From this article... http://cnsnews.com/blog/gregory-gwyn-williams-jr/city-give-us-your-guns-get-free-flu-shot-and-wegmans-gift-card
"Since the program began in 2002, "Goods for Guns" has collected approximately 2,200 guns. Last year 40 guns were collected by the police department. Deputy Chief McGinn said guns that are turned in are destroyed."
Actually, I'm all for this. People who freely turn in their guns in exchange for government goodies just proved they are too stupid to own them in the first place.
-
The value of the gift depends on the type of gun. For example, a long rifle earns a $25 gift certificate; handguns earn a $50 gift certificate, and a semiautomatic weapon, a $75 gift certificate.
Obviously written by an idiot!
Ruger 10/22: Long rifle + Semiautomatic weapon = $100
1911: Handgun + Semiautomatic weapon = $125
Wonder what would happen if I walked in the door with my AP4 and said "Let's negotiate" ;)

Well, there is that.....

Instead of destroying the weapons, perhaps they should hand them out free to poor people who can't afford to buy guns to defend themselves and their families. Better than handing them free cell phones and we pay the bill. Then we could see how many of these same guns will be turned in a second time for another Wegmans GC! I know, we could call this "Fast and Furious II" and it will have a better track record of tracking the guns.
-
I wonder how many muggers, rapists, bangers, etc turn in their guns to this program each year.
-
Sara Schastok, president and CEO of the Evanston Community Foundation says, "Of course, no one is under the illusion that people who intend harm as a way of life are necessarily going to turn in their guns."
Huh?
-
People stupid enough to go along with this deserve to be victimized.
In fact, I would go so far as to say the robber or rapist who does victimize one of these sheep is a better citizen than the self appointed victim since they at least comprehend the meaning of "Shall not be infringed".
-
Huh?
That quote reveals it all, in terms of who Worcester is really afraid of and who they want to disarm.
-
Huh?
Translation:
Criminals do not pay attention to this program, and it will have zero effect on any issue they are trying to correct.
-
They've done this for years and in some communities people were turning in real junk that didn't work anyway! Never changes anything... The funny thing, Wegmans is one of the most expensive grocery markets I've ever visited!
Worcester is a real toilet BTW and the home of Kahr Arms, Auto Ordnance, etc...

Didn't we have a thread about another "gun buy back" where a gun club had been saving their worn out and broken firearms to turn in at the next event?
And they used the proceeded to buy firearms for their Youth Shooting Program? (or other good cause)

Chicago of all places! Good for them...

I know they have done a gun buy back programs in Minneapolis from time-to-time. I know that they got mostly junk guns. People turned in stuff because they got rid of guns that had no value. I suppose there were some that turned in working guns but not many.
Minnesota has a law that the old Saturday night specials can't be re-sold in Minnesota. The law requires that guns sold in Minnesota must have a metal melting point over 1000 degrees. Almost all of the Saturday night specials had lower melting points. These guns come in all the time to the gun shop and we send them back home. Gunsmiths are not supposed to repair them. Many of the guns fit this category.

Get them off the street!!!....work to get them donated for the next 'buy back', then donate the case to a gun worthy cause.

I remember when they got the "Saturday night Specials" banned.
That was the buzz word used to promote the GCA 68.
The claim was that "Coloreds" got likkered up and shot each other with these cheap guns on Saturday nights.
If they could just get rid of these cheap hand guns then crime would disappear.
-
How are you supposed to know the melting point of different guns?
When we had a gun "buy back" I got rid of some junk @ $25 a pop.

And what's the melting point a Colt peace keeper made in the 19th century?

It doesn't matter!
Get them anywhere close to red, and they are non-functional. Once the springs are hot they are no good, and even if you replace them the gun won't last more than a shot or two.

Actually, if I were planning to shoot someone, doing it during a gun buyback would be the time. Do the crime, hand in the gun and its destroyed free of charge. No way they have the time and man power to record the serial numbers and run ballistics, plus its "no questions asked" so there's no ID required. You'd never have to worry about a police diver dredging it out of the river. And if if a cop comes to your door asking about a .45? "Well officer, I sold it to a midle aged white guy at the last gun show, I don't remember his name. Prove me wrong". ;D
