Yes, responsible people would pay bondholders first, entitlements & military next, and work their way down to leaving nonessential govt functions unfunded. But there was no confidence that Obama would do that. In fact, his public statements for the GOP not to call his bluff could be interpreted as a thinly veiled threat that he would, in fact, collapse the whole thing just to create a bigger crisis.

We should have called the bluff.
Instead we have yet another short term solution that does nothing to address the long term problem.
The "worst case" consequences have not been prevented, they have only been postponed for a short time.

My uncle Tom, who actually looks a bit like you, is every bit as much of an ornery curmudgeon as you are (he's got an autographed photo of W on his wall with bullet holes in it from his 1911). ::) ;D He has religiously saved a wad of Confederate cash inherited from my many times great grandparents. He also has a Confederate sabre, which is very nice, and very sharp. He's waiting till the day the South will rise again and our Yankee overlords will be dealt with. (A not uncommon sentiment among native Floridians). ;D

Hey! I proudly offer up impeached federal judge Alcee Hastings, and have done so since 1990! I worked in a Congressional campaign against him and lost. Who is this Corrine Brown? I am giving you an unapologetic liberal criminal who happens to be African American, which is all that saves him, because if he were white, he'd be out on his ass . Accept no substitutes !
Its just my district. Blacks, for whatever reason, don't seem to be willing to turn on corrupt leaders. They just circle the wagons and so this A-hole survives election after election. What amazes me is that he backed Hillary over BO in the primaries. In a black majority district you'd think this was the cardinal sin "He backed a blond white chick over a brother! F#ck him!". But apparently even that wasn't enough. I'm stuck with this guy until he's convicted or I move. >:(

Alcee is a disgrace. I don't want to be racist, but I do want to be honest. If this guy were white, he wouldn't be elected dog catcher. He needs to be gone, but that won't happen until blacks stop reflexively voting for the incumbent. I mean he supported Hillary! And still the black churches support him. What does a brother have to do to piss off the hood?

Corrine Brown is in the 3rd district here in N.E. Florida. Luckily, I'm in the 4th. She is a complete buffoon. But like Quaker mentioned, AAs will never turn on someone of their own race. I have seen it not just in politics but in other parts of society too. The exception to this is when that person aligns him/herself to "the man" and then they will cut them off at the knees.

There is no arguing about this one JC. I don't care if its the preacher who gets caught with ten bastard children, the athlete who's accused of a crime, or a Congressman with his hand in the cookie jar, AAs will support them come hell or high water just because they're black. Why I don't know, but I would bet my bottom dollar that they will in any given case. And like fullauto I've lived my whole life in the South, went to a black majority high school, and lived in DC. I know whereof I speak.

First off, don't worry about being disagreeable. That is what this forum is about. That and correcting my ignorance. ;)
I don't disagree with what you have said, only to expand on it. I suppose I should have chose my words more carefully. I was more asking than stating. What I was eluding to was that when race isn't an issue, it seems that blacks will turn on each other just as surely as they will all turn against whites.
Admittedly I do not have much experience with AA people. We don't see many in the cold climates. So I will defer to the experts on this one.

Given the choice of being a dirt poor farmer on a rocky hillside or becoming a Holy Warrior of Allah, I can see why a lot of fellows choose to join up.
If you've looked at their tactics and capabilities, you will have noticed they are not very effective fighters. Our SF members there to route the Taliban participated in a cavalry charge on a defensive position and casualties were zero among our guys and close to that or zero for the others....and this type of charge was a regular occurrence. They should have all been killed if the defenders had any type of skill with the AKs they carry.
They don't really want to wipe out the opposition...unless it is foreign...because then they would have to give up the glory and take up a plow.
