As of this morning he's out. So far the evidence points to the fact he knew of an eyewitness account of this pervert, along with his actions since 2002.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/11/09/penn-states-joe-paterno-said-will-retire-at-end-season/
He reported it to the school "authorities", but did nothing else. If that is true he could be in more legal trouble. If he knew this was going on for the last 11 years with this guy, and never told the police, he could be open for a ton of law suits. Not to mention Penn State is going to be writing checks for a long time because of their lack of action with this guy.
While it's a sad way for a guy as successful as Paterno to end his career, one has to ask what the hell was he thinking? He knew it was going on for years, had a chance to stop it, but looked the other way while kids were being violated for years. These guys are all in Penn States inner circle, so it's ridiculous to think they didn't know about this guy, along with what he was doing. It isn't like the guy was embezzling money, or even shaving points. Sexually messing with young boys is about as bad as it gets. Paterno is 84 years old. I hope this doesn't kill him.

McQueary told Paterno about the incident the next day, and the coach notified Curley and Schultz, who in turn notified Penn State president Graham Spanier. Curley and Schultz have been charged with perjury and failure to report the incident to authorities, as required by state law.

They notified college buracrats? What about notifying the cops and the kid's family? This is just like the Catholic Chuch trying to keep the scandal in house at the expense of the victim. As far as I'm concerned, everyone who knew and kept silent should be crucified.

That is my point. If he, (Paterno) knew, which he obviously did, and knew for years, he is going to be in for a $h!t storm of the first magnitude, and deservedly so.

They deserve everything that's coming their way, all of them including Joe Pa!
This conspiracy is unconscionable!

Tell that to the 2,000+ students ready to riot over his firing. This should tell everyone the common sense that is all but non existent in today's young, "educated" crowd. What's the difference in this kind of lunacy, or that displayed by the "occupy" crowd? Idiots all.
-
For the most part Bill, I see little evidence that "young people" have a clue about anything! There are exceptions of course but the indoctrination is working!
-
How bad? Not bad enough. He should spend the rest of his days in prison for his part in it...
-

And the sad part is there are so many hard working parents who are sacrificing everything in their own lives to be able to send their kids to a school like this, so they can have the "education" that they themselves never had. What a total, anti productive WASTE!
-
2000+ were just looking for an excuse to break things.
All deserve to be in jail.
The main three for a long time.
-
Its not "young people", its the sports culture. Athletes can do little wrong, coaches (as long as they win) are worshipped like Gods and if they've been winning as long as Paterno not even shielding a child molester is bad enough to get some idiots to walk away. Here's exhibit A. When I was at UT we fired both our football and basketball coaches in the same year. Of course we couldn't just fire them, we had to "transfer" them to the head office at the better part of half a milion a year each, while we looked for their replacements. I caught holy hell for suggesting publically that that might be a waste of a million bucks, and we just ought to fire their asses. It got worse when I said you could fire me from any job on the planet if I got a million dollar severance package, and since when did the UT football program get taken over by pinko commies and union bosses? (hey, I was young and it was fun). ;D

Dude, perhaps you haven't been reading my posts. Rioting is part of the lab requirement for my classes. Although I do prefer it be for a halfway decent cause. This? its just sad.

It's both FQ.
Athletes are not the brightest bulbs in the rack but they keep the dollars flowing into the coffers of the monster schools like Penn State. Then, the not so bright student body idolizes these dim bulbs to mythical proportion.

I'm not doubting the mechanics of how and why this happens. What I have a hard time with is how these kids, who are supposedly receiving a "higher education", can't distinguish between the importance of one over the other. Any 7th grader should have that much decency and common sense.

I heard a comment from Jim Braude, a resident socialist douche bag here in the Northeast. He suggested that Penn State held back with the information until Paterno had the win record in the NCAA.

Remember Bill, these kids are from a generation who were informed by the President that a blow job wasn't really sex! Most may not have the decency, common sense and respect that us old guys were taught!

I don't follow sports so I haven't been paying much attention to this but after reading this thread I have a few thoughts.
1 Scholastic problems get reported to School officials, Criminal activity gets reported to Cops, it's why we pay them.
2 The Constitution guarantees the right of "peaceable assembly", rioters should be beaten or shot.

And that is where Paterno, Spanier and the rest of the management went bad! It took nearly 15 years for this to come to light, Paterno knew about it nearly 10 years ago!
-
If the Victim were 18+ I would have said, no big deal, consenting adults etc. etc.
But I went back and scanned the linked article and the only age I saw specified was 10.
In that case every one involved should go to prison, General population, see how they like getting corn holed.

