Title: PARA GI Expert
Post by: sanjuancb on February 03, 2009, 05:07:13 PM
Relatively soon I am going to be in the market for another handgun. I know that MB had a blog on the PARA GI Expert a while back and that he liked the gun, but it had a few problems. Does anyone have any experience with one? I've wanted a 1911 for eons and if Oklahoma passes HB 1414 (Open Carry) I wouldn't have to worry about concealing it. The pistol itself seems affordable and according to MB the trigger is excellent. Any thoughts?

I think MB got number 2 off the assembly line, I don't think they will be in stores for a while.

Oh, Cool.Based on listening to people complain about Rugers for the past year I would not think of buying one till AT LEAST 2010 or 11. But that's just me.

tom...got to agree.  Everything I want isn't out yet (and may never come out) so I'm not sure what to do.

Richard

PS:  This isn't anything against Para, I already have 2...it's just a new gun thing.

Spend another 100 bucks and buy another proven model PARA makes.  You won't be disappointed.  The GI is very basic, like the GI Springfield or Colt but includes the bigger extractor.

Ugh...I am not going to have the money to do such...

Anyone have experience with the Springfield Mil Spec?

The Springfield Mil-Spec is basic military issue 1911-A1 just like I used in the military thirty years ago except we had the Colt models.  Nothing fancy but a good basic gun just like the Colt or Para.  All of the military grade pistols are full of sharp edges, will bite the web of your hand and make you bleed a little until you wear the sharp edges down.  Not something I personally would want to carry every day.

They are a blast to shoot though!!!

Take a hard look at Taurus as well.  I've read nothing but good things about their basic 1911 and the money is right in your budget.

Isn't the GI Expert just a design that has already been marketed by Para, but with fewer bell and whistles? I want one!

That's what it looks like on their site..bigger extractor but everything else is pretty basic.

I paid about 700 bucks for my Para back in July and it has all the bells and whistles, tactical safety, skeletonized hammer, match grade ramped barrel and trigger assembly, power extractor, everything!  As I've said, it's far more accurate than I am.

I would think that the MSRP of the GI Expert at 599 could be bought for about 450 bucks retail.  It's pretty basic like the Springfield or Colt and I've seen the Colt A1 down at Cabelas in Hartford for 475...

What model is it? Does it have checkering on the front of the grip?

Dows anyone know if there will be a stainless GI Expert?

I have the LTC in alloy and no, the front strap is smooth though I don't notice any problems with grip.  I have several thousand rounds through it and one afternoon in the fall when it was raining at the range, never slipped at all.

I think that for the money, you can't beat the Para line of guns.  Match grade accuracy for under a grand?  I did a lot of research before I bought the gun and I've nothing negative to say about it.

Good to know. I've always wanted a single stack. I have an early P-13, and while it has always had feed problems, I felt pretty sure that what they're putting out now is good stuff. My accuracy is good with my old gun and I think my problems are mainly a combination of shooter error and not ever having given it enough of a chance to be broken in. I was spoiled by Glock and I should have gotten a full length to begin with.

There's Eric with his Glock radar!  You know Eric, I'm gonna buy one of those damn things just so I can say I did!

In MA, they gotta be used though.  Gonna have kooties all over em but you can buy one of those Glock cleaning buckets to clean the previous owners kooties off em...

I put 40 dollars down on a Para GI Expert today.  The price including tax is $519.39.  Not too shabby.
I'll pick it up in about 3 weeks.

Next 1911 I get, I think I want to get one of the Springfield Lightweight Operator Champions. But then again, the next one I want is almost never the actual next one I buy.......

I had some initial problems with the one I had, mostly light primer hits, but it was #2 off the line after all...yeah yeah, I'll catch crap on the other forums for not calling jihad on Para...instead, I sent it back to Para...they replaced a few pieces of the fire control system (firing pin and sear) and now it's fine.

I'm going to keep it because it is one of the most accurate 1911s that has floated through here in a while, and I'm thinking of turning it into my dedicated Wild Bunch 1911 for End of Trail this June. I was shooting Winchester ball, and it was like running a stapler. Para told me it's going to be mid-summer before they fill the pipeline on the Experts, with the move to Charlotte and all and the very high demand for the gun (hard to argue with that price point).

I have a SA 1911 mil spec and i love it more than any other gun i own. Out of the box it shot great and no break in period, thats what counts to me.  I shot 210 rounds in one outing, my gun rocks. ;D

I wanted one of these but my ffl called 12 wholesalers today and none have it in stock. Even when he called Para Customer Service they were worthless in telling him where he could order one. So looks like the money goes to another company that wants to sell their product!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be patient, Para is moving their operation to Charlotte.  May take a little time....

I've had mine for about 3 weeks. I paid $489 + tax ( a little over $519). I got the first my local gun shop
got in. They had for a few weeks before I bought it. IMO, the gun looks really nice. The only things I'm
planning to change is the mainspring housing (it's plastic) and the grips.
I'm not much on plastic on guns.
Yes, it is a basic gun. I ,for one, am glad that Para has finally got back to a basic model, one that many
beginners and older shooters can use and afford.
I own 3-4 other Paras.
