Since very early on I have been a part of DRTV Forum and I enjoy it and appreciate it. I've looked at a few other forums, but never joined any. Recently however, I joined a NJ gun forum. I thought it would be good "local source" stuff, and it IS. It's got some state news and topics that concern those of us who are in a state with tons of ambiguous rules that are difficult to understand but carry huge penalties if misinterpreted and broken.
I'm a Life member of NRA - I don't always agree, but it's the biggest damn barking dog we've got, and you have to feed it. I joined NJ2A Association. They can't change things but they work on it, and they are very aggressive about attacking local jurisdictions that tack on extra requirements or take longer than legal to process all the BS we put up with here. It's all good.
Having said that, I try to contribute, but I mostly lurk. There seem to be cliques- it's inevitable I guess thinking about us at DRTV, and aside of a few obvious individuals who are well informed there's a lot of uninformed question and discussion and a LOT of tinfoil going around. I don't like to be judgemental, but there's just a WHOLE LOT of discussion that I really don't need to take part in.
The statewide WTS board is pretty interesting though.
Having said ALL that, my conclusion is that, with the exception of Billy Goat Gruff and the few trolls we suffer here, I consider this the cream of the cream. MB, the Marshalls, and the other contributors have set a site with a high bar for discourse. Yeah, we enjoy our "fun bags" and our Barry bashing and the occasional tin foil rant, but the advice here is good, the attitude is stellar, and I have a family here that I know I can turn to and that I care about.
Just thought I'd blurt out a little gay crap on a saturday night after expending myself at a gig. Leaves me a little vulnerable sometimes, it does.
No, really. The point is...this is the coolest place I've ever found to talk guns and I love the fact that I can dial up any of the principals and tell them what-for or tell them I appreciate them. I have a lot of friends and some brothers here. It's simply the best.

Yep.

Well said Jay!
This is where I hang my hat as they say!

I once shot and filmed a match in St. George, Utah. My hotel room was right next to enough sodium vapor lights to illuminate Yankee Stadium, and the curtains were made of a particularly ugly shade of pink tissue paper. After tossing and turning for a couple of hours in a room bright enought to read in, I got up, found the only open late convenience store in St. George, and bought two boxes of aluminum foil, roaster strength, and a big roll of duct tape. I went back to the room and methodically covered every window with aluminum foil and duct tape. I also aluminum foiled and duct taped all the pilot lights, the clocks on the microwave and, for the heck of it, the clock radio. With the aluminum foil I had left I made an aluminum foil hat with 2 pointy antennae and a duct tape chin strap. When I left to shoot the match in the morning, I left all the aluminum foil in place and the hat on the middle of the bed.
I not only got extra towels, but the staff watched for me in the afternoon and raced out to carry my gun cases upstairs. They were very solicitous and asked repeatedly if I'd heard anything.
I do admit to twitching a bit...maybe a little drool...just to please the audience!

I'm not sure we need to know that, Michael.

I just wanted to confess to that aluminum foil hat!

Damn you, Michael Bane! Now I have the SNL (from back when it was actually funny) drool bucket skit with Michael Palin stuck in my head and I can't find the video! If someone with really strong Google-Fu skills wants to invest the time to find it I think it would be most educational.
-
Michael, I hope you know that the 'antenna' on aluminum hats don't add any special effect.
It does sound like the naive hotel staff might have been fooled by them, so they did do something this time.
I have stopped using them after I found out they were infective and and just a waste of good tin foil.
Just thought you might want to know
-
Solus, you are correct. The only purpose of a tin foil hat is to keep your thoughts from being read by aliens/government/bigfoot/etc. :o

Considering some of some of my posts there no point in using the tin foil.
Every one can pretty much figure my opinion on a given subject.

Go ahead and wear it anyway, the little tin antennas would look so cute ;D ;D

At least someone gets it!! The rest will never learn.....you always see the hats with those antennas...even on cats.

Heck with the tin foil...I've moved to an aluminum strainer! Can't wear anything over it to hide it but the neighbor kids originally thought I was a Russian spy now they think I'm KRAZY!!!! LOL.
Richard
PS: Seriously, I had another neighbor tell me the RS thing.

That sounds like a story worth hearing comrade . ;D

Not really. Had a dark beard and mustache when I moved in and kept to myself more or less. Other than that, I have no clue...

Too funny Jay, I did the same thing about three weeks ago and have found much the same type of "tinfoil" consumption. I joined NWFirearms because as I finish my degree I hope to have time to pursue more local competitive shooting events, like the Crimson Trace night shoot just over the mountains last month.
The people seem to run the jamut from normal 2A guys to commercial consumers of foil with some wach-a-doodles thrown in for good measure.
As for the cream of the crop, I agree DRTV is where it is and that is why I settled here after trolling countless other gun forums. Now where is that beer-toasting emoticon? ;D
-
Mmmmmm...toasted beer.

I applaud your technical correctness, kind sir!!!! ;D
* Background to that is: I worked in the Aluminum industry for a good number of years, and the old guy that owned the company was adamant (to the point of almost firing a supervisor in front of me) about calling it aluminum foil....... He would scowl and bark, "There ain't no damn tin in it!!"
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Lead foil is better at blocking the aliens trying to read your brain waves.

Well, sure it is...but then you have to remember to wash your hands in the middle of an invasion....
