West challenges results as Florida declares vote-tally over amid recounts and irregularities
Published November 12, 2012
FoxNews.com
Florida Republican Rep. Allen West continues to challenge election officials' tallies that show he has lost his re-election bid – amid wild ballot swings on Tuesday and a partial recount needed because of voting-machine problems.
The Tea Party-backed West demanded a recount after the swing of votes on election night, leading Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy by roughly 2,000 votes, then trailing by 2,400 votes about 35 minutes later.
Officials said Saturday a final tally in the state’s 18th Congressional District shows Murphy had won by enough votes to avoid a full recount. But they then agreed to a partial recount of early votes in St. Lucie County after acknowledging some votes had been counted twice. That recount resulted in a minor changes in the numbers, with West still behind.
West and his campaign, though, objected to just a partial recount of votes cast Nov.1-3, arguing the irregularity calls for a full audit.
“If people are that adamant about getting rid of me, that’s fine,” West told Fox News on Monday. “But don’t do it at the expense of the integrity of our electoral process. That’s what disturbs me the most.”
The West team is singling out County Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker and requesting a comparison of voter signatures from all polling places with the total ballots counted because the numbers do not appear to match.
Officials have “already stated they had a 141 percent voter turnout, which I think should cause everyone alarm,” West told Fox.
He also said Murphy officials were allowed to observe the Sunday recount, but West’s were not.
St. Lucie County Assistant Attorney Heather Young told NBC-WPTV that the recount was related to computer memory cards that record the ballots when fed through voting machines.
Officials said Saturday that West lost by 2,442 votes. The partial recount changed the final tally by several hundred votes. But officials have not changed the final but unofficial outcome and say the new tally is not enough for a full recall election.
However, Jeffrey Scott Shapiro, a volunteer lawyer for West's campaign, thinks a full recount of early votes would give the congressman the extra votes needed to trigger an automatic recount.
“We're close, very close,” said Shapiro, a member Democratic Sen. John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign team. “It would be irrational at this stage to concede without making sure that every single vote is counted and that the democratic process is preserved."
Officials also allowed for additional vote counting in Palm Beach County before issuing the tally Saturday.
West's only option now appears to be through the courts.
West, 51, is one of only two black Republicans in the House. He had a constant string of headline-grabbing statements, from calling a majority of congressional Democrats communists to saying President Obama, Rep. Nancy Pelosi and others should "get the hell out of the United States."
Murphy, 29, was a political newcomer who portrayed West as an extremist who has done little else in Washington than stoke partisan fires.
Fox News' Eric Shawn and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

West is a carpet bagging A-hole who pulled a Hillary and beat a good GOP candidate in a district he's never lived in. As to the 140% thing? Our ballots, depending on which county you lived in, were either two or three pages long due to a number of ammendments. So, if you voted on the ammendments (lots of folks didn't as they were long and confusingly worded), you submitted two ballots, hence the discrepency. No shenenigans, just sour grapes. And ask yourself this. West's district went across three counties. He won in one and lost in two. He claimed fraud and corruption in the two where he lost, and yet didn't ask for a recount in the one where he won. Umm.........Gee, must be lucky there was one honest one hmm? And for the record, the GOP front runner before West swooped in with a $20 million out of state funded war chest endorsed the Dem.. Folks down South don't like carpet baggers. This race wasn't about ideology. It was about personality, lies, and showing disrespect to the locals. That isn't a winning combination anywhere.

If you seriously do not support Allen West you are truly not on the right side, he is a real American Patriot working for the right things. And any person that casts a vote based on personality is a total American Idol TV moron. True honest Constitutional principles trump personality every time; if We the People vote on personality alone we have not only lost the Republic but our soul as well.
-
JP1, FQ's total ignorance of real world politics is because he has a Phd in history and Poli/Sci.
He has all kinds of theoretical crap but no concept of practical application.
-
O.K. makes sense now.

One of our biggest problems is that our colleges are more about Indoctrination instead of education, what is truly scary is that is exactly how Hitler did it.

He's a "real American Patriot" who lied in his adds. He claimed that the Dem had voted for Bo's legislative agenda. News flash, the guy never held elective office. How could he have voted for anything? If you lie to me in a job interview how stupid would I have to be to give you the job? You've just proved you'll lie to my face.
West moved from his district to ours because he wouldn't be reelcted in his own, so he decided he'd swoop in with millions donated by out of staters and unseat a homeboy because he doesn't care which district he's in as long as he gets to be a Congressman. Never mind the fact he's never lived here, doesn't know our issues, never was involved with our community and was too damn cheap to pay for his own tickets to the NRA dinner, but insisted they be comped. He just just wants to pursue his own agenda and we were the means to do it. That's a slap in the face bro. Don't pretend its not. Screw the national parties. My local representative should by God be local. And Tom, that ain't academia speaking, thats Southern redneck pride. Two wholly different animals. You don't piss on a man's lawn and think you'll get his vote.
As to the Dem? He's a freshman rep in the minority party. His vote means jack and squat. He'll be beaten next election by a local GOP candidate unless he does a stellar job, in which case we all win. As it is, he won with a whole lot of GOP votes who were pissed off by West and he knows it. This includes the GOP front runner who West beat, and he took a whole lot of votes with him when he endorsed the Dem over issues of character as he put it. If the Dem acts accordingly, its good, if not, he's out of a job in 2014.

