Title: Hunting Season 2008
Post by: ericire12 on August 25, 2008, 09:15:56 PM
Well, hunting season essentially has arrived (depending on where you live), and I thought I would start a thread so that everyone can share their stories and photos for the year.
I went on Saturday and got my 7-Mag sited in and am planning on doing my first deer hunt of the season this Wednesday ...... Yeah, I can hardly wait!

Let the fun begin ;D

Small Game opens September 15 for me. I've had my license since April. The rule book always comes out several months after I buy my license that's good for varmints all year. I have to guess for 1/3 of a year what's legal and what's not, and try not to get arrested. ??? There are three different zones in Michigan, each with different game, different seasons, different bag limits, and even different weapons allowed. The regular firearm deer season starts November 15 if it's like the past several decades.

I think squirrels are legal at the end of August here in GA. I always clean out some of the excess from my yard with my Weihrauch HW77 air rifle in .22. With the 15x scope it's not really fair, but then they've had all summer to frolic and play in my yard. Eat my bird seed and tear up things on my back porch.

I 2nd the Dove Season anxiousness! This not being able to hunt in the summer thing drives me crazy.
I did use one of those worthless SR9s to harvest a "trophy"...a 18" American Bullfrog from about 10 yards.

You got any 'Piney-wood rooters' up your way? I love to hunt wild hogs...and we got a plenty down here on this end of the state. Last year I could sit on my pool deck in the back yard and watch them in the neighbor's field. My A-Bolt in .308 at about 200 yds worked wonders on them. Of course, a .44 mag from a blind at close range (35 yds) put a good thump on them too......I'll have to try and find the pics.
Good luck to all you hunters and hunt safely..... :D

Dove season starts Friday and quail around Nov 15. We are lottery system state for deer, elk, orxy and over-the-counter for other animals. I did not draw out on deer or elk, so I'll be doing dove and quail.

Mine is a Remington 700 and I like it a lot. Its great because where I hunt (open farm land) I mostly am looking at having to make 225 to 300 yard shots. It is very flat shooting. I have it zeroed in at 250 yards and with that caliber I can shoot from 15 yards out to 300 yards with no hold over. At 325 yards there is a 6 inch drop.
Here is what the ballistics look like for 150 gr bullet:
It has a pretty good bit of recoil - Probably along the lines of shooting a slug gun.... so its definitely not really meant to be a plinker. I try not to shoot it more then 5 or 6 shots in one sitting. Anything more then that and I notice that I am starting to anticipate the shot and I really don't want to get to the point of developing a flinch. Other then sighting it in, its basically something I only shoot when I got a nice whitetail in my scope.
It certainly does the job for deer, and can also take game up to Elk size, but it really all depends on what is best for you and your particular hunting situation.
*As a side note...... Remington is also now making reduced recoil loads for 7mm Mag that ballistically makes it perform exactly like a .270

Thanks, I am also thinking about the new 338 Fed. Read lot about both and am limited on the 338 as far as gun makers go. Price is about the same also. Ammo is alot less than the 7mag. I don't reload, "yet" and have heard the 338 Fed is tuff to get reloading supplies. With two other guys in hunting camp with 7mags going with it might be smart in case of a shortage of ammo.

Heck, we hunt just about everything you can think of here in Ga.....except the really big north American stuff like elk and moose. They even tried to bring in some blacktail deer a while ago, but I've never seen one here. We have some really nice whitetails though and it's been a while since I got one. My son got 6 last year.
We even have a bunch of wild turkeys taking up along the creek about 500 yds behind my place. I took pics this past spring of one about 100 yds behind the house.
Maybe I can ship you some hogs..... ;D ;D ;D ;D

All the .338 Fed is a legitimate .338-08 which has been around for a while. Nothing hard about reloading. Same powders (generally) you'd use in a .308Win. I really like it in my Tikka T3. I just liked the idea of having a little more frontal area than a .308.. I can use .308 cases and neck them up. Even some of the AR platforms now come in .338Fed. You are dependent on Federal if you want store bought ammo though.
My strategy is to stay with the .308 case. So initially at the ends of the spectrum, I have the .243 and the .338Fed. Then, if I feel the need to go in-between I'll go 7mm-08. And of course if I find myself filthy rich, I can add the .260 and the .308. Only thing missing is a .22-.23 caliber.

