Is this normal for a striker fired sidearm? I know what it means with my 1911s, but this is a different animal for me. Smear runs a little less than halfway from the strike to the edge of the primer, and a similar smear is on the test round provided with the pistol.

Is there play in the hole the firing pin (striker, whatever) passes through ? If the pin is not broken, and it still goes bang every time, I would not worry about it. But I could be wrong.

Thanks, Tom. Google finally worked and it seems its common. Oh, and Haz has a long lost brother, lol.
Found this exchange:
Hey Everyone,
I'm new to the forum. I recently recieved a new SA XD .40 bi-tone from my father-in-law to be.
We went to his backyard range and fired a few clips, and we noticed the primer markings were a little abnormal looking. We don't know if the firing pin is recoiling incorrectly or what, but i'm including a link to a pic below.

If anyone knows what the prob is, and how we can fix it, that'd be great. Thanks for the info.

OH and what you are seeing on the primers is completely normal.

Yes, but he was talking about a XD ;D
-
Glad to hear it.

I didn't know it was normal for primers to look like that in any gun.

I still don't think it's normal. To quote Jake Roedel in Ride with the Devil, "It ain't right and it ain't wrong. It just is."
-
Don't know a whole lot about it but what if it rode further over and started striking the brass, you'd be in trouble then.
-
Yes this is normal. I have seen it before with XD's, Glock's, and some S&W's. All of the mentioned shot fine and continue to shoot fine. So, as far as I know it is fine. Some of mine do it and it hasn't been a problem yet. First time I saw it I wondered myself about it.. but the guns and accuracy didn't show any other signs of problems or damage. That is my .02.

Talked to Springfield when I ordered two recoil assemblies and it is common for the XD, as is the little diagonal dent on the fired casings. Spinning and hitting the ejection port on the latter.
The new normal.

The left picture gives me pause, as you can see the primer flowing back into the firing pin exit hole, that is usually a sign of overpressure. Both primers having the little divot off the center mark, to me as a gunsmith, says the action is unlocking before the bullet has exited completely from the muzzle, If you came to me with this problem, I would tell you to try alternate ammo, and maybe install a heavier mainspring, after examining your pistol first of course, finding no obvious flaws in the action. I have not found this normal with Glocks, even shooting nuclear loads in my model 20, flattened out primers, oh yeah, but not that dragging of the firing pin across the primer. Something keeping the firing pin from returning quickly could do it as well, which could lead to full auto. If this is normal, I would like to know why???