You know, one of the most annoying things about being back in "the land of my birth" is that same old stupid ass Southern Redneck Pride, BII GAWD.. Moron shit kickers...
And you're wrong about West.. If I'd have known he was there and what he was about, I'd have re-upped just to work for the man.. There hasn't been a man in Washington in my lifetime with that kind of (actual, real deal) integrity..
Go burn up a set of mudders in front of the house.. It'll make you feel like a real man..
And by the way.. What "Proud Redneck" doesn't piss in the yard?.. We civilized now or something? Please..

Here's the deal Santa. I live in his (well, my district, not really his) district. You don't. On paper he sounds good, pro-2A, pro-military etc.. He got busted for threatening to shoot a Haji, what's not to love right?
Here's the problem. He lied, repeatedly in his adds, not exaggerations, just BS. And then there's the fact he moved 70 miles north to run in our district rather than his own because he knew he would lose. Was it because he cared about us and wanted to represent the local issues a Congressman should be concerned about, or just because he wanted to be in Congress and didn't give a rat's ass who he "represented" as long as he was in Washington? I think the answer is pretty clear.
The whole point of the House of Representatives (emphasis on the word representative) is that they carry the concerns of their communities to the national government. Its kind of hard to do that if you've never lived there a day in your life. You may like his ideology, and frankly, I do do too. What I don't like are the lies and the sheer arrogance of an outsider swooping in to buy the votes of a district he'd never lived in. We had a perfectly good GOP candidate who would have won this race. He served this district for 30 years, he'd have won in a landslide. But guys like you who like to think that ideology and rhetoric trump local concerns were swayed by West's money and chutzpa. The guy is the GOP's answer to Hillary. Any New Yorker that voted for her should be ashamed, and the same is true for West voters here. If you don't live in a district, how the frak are you going to claim to represent them in Congress? I'm not voting for President here, I'm voting for representative, and the only person Allen West represents is Allen West.

FQ, need good references to the lies he told. Should be other than the Dem's campaign ads.
I agree that is would not be a Good Thing for an outsider to move in and take the turf of an equally good and incumbent candidate.
Though the other candidate would have to be very good to compete with West. Who was it?

The lies were in his adds, saying the Dem had voted for all the scary stuff BO has supposedly, or actually done. Cutting medicare etc. The guy never held elective office, he couldn't have voted for that stuff if he wanted to.
As to the GOP candidate it was Martin County Sherrif Robert Crowder, a good guy who's served his district in various capacities for thirty years. He just got drowned by West's money and ability to get not just local, but national media attention, which isn't something a local primary contender can compete with. As I said, it was like running against Hillary in the NY senatorial primary. Good luck. The funny thing is, the guy would have won as he was a perfect fit for the district. The Dem didn't get get people voting for him as much as he got people voting against West. Crowder wouldn't have had that problem. The only good news in this is the Dem had to run to the right to win, and knows that if he wants to keep his seat he'll need to keep those GOP votes and the only way to do that is to be very attentive to local issues and distance himself from Pelosi. Hopefully he'll do that.
-
FQ, sorry if it seems I'm holding your feet to the fire on this, but I've had a lot of respect for West and want to be sure of the truth before I re-evaluate my thoughts on him.
The particular point isl lying in the ads. It will come down to the words used. For example you said West ads stated Murphy voted for all the scary Obama stuff. Could the ads instead have said that Murphy supported that stuff? That can be done without holding office and Murphy's web site does show support for at least Obamacare.

Hold on just a second here...YOU MEAN A POLITICIAN EXAGGERATED IN A CAMPAIGN AD?
Say it ain't so...
-
FQ, you live in your district and have the right to choose your own representative. Suggest you not move to MD's 8th District where my right to select a Republican was removed through gerrymandering into a Democrat controlled district. In fact, the Republican who remained in my old 6th District also lost due to the same gerrymandering. Further, I'd prefer you stay where you are for my peace of mind. Someone once said you have to think beyond your own back yard. Honesty in politics...really?