Here's a couple of pics of a 9-point taken by my son this evening (about 5:30 est) on our property here in south central Georgia.
He started not to go because his rifle was on the cleaning rack with the barrel saturated with Kroil and I wasn't finished cleaning it. So, my wife talked him into using her rifle and less than thirty minutes after he got into the blind this old boy walked out. It was a pretty old deer from the looks of him. Almost all his teeth were gone and his hair was graying.
Close range (< 50 yds) with a Remington Model 742 in .243 win.

Thanks. What type of game animals can you hunt in Peru? Do the game animals vary from country to country in South America like they do here from state to state? My next door neighbor went hunting for a week in Argentina last year, but all he hunted was doves.

yeah, it does vary.. here in Peru we have the Andes mt.s desert, and the Amazon. all kinds of weird stuff to kill in the jungle ;D . I'm still trying to find out what all is available, I know we have boar, deer, dove, etc. and I'm sure there's plenty of exotic stuff that would taste good too. not too many people hunt here so it's hard to get info on.

Thanks, all.
We have seen at least 2 other bucks with larger racks on our property behind our house. Luckily, we have 40 acres of our own and about another 60 that that is connected to ours that we have permission to hunt own. This one was taken on our 20 acre plot across the road from the house (half open field and half hardwoods). 8)

I am going to try to hunt ..AND film......... ::) Ex hubby is getting the stand all done and putting it on our land ..and this year it won't be any climbing a danged old tree and setting in it for hours freezing to death.. This year I am going to be hunting in comfort style.. ;D
I'm actually doe hunting this year.. not rack searching..as I want the meat to make into jerky..hamburger...except the back strap..and that of course is going straight into the skillet. ;)
Hopefully will have some pictures to post soon of the finished stand.

Good luck on the hunt. Going myself this afternoon. I actually hunted from the same blind as my son, only I was there the day before. I heard the buck but never saw him. I guess it's all just a matter of timing. I would not have taken the shot though. I've killed enough in my time to sit back and watch the next generation take the lead. I will bag a doe for the meat, though. Georgia wants hunters to focus on big does and older bucks to try to control a booming deer population. We're crawling with them.
I focus more on handgun hunting at close range now. Can't climb trees (never cared for that part anyway) so we built several enclosed blinds with windows all around to shoot from.
I take my 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum with 280gr Cor-Bon ammo at around 1400 fps. They will put a thumpin' on whatever they hit.

I went out early this morning to get a shot at the coyote that has been stalking my wife's cats. I was sitting against a big pasture rock overlooking the game trail with my AR, when Scarlett came up from behind and "woofed". She went after varmints as well, and had better luck than me.

