Title: Poll: Conceled Carry vs Open Carry
Post by: ericire12 on June 13, 2008, 08:44:46 AM
Since this has been a hotly debated subject over the past several days on this site, I thought we should see some hard numbers. Like I said earlier, I prefer concealed carry even when open carry is an option.

I voted concealed as that is the way I would most often carry but I would like the choice and I would on occasion open carry.

I put concealed carry cause no matter what in Washington State to carry your handgun in the car you have to have a CCW License. And since I am lazy and dont want to walk everywhere I chose concealed. I would love to open carry, but it is one of those things that have had dumb laws that surrond it so it makes it impossible.
Also concealed carry makes me almost feel safer cause if something goes down the bad gunperson would target me if he saw a handgun on my waist, but if I kept it hidden and pretended I was a sheep I could maybe get in postion to get a good shot off or protect the ones that I can with the perp no the wiser.

Sometimes "Less is More" The less they see, the more surprised they will be when they do see it Voted concealed.

Although, somedays when I go camping, hiking, or to the outdoor range (Nowhere'sville, NC), open carry would be great. It is "legal" here in NC, but has "strings" attached. Usually, I just wait until I get there and open carry all weekend. With a concealed back-up. 8)

I look at it as how I would mainly be armed.  Open is just TOO obvious and here (MD) isn't exactly a "gun friendly" state so most people would blow a gasket seeing a gun on anybody without a badge.  Sure if it was legal there would be relatively few occasions that open carry would be the way to go but not usually.

Here in NH open carry is not restricted, But I carry concealed because as other have said I see no reason to paint a target on my head. Also, by carrying cocealed ALL the time my pistol is ALWAYS in the same place and position.
Does anyone else remember the scene from the 2nd Indiana Jones movie when he's on the rope bridge and the guy with the sword comes at him, He goes for his pistol but it's not there. Emarrassing at best.

Concealed carry, even on the range. Practice like you play.
Mac.

Concealed carry for the same reason that I use a handicap parking mirror tag in my car instead of handicap plates, so as to not paint a bullseye on my back!!  And trust me, a back this frickin big would be hard to miss!!   ;)

I put concealed carry even though most of the times I have carried in the last few years have been open carry while hunting or in the woods just walking around.
IMO the threat level here is very low. So I don't bother to carry unless I am heading for the big city -- which I try very hard to avoid. My current concealed carry guns are a .38 S&W M36 square butt or a SIG P239 in .357 SIG. On occasion I have carried a .45 or my favorite S&W Combat Magnum (aka M19 later) concealed. But back in the days I did that either the bad guys or large cats were all around and the threat assessment justified the big boomers.
But I am considering a Ruger .380 or a 3AT purchase for carrying more often.

Open carry because as I have always said a armed society is a polite society.

Conceal is safer I think..as it does give you an advantage if something bad is going down.
But open is easier to carry for me and I can draw faster if my gun is on the outside..

Can I have it both ways?

I would prefer open carry to concealed, but that's not legal here. If people were used to seeing pistol packin Moms and Dads, then society as a whole would be completely different than what we have today (More personal responsibility maybe?). Odds are people would be more polite.

I carry both ways depending on the occasion. Concealed is safer for several reasons but I do like to flex my rights now and again.  8)

I would carry conceled as I do now...I like to have the element of surprise on my side, but I would not hold it against anyone who chose to carry openly.

Concealed.  I don't want any trouble, don't want to scare any sheeple, and I have nothing to prove to anyone.

Now this changes for things like Wild Bill Days down in Deadwood when I can strap on my Peacemaker, hunting, or I'm in my backyard.  Then I'll open carry/

I would prefer both. And then let the individual decide. I see good for each of them. Frankly, I just be happy to be able to have and carry my guns in a free manner...   you know a freedom.. in a free country...   ::)

What a NOVEL idea! ;D   Maybe we should bring that up to the various legislatures that keep attempting to control us.  ;)

I think it would depend on the situation and where you went. If I lived in a small town and alot of other people carried open, then I probably would too, but I live in a metropolitain area so 90% of the time you would carry concealed, not to draw attention. Then while riding a motorcycle, hunting, hiking, fishing, or at the range carry open.

But then the good thing about them both being legal in this senario is that if someone saw your gun while concealed you don't get in trouble for "brandishing a weapon".

I carry conceled.

It's funny to see even people at the gun range act suprized if your shirt pulls up a little and they see a holster and go "Oh your carrying? ", just think what it would be like at if JQ Public would react to open carry.

We had a case up in NH (where it is OK to carry open) where a person from my state (MASS, that says it all there) saw someone carrying and went running scared, called the police saying there was a mad man running around with a gun and things like that. Well the police came saw what was going on and defused the case it was over but not without a lot of head aches to the legal carrying person.

So I carry conceled.

The Seacoast area, Manchester and Nashua are the worst for that kind of thing, MOST of the rest of the State the dispatcher would ask " Yes, So what ?". But NH CCW is only $10 so why not skip the potential aggravation.

I voted for concealed, though I definitely think open should be allowed, even encouraged. The reason for my vote echos what others have said about the aggravation one would get from the police and the public.

I CCW.

ND state law is silent on open carry, but see the other posts I have done about the State Constitution. Since the law is silent, however, Fargo has passed an ordinance against open carry, and so far no one has challenged it. Predominance should invalidate the ordinance vs. the State Constitution I would think.

I open carried on my ranch, but CCW now that I'm in town.

Still not sure how I feel about this.  If more of us Open Carried in states where it is legal, and sacrificed a little aggrevation from those police who dont know the laws they are enforcing, then eventually the public, and john law would be aware of teh laws and the headaches would cease...

Ill be honest.. the only reason i never open carry is because a sub compact looks funny on the hip...

It's been said before but I'll say it again.... I'd rather have the bad guy assume I'm unarmed and have the advantage of surprise than having my weapon displayed upon my hip.

that said, I'd also enjoy being a 'gunslinger' and struttin' my stuff down Main Street.

Another thought about concealed versus open carry is convenience. Walking around with your gun belt on like Matt Dillon your pistol may be handy to get at, but it's in the way for everything else, it bangs against things you walk past, I have broken grips because the ax handle hit it while I was splitting kindling, and the gun belt interferes with getting in your pockets. Concealed carry on the other hand puts the pistol in a more protected area inside the waist band or at least much higher on your normal belt or under an arm in a shoulder holster which locations not only make carrying more convenient they protect your investment of several hundred dollars from the battering of day to day life.

I prefer to carry for all the reasons mentioned. Why give the BGs a heads up?

My wife's family does have a large ranch in the Texas Hill Country. When on their private property, I strap a holster on my hip and open carry. It will only be seen by family and makes for a faster draw. Lot's of rattlers.