Thing is, this is a gerrymandered GOP district. Here's what happened. About 20 years back the GOP and the NAACP made a deal with the devil. The idea was to create Minority Majority districts to give blacks more representation in Congress. The GOP loved this, as as a side effect, it broke competative mixed race districts and created lilly white ones who were likely to vote GOP right along side mostly black ones who would always go DEm. Demoghraphics being what they are the GOP got a net gain, but the blacks didn't care as this was about affirmative action and getting black faces in Congress. The real losers were white conservatives who got stuck in the Dem districts and have no chance in hell of getting their voices heard.
Its why in this case I don't worry about a Dem getting the nod. His vote is meaningles in the current House and unless he proves himself a rockstar any half decent LOCAL Republican will win the next election. And yeah, a vote for the House should be about local concerns being represented on the Hill. Things like immigration, education, flood control, trade with the Carribean, FEMA, Everglades restoration, fisheries policies and all the stuff that guys like you who just look at the "big picture" overlook, but that matter a hell of a lot to people's lives and livliehoods here at home. And since the feds, for good or ill, are hip deep in this stuff, damn straight I want my rep to be accutely aware of these concerns as a result of actually living here, rather than just being visiting nobility.

FQ drinks the kool ade .
Who's kool aide? I voted straight GOP with two execptions, Murray was one of them.

FQ hates Palin, hates Ann Coulter, hates Rush, hates West.....
Just one question FQ, you say West screwed "As to the GOP candidate it was Martin County Sherrif Robert Crowder, a good guy who's served his district in various capacities for thirty years."
But in the line just before that, (and in all your other posts) you claim he never held elective office .
I know up here Sheriff is an elective office.
Another thing you got wrong was saying West only wanted a recount of the counties where he lost.
Now you're the liar, West has been in court for a total recount, it was the judge who decided on the partial recount.
http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/allen-west-loses-recount/2012/11/12/id/463744?s=al&promo_code=10AEC-1
The state ordered county elections officials to recount ballots from machines which had memory card problems on election day, according to St. Lucie County Assistant Attorney Heather Young.
Last Wednesday, less than 24 hours after polls closed, the campaign filed for ballots and voting machines to be held untouched as they filed legal motions to force a full recount. Edson wanted all early voting ballots to be recounted, however the county only reviewed ballots from three of the eight days that votes were cast before election day.
>>>>>>>>>>>>WHOLE ARTICLE AT LINK<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
The fact that your "facts" aren't so factual doesn't surprise me.
You keep saying West lied in his ads ?
Lets have some specifics and see how you screwed that up too.
-
Uhh, Dude, Crowder was the GOP candidate West beat in primary. The Democrat was the one who never held office.Try reading before venting. As for the recounts, you are again wrong. Recounts are done by county. He wants one in Palm Beach and one in St. Lucie. He has not requested one in Martin County. The issue of total or partial was whether absentee and some other allegedly problematic early ballots would be recounted or all ballots would be recounted, but only in those two counties. Get your facts straight.
And for the record, I don't hate Rush, he amuses me. I've listened to him for years, hell, I even watched his TV show when he had one. I don't even hate Palin, I just don't think she was fit to be a heartbeat away from the presidency (though the same could be said for Biden). Coulter, yeah, on that one I plead guilty, she is a nasty harpy.
-
FQ, I recall when he made the decision to move to that district. After he was redrawn, he would have been in a primary with a guy that he knew would win the seat, and wanted to go where he could win a seat for the GOP. In summary, that was what he said.
I also watched one debate between West and the other guy where he was accused of exactly what you are accusing him of. He refuted the claims and the moderator, who was calling balls and strikes. called it a clean hit. The Dem was playing Victim/Drama Queen, apparently hoping that somebody would feel sorry for the guy, (and he did get pretty pitiful at that point in the debate). Nobody bought it. He admitted it/stood corrected.. I think you might be consuming too much of your own product!
Oh, and by the way, I lived in Florida from 79 to 92. Your carrying on about carpetbaggers is more than a little amusing. You do know the difference between Yankees and Damn Yankees, don't you ??? ? I lived a number of years in Pasco County (and Pinellas, and Hillsborough) and the ONLY person I ever met in that time with a southern accent was a Sheriff Dept. Investigator, (and he wasn't happy with me).. I met three other folks "actually from Florida" when I was working at the Marriott in the Airport in Tampa. Till I moved to Alachua, then Levy Counties, I was the only southerner I knew down there, with the exception of one kid in school who was also from Alabama.. Please.. "Will the last person out of Michigan please turn out the light?" How many US Representatives do you have from Florida, who aren't "from Florida? A bunch of em.. I'm not buying the "You ain't frum here" bit.. Alabama, Maine, sure, but not Florida!!!
I thought Coulter was entertaining till a couple of years ago when she, and apparently Peggy Noonan got the same bad batch of Kool-Aid, and they both turned idiot.. I understand that Coulter is your neighbor too.. Better you than me.. ;) Don't you feel better about your District, now??
-
I knew there was a discussion that I wanted to comment on and forgot; santahog reminded me.
Except for geography, when did southern Florida get to become part of the South again?
-
Southern most State, north of the Mason-Dixon!!
-
Something else..
You (FQ) are telling me that each page of a ballot is considered legally a single ballot? How do you calculate turnout based on that? It's gotta match, somewhere..
That would mean the turn out in the District would be between 47% and 71%, for a two or three page ballot, assuming that you're right and 141% turnout isn't what it seems..
Is each page of a ballot considered a ballot there??
