies, These are all sources of waste that run into the 10's, if not 100's of billions of dollars yearly.
That doesn't even begin to address, poor or no accounting, pork, and actual criminal activity, it's just the simple stuff.

Tool!!!!
The .gov takes in over $180 billion a month. Ya think we can run the feebs on that? There is more than enough income to run the feebs. They do not need more, they need to stop spending. No, they need to REDUCE spending.
News item yesterday - The GAO discovered that the NIH sent your freakin' tax dollars to Chine. TO EFFIN CHINA!

Sigh. Headlines today say a deal is in the works where the debt ceiling will be raised 2.4 trillion and Congress will vote on a balanced budget amendment.
To me it was a given the debt ceiling would be raised. Too many of the GOP love to spend at the same pace as the Dems.
And fat chance a balanced budget amendment will pass congress.
So, we will get the raised debt ceiling without the balanced budget amendment.
Like I said, I'd be satisfied with a debt ceiling increase IF the balanced budget amendment were guaranteed.
Of course, I guess it take quite a while to get an Amendment ratified, well beyond the time frame of our current crisis hype..

While the coffee maker was legit. I was once ordering the brake for the leading edge flaps on a F-16. Having just taken the parts off the plane myself, it was pretty evident they were the same from left, to right side. Went to order them both and found one to be aprox. $600, and the other over $13,000. Dug out a manual, and sure enough. "Interchangeable". :(

Patched in here from another board, written by a chap whose writings I admire: - the thread was entitled "It's already too late"
"The Dems are trying to focus everyone on a possible default (and credit rating agency downgrade) caused by GOP reluctance to increase the debt limit, in order to distract from rating agency downgrades based on Democrat deficit spending.
Dems have no hope of running on Obama's record, and no hope of fixing the economy before the next election. Their only hope is to try to get the GOP in the cesspool with them. i.e. "the GOP caused the downgrade because they wouldn't increase the debt limit..." hoping that the public would blame the GOP equally for the ensuing budget chaos that a downgrade would cause.
Expect the Dems to create one mess after another to try to get the GOP just as muddy"

Just read some reports about the apparent deal in the senate. Essentially, things will continue as they were except the changes will be a dog-and-pony-show committee to look at deficit reduction and the commitment to vote on a BBA in both chambers. However, the outcome of the vote on the BBA does not affect the ability of the Obama administration or congress to get us in further debt. In other words they are throwing us a scrap and hoping we'll go for it.
If that is the plan that is approved in the senate, I hope the house rejects. Yes, I know that means we'll "default". I am beginning to believe that some major financial disaster is the only thing that is going to get people to wake up and ACCEPT WE ARE PHUCKING BROKE! AND THIS NONSENSE CAN NOT CONTINUE!