Are college professors or coaches "mandatory reporters"? ??? I know that if I, as a foster parent, don't report something (not just my kids but ANY kids) that I would facing time. Same goes for any public school teacher.
I also know that the janitor should have grabbed the biggest wrench/shovel/broomhandle at his disposal and planted in in the coach's head when he caught him in the act.

That's a good question RW. And sadly its one that needs to asked. But here is a better answer. If you need a manadtory requirment to report the rape of a 10 year old (and raise holy hell until the bastard responsible is hanged), you have lost your right to call yourself a decent human being, and for that matter be treated with anything more than naked contempt by those around you.
FQ13 who doesn't mean to sound righteous, but rape, especially the rape of a child? There are some things where a man shouldn't need to be told what to do. I hope they hang everyone of them.

And yet, the Assistant coach that witnessed one rape is going to be on the field Saturday against Nebraska!
Shameful...

Personally, I think they should throw Penn State out of the Big Ten, sanction them and erase the records for the last ten years!
This isn't about doping or betting on your team! It's about one of the most heinous crimes that can be committed against a child!

This is what leads me to believe this guy is in for a really tough ride legally from here on in. Possibly from a criminal standpoint, for sure from a civil one. He'll spent the rest of his days marching up and down the courthouse steps, instead of the sidelines.

No question they lost the right to be called decent and maybe even human.
I am wondering purely from a legal perspective just how FUBAR Penn State should be. I am thinking the entire coaching staff, administration, and even the board should be seeing jail time.

Right now, the consensus seems to be that he did what he was legally bound to do; therefore, he's criminally innocent. It's the moral duties that he failed on. Things change, quickly, and there's likely to be a lot more to come out; so, we could still find out more of his role in this.
Civil court? I don't know. Apparently, you can get away with sueing anybody over just about anything these days. With something as bad as this, it's likely he'll end up in court at some point.

Any of those kids that were molested AFTER Paterno knew about it, but did not go to the police after he also knew the Penn State establishment basically did what amounts to nothing, has a civil suit against him. That borders on child endangerment. I'm not a lawyer, or pretend to know the laws of Pennsylvania, but people have been sued for a hell of a lot less. Looking the other way and not getting involved doesn't necessarily constitute a crime. But in this case you have an adult that did nothing for 11 years while child after child was routinely molested by this animal. Paterno will have to answer for that.

If some one I worked with was molesting kids, they better hope the cops get too them before I do.

I agree with Ann, shut the whole place down and then burn it just to be safe. Entire NCAA, too, if they were complicit.

I don't know a damn thing about her politics, but here I agree 100%. Two adults saw children being raped. Other adults were informed. Nothing was done. As far as I am concerned, that's grounds enough for a conviction.

NH law allows you to shoot some one you see committing rape right then and there, no threat to you required.
Hell, they would probably not say BOO if you did it from 500 yards with your deer rifle.
We do have some situations where "Cuz he needed it" is just as valid here as in Texas.

Wyoming is similar in it's self defense/ good Samaritan laws. Basically if you witness someone committing a violent felony against another person you are within the law to kill the BG.
And yes, I highlighted the word violent so our bleeding hearts couldn't overlook it.

Hearts and minds...two to the heart and one to the mind. The only question is whether to give them a few seconds to make peace with God or send them straight to hell...

I can't find anything wrong with anything she said, I agree - shut the whole damn school down. PA resident/taxpayers will be paying for this for years to come.

CA is the same, rape is seen as a deadly force deal... If he is lucky, I would not reload. ;)

I wonder if any thoughts about if it was legal would even enter my mind...and if they did, well, it might make me a hero in the lock up.

As far as the population in general, if you try to sugar coat child molestation with football, the outcome isn't going to be favorable.

Jerry Sandusky found guilty of child sex abuse, should spend rest of his life in prison
BELLEFONTE, Pa. – Jerry Sandusky was found guilty Friday night on 45 of 48 counts of child sexual molestation and faces up to 442 years in prison.
A jury of Sandusky's Centre County, Pa., neighbors determined that the former Penn State defensive coordinator sexually abused children over a 15-year period, using his stature as a local coaching hero and his position with the Second Mile charity to target and then violate at-risk kids from the area.
The jury deliberated for about 20 hours after a trial that stretched across eight days at Centre County Courthouse. The jury foreman read the counts and said "guilty" on six consecutive counts before saying "not guilty" for the first time. He read all 48 counts.