243 Browning. I can also use a 270 Browning ( it has better knock down) but I have never had a problem with my 243 and I like it better.
One shot.. dead on.. one down deer.. Nothing to it.. ;)
Actually, I did have a problem one year with the "down part". I hunt totally by myself because I like the solitude..and if I want to move or stalk or whatever I can without worrying about anyone with me. I have had deer stands in the trees and also made my stands with hay bales and I have sat in old combines in the middle of the field.. in the top of barns ..and I have leaned against trees and also climbed trees (without a stand or ladder) Just depends on where I want to scope them out. This particular year I had started out at the edge of the bean field..where I had been watching them come in for a week or two to eat. The trail l behind them was some rocky timber with lots of sign ..rubs etc. Sat there the whole morning and that night and just a few doe come in.. Hmmmmmm... ??? So ... I moved my position through the timber..and right on the outside of the drop off to the river. They were using that to cross and it was heavy with fresh tracks. Wouldn't you know it that the only tree that could give me the view I wanted was in a damned huge old hedge tree. For those of you who are not familiar ... these are trees with big spiny short, stout thorns. NOT pleasant to climb.. unless there is an 11 point buck using the path.. THEN... you kind of cowgirl up and start the climb... and say to hell with the thorns ;D
So I did.. precariously..and hoping like hell I didn't drop my gun or get all snagged up and fall ....you know.. those idiot moves that sometimes happen.
Got up there and settled in with my butt all situated on this one branch...and proceeded to wait.
It was getting on into the very very late afternoon and was hoping I saw something within the next 30 minutes or so, or it would have been too dark to shoot.( legally ;) ) and I looked up and there the girls were. You know how you can be looking and watching and all of a sudden your eyes sweep back to the place that you were looking at 10 seconds before and there are deer all out in the field eating like they had been there forever? How is that possible? ( I think that they just come up from the middle of the ground :D )
Anyway.. there wasn't a buck anywhere ...but I knew the ole' boy was back there..waiting. I just felt it. I was just hoping it wouldn't be too dark to shoot when he decided to appear. I didn't move a muscle.. and wasn't long til he took one step out of the timber on the far side. It sure enough was the 11 point..and he was a dandy. He was only about 200 yds from me..and still kinda hidden in the brush and I would have liked him to be a bit closer ( but my butt was numb and I needed to move just a little so I could get my elbow on my knee) so I slowly got moved and ready..gun up.. eye on scope.. watching...........
He was leery for a bit , but then started moving and eating.. He turned broadside and my shot was there and I took it. Breathe..let it out..squeeze....It was perfect ( right in the zone) But instead of dropping like they always do... he kinda staggered and slowly turned and started walking going the other direction towards the cliff that dropped to the river.
I was wondering what the hell?? I knew I hadn't missed. He wasn't running or anything but he was making a B-line to the cliff.. so I did what any red blooded American girl would do to stop him.. I shot him in the ass and blew his balls off. THAT stopped him!
I climbed down and ran out there and he was sure enough dead this time. After I got him loaded ( which was a frickin' challenge as I had to put the rope on his horns and get in the truck and pull and heave and I finally got him loaded and headed back to town. He was HEAVY! ( I don't field dress as we have hoists and hangers in the game cleaning room with a floor drain and I like to gut and clean there so there isn't dirt and leaves etc inside it.) So when I started to clean and gut him and I had light.. I pulled out my 243 slug and it was flattened on a rib. THAT is why he only staggered. But the shot to the ass didn't flatten.. No sireee.. He knew he better die right then and there, cause the girls would never look at him the same way again if he lived... ;D ;D ;D ;D The end..
PS................. He dressed out over 200# so he was worth having. :D :D

This would give me a Heart Attack...that's for sure.. Probably couldn't have kept the heart beating from banging the cross hairs.. if I had a chance at a shot.. ;D Wow.....what a beauty... The buck called 'Heart Attack'
Some guys went on a deer capture in Uvalde county, Texas about 2 weeks ago and netted this deer, Heart Attack. He scored 248. He has 21 points,an inside spread of 32 inches and an outside spread of 34 inches. He is only 4 years old. If you hunt, that means something to you. If you don't, this will. They put a price tag on him of 1 million dollars.
Enjoy the photos.
There is one of him in velvet and the others are once they had him captured.

My son's friend got a nice 8 point and my son got a spike to go with his 9 point I posted earlier. They were thinning the population at his friends hunting club.
Edit: and to add insult to injury, he took the spike with my rifle (Browning A-Bolt in .308).

M'ette. I was wondering about you hunting with your ex, then I read about the second shot on the deer. I don't think Marshall needs to worry about any funny business.
What do you call it when you shoot a deer in the butt with a high powered rifle? A Texas head shot. If you have a big enough rifle it works.

