I have a 91 f350 4wd diesel stick truck that never leaves my property. It is has more rust then sheet metal. 400k miles.... It is good for exactly what I use it for, basicly a big wheel barrow and stump puller. That being said the tires on it are rotting off. So I call up the local chain tire store, I need a set of ms tires for my ranch truck, it never leaves the property. He goes on about how this is the best of the best and this wear pattern, this is quiet on the road etc etc. I Don't want or need any of that stuff, it's a ranch truck.... "well this is what i recomend for your truck. The cheapest set I would recommend is 1500" *click* call the local used tire place, i need tires for mu ranch truck. The guy asks " Does it ever leave your peoperty" "no" " Well I have 2 pair in that size that will work great for you and should last at least a few years in the dirt" "great, how much?" "$180 out the door"
So now here is where it gets interesting, I am at the place now, the "guy" I talked too is a 17 year old son of the owner that graduated bs early, already joined the marines and is doing the install on the tires now. It makes me proud that a young kid actually has his head on strait and has a plan for his life. I am going too do the $100 hand shake thing with him after I pay.
It is not often I am impressed with young people, but this kid impressed me. I hope he takes his gf out and gets laid lol

Best tip I ever got was a twenty for spin balancing an Eldorado’s tires and wheels, on the car, at as fast as I could spin em with the old spin machines of the sixties!
I figure the machine probably spun em up to about 120mph!
You could put a full glass of water on the hood and barely see the ripple!!

Why did spin balancing fall off? It sure seems like a better practice to balance the wheels where and as they will be used?

I wondered that myself because it balanced the entire rotating mass of the corner of the auto at the same time!
Now it’s just the wheel and tire..
Ain’t balanced a tire in near 43 years now. I was damn good with the bubble balancer, too but it was better on the car!

I never heard of balancing wheels while they're still on the car. YouTube has videos of guys doing it with 2 different kind of machines.
And the guy trying to sell TAB tires that are quiet on the road after being told it will never be on the road was an idiot. It's a good thing there are still some people around who listen to the customer.

I learned how to spin balance on the car, and it was I always did when I had the chance. I believe that the new spin balancers do a good job, and modern technology has made for rotating mass that is balanced. But, through the 80's, as late as I was involved in shop work, on the car was the best.
I always used a machine that was shaped like a push mower with a steel drum in the front and a flat plate that you used to stop the tire. There was a steel band with knobs that went into the rim and locked in with friction, and a "flying saucer" that clamped to the knobs. There was a shaft with four rings on it that came out of the middle. As the tire spun you would hold each knob to add or subtract weight (two knobs) and the other two knobs were to move the weight around on the wheel. When the wheel stopped you looked at the numbers and arrows for weight placement.

Got a nail yesterday, put my full sized spare on, drove to the shop this morning. I got there at 10 minutes till 7. The tire shop does not open till 8. I had some phone calls to make so I just hung out in the parking lot. About 5 minutes after 7 the owner and the kids show up. They both come over and ask me what's up, shake my hand like a man should, and thanked me for my patronage. Even though it was still almost an hour till they opened up they grabbed the tire and immediately started to work on it. They did the full plug and patch, and even dump the tire in a water tank to check for leaks. When was the last time you actually saw someone do that?
They refused to take payment from me. I think I've just found my new tire source.

At a lot of places you can't see them do anything, because you aren't allowed into the garage area of the business. I don't know if they dunk the tires or not. They may spray the repaired area, if they do anything at all.

The motive of any business, no doubt, is to earn money from their customers. Some take the path of squeezing every nickle possible from them, others feel that providing good customer service will earn them income over the long haul..

yep, I always tell people in the service industry, sell yourself, they can get your services anywhere.

I bought one use car in my life from a Chevy dealer. When I figured out there was a problem with it I took it to a different Chevy dealer who told me it had been in a crash, even though the salesperson said there was nothing wrong with it. I traded it in for a new one and never went back to the other dealer again. I previously bought 2 trucks from the honest dealer and will buy my next one there too. They must be doing something right to be in business for over 90 years.
