Red Jacket AR
« on: April 10, 2012, 06:03:11 PM »
You know, I find this almost a joke.  If you ever watch the goofy show, Sons of Guns, do you remember the episdoe where they had so much trouble putting one of these together?  As a guy who has built a couple of ARs myself, there really not all that complicated, and here a supposed gunsmith couldn't put a piston driven AR together from a kit!  And now they are supposedly building brand new piston driven ARs.  With Mag-Pull furniture.  So, take a AR, put Mag-Pull stuff on it, take a piston kit, put it all together, and call it a Red Jacket rifle.  Really. ::)

Are they building their own receivers and/or bolt carriers, etc.?

They could be getting all of their components outsourced....but, behind the scenes they have 50 or so employees.  I tend to think without proof that they are building some basic parts and adding components like other manufacturers do.

Yeah, they sure put their best foot forward on that build...they should have let the guy with the tats do it.

It is a tv show produced to bring the drama, real or created, to our sets and get us to watch.  We have no idea what is really happening within the family, the shop or the business based on the show.

I watched the first show and chucked it.

Wil, the big dude with tats, is actually (or was) an employee as is his daughter.  The other "employees" are actually the owners.  But for "TV" it's all been switched topsy turvey.

So bad.   For better or worse, I've noticed a lot of my non-gun friends like it though.

While actual "gun people" may think it is crap, anything that shows guns, shooters, or the gun industry in a favorable context to a public swamped with anti propaganda is a win for us.

But it doesn't do that!

I don't see anything that is really unfavorable in the show.  Dumb and overly contrived for TV?  Yes, but not really unfavorable.
They show eyes and ears ALWAYS, women shooting guns, do a lot of historical weapon stuff, builds for police, builds/shows for vets.
Some of it (a lot?) may be WAAYYY to overpriced to us, (like their AR) but the non-gunner public isn't going to get that.

You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.

kmitch, the think I dislike is that they are not really building anything new or with purpose.  They want an ar with ak reliability, so they put a piston system on an ar - I think those are already available over the shelf; they want a mini-gun, so they mount three ar's on a spinning platform; they are just going to the garage with minimal tools and adapting what we have to what we can buy.

At some point somebody with zero gun knowledge is going to realize the stupidity.  Just like last week on Ice Road Truckers when the tanker trailer rolled in the ditch.  Did you know that those tankers we see going down the road weigh 9,000 tons  ???  Or how about the gator hunters that are catching 800 pound gators and then two guys pick them up by the four legs and carry them across the swamp to the boat.

It is time that we not only rejoice in favorable gun attitude, but that we also insist on accuracy in facts.

I don't have cable anymore so I've not seen any of the last two seasons.  The first season had a lot of ridiculous plot lines that might give the non-enthusiast an improper image of what is expected of a responsible gun owner.  They rigged stuff to blow up, shot tracers over a wooded area from a BMG, made a silly three barreled AR, ect...  When the OC Choppers showed up one day I knew that was the last time I'd watch the show.  Those three morons shouldn't be given access to anything that goes bang!

A negative light is the way I perceived the show and I've owned and used firearms my entire life!  My wife thought it was absolutely ridiculous at it's core!

I'll take the OC, Versus or Spike TV's gun shows any day but Discovery is missing something!