I like that Scent Control. A friend of mine was complaining about the .270. He shot an elk in the scent control area and did not kill it so he wanted to get a super magnum to make sure. We had fun with that one.

Thirty point DEER (see photos below)
Shot by an Amish boy with hand made long bow:
This buck was taken by a 14 year old Amish boy near Dalton WI . He used a hand made long bow and made the killing shot by stalking the huge buck using corn shocks for cover. The boy's family would not allow him to pose with the trophy animal for pictures so a nearby neighbor, Willie Flacid posed and is also acting as spokesman for the Amish boy.
According to Flacid, the Amish family has already received several offers from outdoor sporting companies to purchase the trophy. No dollar amount has been announced yet, but according to Flacid, 'the amount of money being offered is enough that no one would ever be hard up again.'

WOW ! around here only one guy I know got a deer this year, and on his way home another one jumped in front of him, did $3000 damage to his van and ran off. Low kill numbers this year are being blamed on last years extreme snowfall and this years extreme cold, from Nov. 15 till the 23rd it never got above 24 here.

Picked up a cooler full of deer meat myself from processing house yesterday and dropped off another at the same time to be processed. We had it on ice for a week "bleeding it out".
Congrats again.

These 2 pictures were taken by a man in Grenola, KS. ( about 12 miles from me) He said they were taken with one of those new night cameras you leave in the woods. The date was October 2008 at about 10PM according to him. The area was South and East of Mulvane, KS. ( about40 minutes from me)
Game wardens have always said to all the locals that there ARE NO long tails in this area. ( I know different cause we saw one a couple years ago up in the rocks while deer hunting) Lots of guys have seen them .... but no pictures..
G Wardens also said it is against the law to shoot them too ( why are they worried about anyone shooting if they claim that there aren't any ::)
But these pictures pretty much proves it once and for all..that the cougars are alive and well in our area...

We have a big bunch of those longtails. People find tracks close to town pretty often. Within the last ten years, jaguars have been spotted in the southwestern part of the state. They used to range up into New Mexico and Arizona but were driven out by "civilization".

DNR says the same thing here about the big cats too (panthers in this neck of the woods).........but I've seen too many tracks and a few tail-ends moving in the woods over the years. They say there are a couple dozen left in the north Florida area but they would never venture up into south Georgia (didn't know the animals could read maps). My great grandmother told me when I was a small child that there were 'panthers' in the woods down on the Little River and along the creek behind our property.
DNR also said there were NO bears in south Georgia, but I've saw tracks on the river banks. And, a few years ago they even caught a black bear in town in a trash dumpster. Then the next year a black bear got hit by a car while crossing a bridge on our county line.
Experts don't know everything.

We had an area about 45 miles from where we live that it was estimated there were four mountain lions living. MN DNR swore up and down there was no such thing and compared it to big foot sightings. They then also gave us the same song and dance about being illegal to shoot them. How can it be illegal to shoot something that does not exist?
They had to change their story late one evening when a local farmer called the sheriff's department to report hitting "wild game" with his pick up (he used this term for a reason). A deputy, a state trouper and a conservation officer were all on his yard within half an hour looking at a huge mountain lion wedged under the front axle.

Here's a parting shot, and one you will not believe, but it is true with over 1/2 dozen witnesses who heard the only shot.
OK, ladies and gentlemen, here's a 'magic bullet' story for you. My wife decided to go hunting down behind the house since the season is winding down to a close in a week or so and we could use a little ore meat in the freezer. Well, two deer stepped out into the open. She waited to see if a bigger buck might come out and when none appeared, she sighted in on the larger of these two. When she shot, the .243 bullet hit right behind the shoulder (she hit her mark dead on). The bullet went through the heart and lungs, bounced of the far side ribcage, came out of the first deer (on the same side it went in on) and hit the other smaller deer (which was standing 5 yards in FRONT, and slightly offset) in the neck, dropping it also. There's the 'magic bullet' part. She shot the back one and killed it along with the one off to the front right too. Yep, boys and girls, TWO DEER WITH ONE SHOT (of course the second was not originally MEANT to be killed), but both deer went down cleanly on the spot and it is good meat for the freezer.
She said she WILL be offering 'hunting lessons' next year.
***NOTE: Not to bag on the .243, it's a good round, but this is why I prefer a .30 cal hunting round.
:o

