Title: Do NOT Mess With Florida Highway Patrol,..Even If You Are A Cop. Dash Cam
Post by: twyacht on October 29, 2011, 06:09:37 PM
Well, I learned my lesson regarding FHP growing up down here. They do not play. If you are even in a fully marked Miami City Police Car, doing 120mph, your gonna get pulled over....cuffed and stuffed.

DASH CAM AT LINK,...

http://www.wsvn.com/news/articles/local/21005761540664/

Seems the uniformed city cop was in his patrol car, in uniform, off-duty, going to his moonlighting job, running late.....

The female Trooper has no humor and pulls him out at gunpoint.. :o

The FHP OWN the Turnpike...that reminds me...

 ;D

It appears FQ is right about Fla.

Do I understand that off duty Miami City officers are allowed to use their patrol cars to drive to off duty jobs? If so what does that cost the City? Must be nice to be able to do that.

Comments, FQ?

Even a pending FQ reply, I can vouch that City/County LEO's are given the option to drive their squad cars home, and subsequently to any other "off-duty" job,..great to be in a union,....plus free gas...
Many Cops nationwide do moonlighting.
Church traffic.
Funerals
Escorts
Security

But I can't tell you the number of times, a city cop will turn on his lights, go through a red light, than turn the lights off...

Perks of the job,....But 120mph on the Turnpike,....???? Bad Idea.... FHP will nab your ass...They don't care if your the mayor, FBI, local LEO, City Commissioner, State Rep. etc,...

You are not in Code 3 (lights & siren),....and driving like a madman?  You go down, courtesy of FHP. They had some super tweaked out Mustang 5.0 LX's back in the day...They got tired of being out run.....(before helicopters),...they got the Winston Cup additions, and were on Sawgrass Expressway, clocking 175 mph...back in the day.

I wouldn't doubt those Crown Vic's (with the Police Interceptor Emblem) get 150mph no problem.(and now they have helicopters),...

There are a lot of depts that have "take home cars."  The depts have enough vehicles to issue them like weapons.  The theory is that the cars would just be sitting in a lot whe the officer was off duty, but if they took them home they'd have a "presence" in the neighborhood.  Plus the officer can be available for service if need be.  Plus the officer is usually responsible for day to day maintenance and is better in tune with the condition of the vehicle than one checked out one shift then given to someone else.
A lot of those "off-duty jobs" are sanctioned by the dept.  Things like mall security or similar.  Paul Blart is augmented by real cops in uniform but on the mall's dime instead of the city.

As for the lights through the lights, Twyacht, around here you will get suspended for that, not that it doesn't happen.  Tend to get reported by other cops or fire/ems but John Q Public too.   Sucks to have your car number with your name on it.

Did anyone notice she drew her weapon as she approached the vehicle?

Well you can bet there will be some retaliation for this. His friends will kindly repay the favor to her and her family.

The FHP has been in several pissing matches with local police depts around FL over the years. This is really nothing new.

Have a buddy that pulled over a NY State Trooper,Guy ID'd himself and my buddy made a smart ass comment about him driving so fast thru his town.State Cop looks at him and said "I don't have to drive through your town, But you have to drive through MY state",Meaning That if he got a ticket, there WOULD be retaliation. He got off with a warning. ::)

Must be cntract time. FHP historically has been less than large departments like Miami Dade. There is some resentment. ;)

Most cops moonlight, they have to, I have no objection. At my real job I brought a company truck home but was told if I used it for personal business (transport to a second job, to the grocery store etc.) I would have to claim it on my taxes as income. I don't know how true that is 'cause I never had it come up. I wouldn't have used it anyway. That's why the comment.

120 on the freeway is a joke and he deserves to be busted. That got two young girls killed near me a couple years ago when a trooper lost his patrol car at that speed.

This story actually made the local paper up here in Orgeon.  Listening to the exchange on the video it really makes a normal citizen question how much fueding goes on between departments.  Don't get me wrong the idiot deserved what he got but I think the level of professionalism wasn't were it should be-was it really necessary to pull him out at gun point?

120 on the highway with no lights and siren has to raise the question "Is this a real cop being stupid or some a hole that stole a cruiser ?"

Not saying the Trooper isn't going to catch a little heat but think about the situaltion a little bit:
Unknown vehicle going 120, not responding to directions to pull over
Is the driver really a cop or a joy riding pot-head?
Can't raise the other car on the radio.
Once the cars are stopped she couldn't see that he was in uniform until she got much closer, close enough to get blasted by said pot-head.  Even then she's now faced with somebody she can reasonably believe IS armed but may not be in their right mind.
I'd have a weapon out too.

Notice the pistol was holstered as soon as the other officer started to comply.

Good point, it had crossed my mind that it could have been a stolen cop car from her perspective but how often does that happen?  If a BA stole a cop car it would only make sense to go flying down the interstate at 120mph.  ;D

It happens more than you think.  Usually its a couple kids out for a quick run around the block and then dumped.  Some are REALLY bad mofos that kill the officer to steal it.

I know that it has happened at least once up here, Cop went in the house to talk to some one, since it was winter, and a very short visit, he left his car running , when he came out it was a couple miles away.
I thought it was funny when I read it, but the guy got a couple years.

Don't know about cop cars but in one of the towns around Boston a few years ago, a dude was walking to the liquor store in a blizzard.  He ran across a running city plow, hopped in and plowed himself to the packy.  They arrested him on his way out of the store with a case of beer and a bottle or two.  He was gonna pull a u-turn and plow his way back home!

When opportunity knocks, sometimes ya gotta answer...

Years ago the drivers for Brink's used to leave their truck running and the door open when they took money into the banks in Rochester NH.
That ended badly and they never caught the person.

Precisely the reason I always carried a key to the door of the squad car with me.  Leave it running, but lock it.  And anytime the car was outside my physical control it was locked.  I had this paranoia about getting killed with my own shotgun or carbine,.

I'd rather be killed with my own shotgun.
It would save me from having to explain why I had to finish my shift in a Taxi  ;D

At $4.75/hour I don't think that crossed their minds.

having guns stolen from cars happens alot more then gets reported.  I know a FBI agent that had his mp5 stolen out of his crown vic, in the local FBI buildings parking lot.( only reason he was not fired)

If it was a pothead, top speed would have been around 45MPH.  ;)
