Rather silly to me, but obviously very serious to the people on both sides.

I find the marching more "dancing" than tight, precision marching.

I wonder if they look upon our military's close order drills as dull and boring?

Funniest part is they've been doing it since 1959 but recently (2010) some a$$4at decided it was to harsh and called for the display "toned down."

PC runs rampant, even in the Third World

Although they appeared pretty serious, I'd bet that the guys assigned to that duty are a) proud of it, and b) think its pretty entertaining.

I've traveled a lot overseas and I have noticed that what seem silly to us is quite serious to others.  I also know that they see some of our customs as silly.  I think this was pretty elaborate even for India.  At least they close there boarders.

Pardon him...he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.

That is pretty freakin' intense...However,....it's better than the 38th Parallel ain't it?

Each culture/country has it's pride, honor, and traditions....Thankfully this "balance" has a handshake.

As far as the Brits? They are now moving legislation through Parliament, that will allow the .gov to have access to every citizen on the British Isle's email, web surfing habits, list of sites, and unencumbered access to your online life....

Gee...Coming to America, if it hasn't all ready....

I watched the video again and thought of something.  I'd bet the whole deal started with one guy, bored, goofing off showboating to the gate one day.  The next day the other side doesn't want to be shown up, mirrors it, add a few more days and bored border guards and a tradition is born.  Now it's "just what we've always done."

The announcer aid they had to start there.

So, how did the job interview go?

I watched it with the sound muted.

The interview will have to be continued next week.  They started me out with a bunch of tests.  We never got to the interview part.  I guess I passed the tests (personality profile stuff), she's going to call Monday to talk to me.  This isn't the job I really want, but I haven't heard from them yet.  Fingers crossed.

It may have started even earlier with tribal troops trying to out do the Brit Regulars.
Remember, while the mountain tribes, (Afghans )  may still be little more than bandits, the low land Indians have had highly developed, and disciplined military forces longer than England has.
Another thing to remember, the Hindu Indian's, and Muslim Paki's  hate each other , are at war in the Kashmir, and both developed nukes specifically for use on each other.

I think the High Stepping is both a warning of how deep political BS can get...and a demonstration of how to get through it.

Either that or it is a demonstration of how to kick a politician in the azz even when it's located on their shoulders