Heck I'd send you some if I could find a place around here to buy dry ice. We have one place that gets a limited amount of pellets in from time to time, but not regularly.
My neighbor got two with one shot from a 30-30 about ten years ago, but they were lined up one behind the other and the bullet went through one and into the other.
My wife shot the first one and both fell. She called me on the radio (still in the stand) and said she shot one and it must have scared the other one to death because they both went down at the shot.

PegLeg,
Congrats to the wife, and enjoy the meat.
What happened with that bullet, and JumboFrank's story are examples that it is as much the bullet as it is the caliber. My .22-250 is a great long range varmint gun, but I have learned to use lightweight hollow points in it. With light hides and little other resistance you need a bullet that will fall apart easily and quickly on fox and coyote. If I use FMJ or even SP, or if I get too heavy the bullet will blow right through without giving the knockdown shock, or just as bad "explode" inside and take all the hide off with the exit hole.
USPSA shooting has done more to educate me for hunting than anything else. Figuring power factors finally turned the light bulb on that made me look at energy. I combined that with what I had learned about bullet characteristics, and I am now much better (not perfect) at picking rounds for animals. The down side is that most stores just stock whatever they think will sell the best, and it can be frustrating trying to find the cartridge you think is really best for your needs.

Yes, the bullet absolutely makes the difference. I prefer a heavier bullet, but the biggest factory ammo you can get around here is 100 to 105 gr in .243. I'm going to do some reloading in the off season and test some heavier bullets. I thing Barnes makes a heavy .243. She was using Remington 100 grain Core-Lokt ammo. So far this year (first year using them) they have anchored five deer for us collectively (including the one below that my son took yesterday afternoon) with one-shot stops in their tracks. The Core-Lokt ammo seems to do the trick. My wife and youngest son have taken five deer with four shots. That's called maximizing ammo productivity. ;)
My son took this doe (DNR wants the doe herd thinned) yesterday afternoon with my A-Bolt .308 with 150 gr Core-Lokts. We just bought a new upright freezer, now I think it's gonna be full.

Boar hog 350 - 400lbs, with a .223, 1st shot in the neck took him down, but he did get back up, 4 fast shots put him down for good. 100 yards with an AR15, with an aimpoint, comp C3, I know it's obvious from the picture ;) The picture was taken the next morning, after the buzzards were having their way with him. Forgot the camera on the evening hunt. Helping a friend exterminate some really destructive vermin.

Dang, m25,.......that's one big nasty rooter. They don't get nearly that big in these parts. We had a big pack of wild hogs roaming up and down along the creek about 500 yds behind our house two years ago. The biggest one was around 200 pounds. but there was a lot of them. They nearly destroyed our neighbors entire corn field. They were quick too, could hardly get a shot at them so we had to start trapping them in cage traps.
Congrats on the nice kill.

JumboFrank....
Is it still illegal in MI to hunt with a .22 caliber for whitetail? Also, what about tree stands?
The old laws didn't allow a rifle hunter to be more than six feet off the ground, back in the 1970's I mean!
Just curious...I never hunted with anything smaller than a .30-30 with iron sights. No need for a scope in a cedar swamp...100 yards was a long shot....

