Title: Tequila's' Mini-Sharps .454
Post by: Hazcat on September 21, 2008, 07:23:06 AM
Not to bring up a 'controversial' subject but I was impressed with the performance of the .454.  The gun itself was really beautiful and looked to be well made and handy as heck!  Love the set trigger set up.

BUT what really got me was the way that animal dropped at 100 yards!  That round really hammered him.  Makes me feel like my Puma .454 lever gun is all the 'big game' gun I'll ever need.

What y'all think?  Grizzly, cape buff, etc.?

I was in class, missed the episode, and the TV with the DVR has been usurped by a 2-year old, so I haven't seen the shot yet.

But, and not trying to burst your bubble, I dropped my buffalo bison - well under 100 yards - with a lever Marlin 30-30. Shot placement is everything

Don't fib to me, Path!  I see that pin in your trying to hide!  ;D

I saw a hunt where Tom Kelly from S&W dropped a Grizzly or Brown (not sure which) from about 75 yards with a 6" PC 500.  Given the barrel length, and knowing what mine throws for unburnt powder I would think your Puma could out preform.

Beg, borrow or steal a crony, and do some math.  Not to discount Pathfinder's success with a 30-30, but when caliber shopping there is always someone telling you that a certain animal is an easy kill.  I remember shopping for a big game gun and using a list of deer, to elk and moose, to Grizzly.  Everyone said not to worry about a moose, because they are an easy kill.  I trusted this until I talked to a couple friends that were on a moose hunt while I was shopping.  They put three 270's in a moose before the other's 30-06 took it down the next day.  Shot placement and energy are both needed.

One advantage I think the .454 will have over my .500 is bullet shape.  The .500 has a lot of power and a lot  of mass, but it is not very aero dynamic.  It reminds me more of a shotgun slug than a bullet like the .454 has.  That said, I am hitting a 20lb lp tank at 100 yards and all the way out to 200 yards off a rest.

M58,

I have a chrony that I have used on both my sons' 626 S&W 44 and his Puma 44 as well as my Redhawk 45 (5.5) and my Pume 454 / 45.

For each with same ammo I gain at least 300 fps.  I don't have a .454 handgun but I would say that the gane would be at least similar.

They no longer make my exact model.  I have a blued 18" ported barrel, came with HiViz sights but I replaced them with a peep (sitting where the safety used to be) and a regular blade front.

We have ... errrrrr ... had a good chrony until I ooooopsed one day with my race gun.  Do you know that if you hit the wire holding the skyscreen up you really do a number on the electronics?  Apparently I could just as well slammed in on the concrete.

FYI, just so you don't need to try it, a 155 gr, .45 semi wad cutter pushed at about 1250 fps will cut the wires stands on a Beta-Chrony and send the pieces about 25 feet in opposite directions.

I want one, but I'm going to have to step back for a while ... I'm drooling all over the keyboard  :o

What does it say about you when you reach the point in you life that you glance at Miss Chess Champ occasionally, but gawk and stare and drool over guns every chance you get?

Pin, what pin? I don't have a pin, honest. Oh, this thing, well, um, uh, well, that's the new needle for my antique needle gun. Yeah, that's it

Note to self - go get a needle gun . . .

Wonder what Miss Chess Champ looks like.  I am 66 and still drool and gawk over good looking women.  Do the same for guns and horses.

That just means your not shooting enough...

Out of all my hobbys, shooting is by far the cheapest... Then again... I get paid ( some times) for one of my hobbys.

MB,

You lost me there. (http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/fragend/confused-smiley-013.gif)

I put 'controversial' in scare quotes cause it was supposed to be sarcastic.  And the gun is COOL!  Been looking for a link to the Mfg on here but can't find it.

I was going for obscure post-modern ironism...maybe I need to go back to community college and take a course in Samuel Beckett, Woody Allen, Woody Harrelson and the American Experience...and yes, it was a cool little gun, and the DAMN BUFFALO went down like it it was hit with a, well, bolt gun in the head. The .454 is a great cartridge, I think...good for everything up to and including velociraptors and rampaging garbage trucks...of course, I don't condone the senseless slaughter of things that may or may not be animals, plants, friendly minerals, household appliances, bicycles, dolphins, aliens, panda cubs, wireless mobile devices, lingerie, PVC pipe, puppies, kittens and, of course, TaTonka, the great and a sacred American bison, which is available with cheese, tomatoes, onions and special sauce in Ted's Montana Grills nationwide...

I just used the locator...closest one to me is Broad St. in Philadelphia, the city of Brotherly love(as in, Cain and Able).
I wonder if Mayor Nutter eats TaTonka Burgers?

Haz,
Have you hunted with it yet? I love all the lever guns. Don't know alot about the .454 but it lays the hammer down!!

Moose, elk, mule deer, bear, anything out my way it will do the job on.
