Title: Red Jacket AR
Post by: gunman42782 on April 10, 2012, 06:03:11 PM
You know, I find this almost a joke.  If you ever watch the goofy show, Sons of Guns, do you remember the episdoe where they had so much trouble putting one of these together?  As a guy who has built a couple of ARs myself, there really not all that complicated, and here a supposed gunsmith couldn't put a piston driven AR together from a kit!  And now they are supposedly building brand new piston driven ARs.  With Mag-Pull furniture.  So, take a AR, put Mag-Pull stuff on it, take a piston kit, put it all together, and call it a Red Jacket rifle.  Really. ::)

Are they building their own receivers and/or bolt carriers, etc.?

They could be getting all of their components outsourced....but, behind the scenes they have 50 or so employees.  I tend to think without proof that they are building some basic parts and adding components like other manufacturers do.

Yeah, they sure put their best foot forward on that build...they should have let the guy with the tats do it.

It is a tv show produced to bring the drama, real or created, to our sets and get us to watch.  We have no idea what is really happening within the family, the shop or the business based on the show.

Behind the scenes at "Sons of Guns"

15 minutes ?
You built the whole freaking gun in 15 minutes ?
Dude, we have to fill 22 minutes of air time  !

                          ;D

I watched the first show and chucked it.

Wil, the big dude with tats, is actually (or was) an employee as is his daughter.  The other "employees" are actually the owners.  But for "TV" it's all been switched topsy turvey.

So bad.   For better or worse, I've noticed a lot of my non-gun friends like it though.

While actual "gun people" may think it is crap, anything that shows guns, shooters, or the gun industry in a favorable context to a public swamped with anti propaganda is a win for us.

But it doesn't do that!

I don't see anything that is really unfavorable in the show.  Dumb and overly contrived for TV?  Yes, but not really unfavorable.
They show eyes and ears ALWAYS, women shooting guns, do a lot of historical weapon stuff, builds for police, builds/shows for vets.
Some of it (a lot?) may be WAAYYY to overpriced to us, (like their AR) but the non-gunner public isn't going to get that.

kmitch, the think I dislike is that they are not really building anything new or with purpose.  They want an ar with ak reliability, so they put a piston system on an ar - I think those are already available over the shelf; they want a mini-gun, so they mount three ar's on a spinning platform; they are just going to the garage with minimal tools and adapting what we have to what we can buy.

At some point somebody with zero gun knowledge is going to realize the stupidity.  Just like last week on Ice Road Truckers when the tanker trailer rolled in the ditch.  Did you know that those tankers we see going down the road weigh 9,000 tons  ???  Or how about the gator hunters that are catching 800 pound gators and then two guys pick them up by the four legs and carry them across the swamp to the boat.

It is time that we not only rejoice in favorable gun attitude, but that we also insist on accuracy in facts.

I don't have cable anymore so I've not seen any of the last two seasons.  The first season had a lot of ridiculous plot lines that might give the non-enthusiast an improper image of what is expected of a responsible gun owner.  They rigged stuff to blow up, shot tracers over a wooded area from a BMG, made a silly three barreled AR, ect...  When the OC Choppers showed up one day I knew that was the last time I'd watch the show.  Those three morons shouldn't be given access to anything that goes bang!

A negative light is the way I perceived the show and I've owned and used firearms my entire life!  My wife thought it was absolutely ridiculous at it's core!

I'll take the OC, Versus or Spike TV's gun shows any day but Discovery is missing something!

This is my main beef with the show.  Granted, I know very little about gunsmithing, but those guys just seem to break out the welder and duct tape and build stuff that looks like it was on the Red Green Show.

But the over the counter one like Ruger wouldn't have that neat red jacket logo on it....for only $500 more!

I didn't say I liked the show. I think it's: "Dumb and overly contrived for TV?"
I just don't look at firing whatever you want, where you can when you have the fire dept standing by and exploding targets as a bad thing.
(the exploding targets are also for sale if you want to pay 50-100% more than anywhere else for the same thing)

About the RJF AR....Article from TTAG.

The NRA doesn’t like to share. So you’ll have to click here for a sneak peak at Red Jacket Firearms’ new AR. It’s The Mother of All Marketing Tie-Ins—excluding James Bond’s Walther PPK, Dirty Harry’s 44 Magnum and bunch of other TV and movie guns. Uh, anyway, the question must be asked: other than star power, what does this new piston-driven modern home sporting defense rifle bring to the AR game? No se. Will Hayden no say either. What could Will and his dog shit-scooping minions introduce to ARland these days? I’m certainly not buying that shotgun/rifle hybrid Red Jacket thingie. No suh. About the only way cool thing I’ve seen recently AR-wise: SureFire’s new canted rapid transition sights for Three Gun competitions. Still, you know we’ll be watching . . .

They are also very pricey...

Here's another interesting video, and commentary....about RJF... Vid at link.

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/04/robert-farago/red-jacket-firearms-safety-sucks/

TTAG commentator Freddie Serna posted this underneath SHOT Show Snaps: Red Jacket Firearms and R. Lee Ermey. We’ve lifted it from that post and republished it here with Mr. Serna’s permission.

“You can do what I did to show how irresponsible and dangerous Red Jacket Firearms and the Discovery Channel are. I introduced the Sons of Guns episode “Blanks Prank” [above] to our executive officers and safety department. They were very impressed with the safety aspects that Will Hayden was conveying. They were so impressed that they do not plan on doing any business with Red Jacket Firearms. I work for the nuclear plant in Arizona and we have quite a large number of former military personnel as well as former police officers in our security department . . .

We also exchange information (good or bad) with the other nuclear plants in the U.S. and abroad. Generally INPO 1 plants set the standards for the other nuclear plants. What the best practiced plants do the others follow suit especially if it involves nuclear or industrial safety. Wall Street and insurance companies also look very closely on the involvement of companies when it involves safety. The companies stocks and insurance rates are dictated by how much a company gets involved with safety. OSHA also has their hands deep into everything when it comes to safety.

So if you work for a company that has any type of security department that uses or has plans to acquire AR15/M4 based weapons or any weapons for that matter introduce them to the Sons of Guns “Blanks Prank” video. A simple e-mail is all it takes. Most company execs will find it appalling and will not authorize any funds toward acquiring RJF products.

Does it matter to Will Hayden, Red Jacket Firearms or the Discovery Channel? IDK. I would guess that it probably doesn’t as long as they continue to have a big fan base. But you can only do what you can do.”