The rules change every year. This is accurate until the middle of the year. It's only about a page from the 48 page rule book.
Raised Platforms and Tree Stands
The following persons may hunt from a raised platform or tree stand: All bow and crossbow hunters. Bear and deer hunters when using a firearm. Fox and coyote hunters from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. All other firearm hunters are prohibited from using a raised platform or tree stand. A raised platform means a horizontal surface constructed or manufactured by a person that increases the field of vision of a person using the horizontal surface beyond the field of vision that normally would be attained by that person standing on the ground. If you hunt on public land, your tree stand must be portable and your name and address must be affixed in legible English that can be easily read from the ground. Hunting platforms cannot be affi xed or attached to any tree by nails, screws or bolts; however, a “T” bolt or similar device supplied by a tree stand manufacturer can be used. Screw-in tree steps are illegal on public lands. It is illegal to use any item that penetrates through the bark of a tree in the construction or affixing of any device to assist in climbing a tree. Scaffolds, raised platforms, ladders, steps and any other device to assist in climbing a tree cannot be placed on public lands any earlier than Sept. 1, and must be removed by March 1. A permanent raised platform or tree stand may be used for hunting on private land with the permission of the landowner. It is unlawful to use an illegal tree stand, scaffold, step, etc., regardless of who placed it on public lands. Your name on a tree stand or ground blind on public land does not guarantee exclusive use.
All Firearm Deer Seasons - Rifle Zone
In the rifle zone, deer may be taken with handguns, rifles, bows and arrows, shotguns and muzzleloading firearms including black powder handguns. It is legal to hunt deer in the rifle zone with any caliber of firearm except a .22 caliber or smaller rimfire (rifle or handgun). Crossbows are legal to use by a person 12 years of age or older during the Nov. 15-30 firearm deer season. During the firearm deer seasons, a firearm deer hunter may carry afield a bow and arrow and firearm.
Exception: See Muzzleloading Deer Seasons for restrictions during this season.
All Firearm Deer Seasons - Shotgun Zone
In the shotgun zone, all hunters afield from Nov. 15-30, and all deer hunters in this zone during other deer seasons, must abide by the following firearm restrictions or use a bow and arrow. Crossbows are legal to use by a person 12 years of age or older during the Nov. 15-30 fi rearm deer season. Legal firearms are as follows: A shotgun may have a smooth or rifled barrel and may be of any gauge. A muzzleloading rifle or black powder handgun must be loaded with black powder or a commercially manufactured black powder substitute. A conventional (smokeless powder) handgun must be .35 caliber or larger and loaded with straight-walled cartridges and may be single- or multiple-shot but cannot exceed a maximum capacity of nine rounds in the barrel and magazine combined. During the firearm deer seasons, a firearm deer hunter may carry afield a bow and arrow and firearm.
Exception: See Muzzleloading Deer Seasons for restrictions during this season. From Nov. 15-30, .22 caliber or smaller rimfire rifles and handguns may be used to kill raccoon while hunting raccoons with dogs between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Thanks Frank...
Is M-50 still the line for rifle/shotgun? Most everything else has changed in the last thirty years as I would have expected.
We are limited to shotgun/muzzleloader only for deer in MA although you can use a muzzleloader for the shotgun season as well. As long as they are not the replaceable barrel types (centerfire), that would constitute a "rifle". We can hunt coyote and bear with a rifle in the western part of the state provided you have the minimum acreage required by statute.
Biggest problem...NO HUNTING of any kind on Sunday...
Title: Re: Hunting Season 2008
Post by: Big Frank on January 07, 2009, 08:21:42 PM
Umm... no. It's hard to make sense out of and the line zig-zags up and down a little as it goes through about 8 counties. The line between zone 2 and 3 is even more screwed up.
Michigan also is divided into a northern rifle zone where rifles may used for firearm deer hunting and a southern shotgun zone where only shotguns, muzzleloading firearms and certain handguns may be used for deer hunting (see page 11). The dividing line between the northern rifle deer hunting zone and the southern shotgun zone is as follows: Starting at a point on the Lake Michigan shoreline directly west of M-46, then easterly to M-46, then easterly along M-46 to US-131 at Cedar Springs, southerly on US-131 to M-57, easterly on M-57 to Montcalm Road on the Kent-Montcalm county line, southerly on Montcalm Road and the Kent-Ionia county line to M-44, easterly on M-44 to M-66, northerly on M-66 to M-57, easterly on M-57 to M-52 near Chesaning, northerly on M-52 to M-46, easterly on M-46 to M-47, northerly on M-47 to US-10 west of Bay City, easterly on US-10 to I-75, northerly on I-75 and US-23 to Beaver Road (about 1 mile north of Kawkawlin), easterly to Saginaw Bay, north 50 degrees east to the International Boundary.

