Russia plans $65bn tunnel to America
Russia has unveiled an ambitious plan to build the world’s longest tunnel under the Bering Strait as part of a transport corridor linking Europe and America via Siberia and Alaska.
The 64-mile (103km) tunnel would connect the far east of Russia with Alaska, opening up the prospect of the ultimate rail trip across three quarters of the globe from London to New York. The link would be twice as long as the Channel Tunnel connecting Britain and France.
The $65 billion (£33 billion) mega-project aims to transform trade links between Russia and its former Cold War enemies across some of the world’s most desolate terrain. It would create a high-speed railway line, energy links and a fibreoptic cable network.

I only see one problem with this. And anyone who has been to Alaska will back me up on this. You may be able to build a tunnel TO Alaska, but you are going to have to figure out how to get THROUGH Alaska. The reason that the cities and towns are build along the coast is because that is the only hospitable terrain in the state. Once you get 20-30 miles from the coast Alaska pretty much goes straight up for 15-20000 feet. This is why bush planes are still so vital to the state. They may be better off to just tunnel straight through till they get to the eastern side of the Rockies.

Damn! Sarah WILL be able to see Russia from her house! (sorry, couldn't resist) ;D. ;D ;D

"A lie told often enough becomes the truth."

Lets ignore the frequent earth quakes for now.
Based on Russia's proven track record of energy blackmail this is exactly the sort of dumb ass idea the Dems will love.
Don't drill our own oil, let Russia have us by the energy nuts just like they do Europe.
Going along with would be treason.
-
Besides, they will never do it for only $1 billion per mile. It will cost far more than that.

Uhhh.....The Smear campaign (aka calling a spade a spade)? You will note that Sarah herself is right there during that video clapping and cheering, so if she is cool with it you ought to be as well.

Nice insult. Zero point. Care to try again? Because that was just sad, at least try to come up with an argument. ::)

Not even going to bother.

It's just more of FQ liberal sexist bigotry.
There is not a female politician in the country that he says anything good about.
What I can't figure out is how he connects a former Alaska Go. to a thread about something the Russians have been thinking about.

The smear campaign is as close to calling a spade a spade as repeating a misquote has to honest arguments.
Sarah was clapping and laughing at a comic routine. I'll be glad to interpreter any "quotes" from that performance as comic routines themselves and laugh at the performance as well

Before we get too far from the OP, would some of the anti-FQ brain trust out there explain the me where Russia will come up with 65 billion to do this tunnel? I am under the impression that Russia has not recovered their economy enough to attempt something like this. Perhaps they will become another debtor to China? That should make BHO feel a lot better.
Pecos, just askin'.

Have you been watching AK sales the last few years? ;D Between that and vodka, Russia should be rolling in it.

Yeah I've been watching AK sales but most of those are coming from the "Eastern Bloc" counties. My post was a long way to get a jab at who we owe money to.

GazProm, the state energy monopoly, is supposed to be the biggest single energy provider in the world. Their pipelines run from the Afghan border to the far North, and from Siberia to Scotland.
They are the primary supplier of fuel to the entire former Soviet Union and Western Europe.
They are up to their azz in cash.
-
Maybe this is why they are looking at a tunnel to AK, they can just drive the loaded crude filled trucks back to Russia.

FTA: "Moscow — Russia’s state-owned Rosneft teamed up with U.S. company ExxonMobil on Tuesday to develop huge offshore oil fields in the Russian Arctic in return for access to resources in the Gulf of Mexico. Because Rosneft does not have its own technology for deep sea drilling, it was looking for partners to develop the offshore projects in the Arctic and other regions of Russia. A deal it was pursuing with Britain’s BP earlier this year, however, fell through. "

Build a tunnel through the most geologically active (earthquake, volcanic, RING OF FIRE) region on the planet. Yeah that sounds like a gubmit project. I'm sure the US will want to throw some cash in too. Think we could float a loan?

Who would want to go either way? Bill T.

That pretty much nails it.
Both places are composed of miles and miles of miles and miles.
It's not exactly a high volume route. ;D
