Well, I did it........ :D :D :D
After 20 years of off-again/on-again looking, wanting, and never being in the right place at the right time...... I finally purchased an AR (two, actually).
For years, I could find rifles, but didn't have the spare funds...... and then when I had funds, the prices were ridiculous. I was seriously looking back in 2008 and BHO got elected and the price doubled practically over night and I've been waiting on the iron to get hot again so I could strike. I doubt I'll ever find a new one for the price I paid again.....especially if Der Leader gets re-appointed to the throne.
Anyhooo......
I got a DPMS flat-top, with the M-4 style stock and 16" barrel, and two 30 round mags....... it is a very basic model, but that is what I wanted so I could add/change things as I can afford. The tag price was $700 +tax, but because we (my son and I) bought two, they sold them to us for $650 flat, out the door....... which is about $100 (pre-tax) cheaper than anywhere else I've looked.
I hated to come off the money since I am preparing to have a new roof installed.... (but that is what the bank is for, I guess ;D ) but that was just too good a price to pass up.
Now I need to scope it to see what it'll do.

Nice. Congrats!
-
You got a great deal! Enjoy them. It's a whole new world of shooting.

Alright. Congratulations. Now let the fun begin.
Of course you do know that now you need a n A2 National Match configuration one as well ... right?
-
What Alf said !
Of course that means a red dot for the carbine and a scope for the NM. ;D
-
You'll need them when the armed Social Security "Officials" come and kick in your door to "adjust" your "senior attitude problem",.....
;)
Congrats Peg,....Right place, right time.....
ammo and mag up,..... ::)

ammo and mag up,..... ::)
Yep.
On the way home my son looked over with a straight face and said, "We just bought a couple of real ammo-burners didn't we?" ;D
I just said, "Yep."
I have a small stockpile of decent ammo, but scope, irons, and mags are in order.
*EDIT*
My boy just capped a mag-full out back for giggles. ;D ;D
-
Congrats on the guns AND being able to blow a mag out the back door! That's ALL good.
-
Very nice Peg! 8)
Give us an update on the scope you decide on and a range report is a must.
Enjoy!
-
Thanks all.
I have a couple of scopes I can try just for initial plinking and get it up and running.... until I can get a dedicated set up.
The place I bought these at has Eotechs for under $400 (will have to compare and see if that is a good deal) and some Millets, Bushnell, and Redfields for decent prices. Maybe at Christmas I can swing a scope that is fitting for 200 yard and under target/plinking/home defense.
Congrats on the guns AND being able to blow a mag out the back door! That's ALL good.
Yep..... another good thing about being rural..... ;D
My son said, "I gotta shoot mine.......:
I replied, "It ain't got sights yet."
He said, "Right now I don't need sights.... I just need to hear it go BANG!"
;D
Ahhh the impatience of youth........ ;)

Why not an AR 10 for you next AR?

Love to have one of those too. ;)
The best financial option for a .30 cal AR for me in the short future would be a .300 AAC Blackout. All I need is the barrel until an entire upper can be purchased.
-
You should sell it in australia they are going for 15k!
You could buy a few more and have plenty cash left for an ar10!
-
I do have some important questions about owning and operating an AR...........
Does this finally make me 'evil'??
Bad?
Unstable?
Tell me that at least I can be a full-fledged right-winger now........ ::)
;)
-
Yes Peg, you are now a "full fledged" right winger, it does not however make you bad, or evil.
Unstable, well, in your case it far predates the AR. ;D
-
don't know if the Flint River Club at Americus hosts 3 gun matches, but if you get to South River at Conyers/McDonough or Cherokee at Gainesville they probably can get you into a practical rifle or 3 gun match....
-
Peg, paint it pink or some other color and then it won't be an "EVIL" black rifle!
FWIW

Just look at it this way Peg,....your on "another" DHS/DOJ/NSA/FBI/CIA/ATF "watch" list,...... ::)

Well, I have several scope options from a collection I already have on hand....... (until I can scrape up the $$ for an EOTec, Trijicon, or such....and since we are having a new roof put on this week, that might be a while)...... but, none fit just right. The one that fit with tall rings, still wasn't tall enough for proper eye-to-scope alignment.....and the ones with larger objective lenses bottomed out on the hand-guard.
So..... I ordered these UTG medium and high picatinny risers through Amazon. The full length riser was $14 and the two small ones were $8 each. They are solidly made and look to be sturdy.
Now maybe I can do some real shootin' with the thing.
-
If you have a flat top:
I bought Warne Ulta-High Quick Detach rings for my Remmy (DPMS) 308 - Warne Part #A204LM.
No riser needed and the scope alignment rods lined up perfectly before and after lapping. The 3.5x10 Zeiss is dead nuts in line with my eye when I shoulder it.
Supposed to fit 56mm objectives. Mine's 44mm and I still have 1/2" clearance from the free float handguard.
-
Thanks for the info. My son may want these for his.
Ours are DPMS flat-tops.
I will note that one thing I like about the riser is it is open through it so I could possibly use an sight set as back-ups.

Which model did you buy? I have been over the river and through the woods trying to get back up irons for my sportical without breaking the bank. I'm curious as to what you're starting with.

I'm looking at these sights:

http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Flip-up-Tactical-Front-Complete/dp/B001WIUO1O/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_2
The rifle is basically the Oracle flat-top.....their standard M4/16" rifle.

Ok. Here's where things get screwy. You need to make sure that the front sight is designed to be mounted on the gas block, not for a rail mount. The gas block is lower, not on the same plain like a rail would be. gas blocks also get hot, so not all polymer sights will work. I'd do a bit of research before I bought. Granted its only $50, but that right there scares me. Mose good quality iron sights go for around $80 and up each, not $44 per pair. If the front sight isn't designed for the gas block it won't align. Also, get an idea of how much real estate the rear sight takes up on your rail. You need to leave enough room for a scope or optics. As I said, I've been over the river and through the woods on this stuff. Good luck. :P

These are supposed to be mil-spec and are made of aluminum.......if the gas block gets up to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit, I'll let it melt. ;D
And yes, I intend to make sure the heights will work. :)
I don't need them to be CFS/Pincus-proof.... I just need a set of back-up, occasional-use sights in case a scope fails.

Keep me posted Peg. Frankly, I just said to hell with it and bought some spare batteries for the eotech. ;D
If you find some cheap ones that work let me know. Also...Range Report young man.

We need the rain, but I wish it had held off a few more hours.