Duh, I did mean M-46. I remember it was more or less a east/west line from Sagainaw to Whitehall on Lake Michigan. I hunted almost exclusively on my uncles 1000 acres outside of Leroy on old 31. Must have planted well over a million pine trees on the property in the 60's and 70's with all my brothers and cousins.
Eventually he made the place into a cross country ski area and retired from GM.

Shooter 32, I have only used my EBR for backup and hog hunting at this point, I did not intend to use it for this hunt as I brought bigger badder rifles, but my host said, " ready to hunt, bring something light and fast." The light AR's are becoming my favorites though. All my AR's are .223, but my biggest buck was taken with a .223, same deal, did not intend to deer hunt with it, loaned my 7mm08 to the wife and I went turkey hunting, big surprise, My net 151" B&C buck came up, I said to myself, if you shoot ???, shoot for the neck. The rest is history ;D. Pics to follow. Bullet - 55 grain Barnes X, strong medicine.
If you do your homework, as you should with any rifle or pistol, if it is capable of hunting accuracy and you know what it can do, the firearm itself matters not, I have 6 AR's, and 5 group nicely in an inch or less, at 100 yards. I have 2 M1A's that shoot 1 - 2 " at 100 yards, but can shoot 4-5" at 300 yards, very capable. I would use these for elk if the opportunity arose, within a reasonable distance, like 300 yards or less.

Too embarassed to post my score. The part where you need to reload after 2 shots really threw me and cost me the 3rd deer.

I know it was a 2008 hunting thread and it has rolled on into 2009, but I figured I'd just post this here instead of starting a new thread.
My youngest and his friend both got their first turkeys today. They were about a mile from the house. The photo doesn't do the birds justice as they were very nice looking and heavy.

Congratulate the younuns for me Pegleg!
Turkey hunting is something that never appealed to me, until the return of turkeys to the area. Now I see them more and more, and I have had a couple of meals of the wild stuff. I'm ready to enjoy the woods in the spring time some day.

Nice? Maybe...but were they tactical turkeys? fightingquaker13
As a matter of fact...yes they were. Both had flak jackets (requiring head shots to neutralize), NVG's, flash-bangs, 9mm MP5's with spare ammo, tear gas, 3 flashlights, 4 pocket knives...........and spurs.
Badass turkeys................
Yep.
;D

I call that added value. Who knew you could get so much cool stuff just by whacking a few birds? ;D

Yep, we'll put on a feast.....this past year was a good hunting season. We have two freezers full of deer, duck, goose, hog, and now turkey. No doves this year. didn't get to go dove hunting.
I guess as long as we can shoot, we can eat. ;)

Cool. You can only hunt turkey with a bow around here. Crazy laws where I live that state you cannot hunt deer with a rifle but you can shoot a coyote with one. Hunting land is getting hard to find around here and just lost the place I hunt due to a divorce. ???

Peg,
Is that invitation for a deer hunt still open? I would love to take a couple of days and get some meat. When is the season there?

Shoot yeah. Rifle season usually opens around the third weekend in October and runs through the second weekend in January. The man that owns some of the property that we have hunting rights on is in foreclosure right now and he may loose the land. My family has had hunting rights to his property for as long as I can remember, so I hope he finds a way to keep it. If not my dad is thinking about trying to buy some of it. Hope that don't make me sound like a vulture, I really hope his family gets to keep their land, it's been in their family for generations.
Either way we still have 40 acres and can probably find a place for ya. Can't guarantee you'd get one but it'd be fun trying. ;)
