Title: BHO kills concealed carry in National Parks
Post by: 1776 Rebel on April 19, 2009, 02:31:44 PM
You've got to give the boy king credit where credit is do. Just like when kids are playing chicken, he stopped right when the latest court declared the Bush ruling of carrying in National Parks illegal....dang he is one smart Chicago pol...

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- The Obama administration won’t challenge a court ruling that prohibits visitors at some national parks to carry loaded concealed firearms, satisfying gun control groups.

The Interior Department said in a court filing yesterday that it will uphold a U.S. District Judge’s decision to reinstate 26-year-old restrictions on loaded guns in national parks and will conduct a full environmental review of a Bush administration regulation allowing the weapons.

Unless you use the Clinton approach,

Don't Ask, Don't Tell...

I'm sure the criminals that go to the parks will adhere to the rulng as well.......

Signs at the gate should read:

Welcome Victims!
Rules of Yosemite National Park.

Please comply with all criminal demands for your camera's cash, jewelry, food, and let them have their way with your wife and daughters.

Our studies have shown that you have a decent probability of surviving by appeasing your attacker.

Wild animals attack so infrequently, that you should not be in any danger. Play dead for the bears,...

Thank you, have a nice visit.

How about a big Rambo style knife? or Chinese throwing stars? or a tactical sling shot? are they banned also?

I'll just not go into National parks.
And, I'm sending letters to everyone I can think of and telling them that if I can't protect myself in the parks, I just won't go.

This has been the rule from the time I was born. Hypothetically speaking, has it ever stopped anyone from sticking a handgun in their car/back pack? ..crickets....coughing...taking of the fifth all around. 8)
I don't like the move and would love to see the rule overturned, but I will only say that most people's camping style will not effected.

In my younger days I did a portion of the Appalachian Trail. Up in New Hampshire I remember that there was an 8" length restriction (on knives :) ) in the Presidential range (national forest or national wilderness I can't remember which). Does anyone know if this is still the case?

Yes, but now would be the time to make a point of the absurdity of the ruling, since it's in the limelight.
I've always had a gun in the vehicle when visiting parks (I don't think that was illegal, just CCW...someone correct me if I'm wrong). I just kept it locked in a case while in the park.
Closest to me is Andersonville and the last time I was there I just locked it in the truck.

Andersonville is a National Historic Site.   (Help me with the difference.)

One of the problems is where local, public roads traverse park property, as is the case here with Kennesaw National Battlefield Park.  Technically every time I drive through the park on a state road, I'm in violation of the law.

In a true renegade, rebellious, DRTV Ranger, American Way!

This is preposterous!.

Teddy Roosevelt, who used to target shoot on the White House lawn, is rolling over in his grave.

It is run by the National Park Service.....at least one would think so since it portals through their management service.  ??

It depends on the park and each one has different guidelines for firearms from 'none allowed' to 'may be transported if locked and unloaded'.

Anybody??

Amazing how laws can still change from state to state, Uwharrie National Park issues hunting permits.

http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/uwharrie/index.htm

Dedicated by JFK, in 1961, but subsidized and run by the NC Dept. of Wildlife and Resources, it issues hunting permits on FEDERAL LAND, and camping (which I have done often) was no problem with OPEN carry.

Told so by a NC Wildlife Officer.

I don't know, I'm sure its confusing for a reason.

Pisgah Nat. Forest. as I recall, (maybe wrong) doesn;t allow hunting or shooting. Although our group for a 10 day canoe trip, had weapons which we discharged for a nasty possum (possibly rabid), that hissed up to our camp during the day no less, and was dropped by a .45LC Ruger.

Don;t know about the other states....

Just offering my .02 cents that PegLeg will have the drop on with both barrels. (bottom avatar) ::)

There's not really a lot of consistency from one park to another regarding helpful info.

As Alf pointed out, in Kennesaw, guns of any type are a no no and they have it on the web page.
http://www.nps.gov/kemo/planyourvisit/yoursafety.htm

In General:

    * If possible, always carry a cell phone.
    * Please, do not play on cannons, these are original pieces and can be dangerous if and when you fall off.
    * Explosives, fireworks, firearms and other weapons are not permitted at any time.
    * Pick up a map or brochure before venturing into the Battlefield and on to the trails.
    * Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
    * STAY ALERT at all times!
    * If you see anything suspicious, call 911 immediately.

But on several other Georgia pages, there is no info at all concerning firearms.

I guess it's best to just call ahead and hope the person you talk to has all their marbles in one sock.

What other Federal properties is CCW prohibited?  Is there a list somewhere?  I suspect you can't carry in Federal Court Houses. but what about other places?

This does raise an interesting legal question though. What are the penalties? As far as post offices, court house, military facilties etc., these are statutory crimes. Go to jail. The parks, its just a rule. Is it a criminal violation, or just an infraction, like lighting an unauthorized campfire that will get you chucked out with a fine? I'm not a lawyer and don't know enough to research it but I would be curious to know. If I'm just going to get scolded and pay a $100 fine if I'm caught, it's one thing. If Ranger Rick is going to get out the cuffs, its another. Anyone?

Regardless of State law, it's considered "criminal possesion of a firearm".  Having a license in your respective state doesn't exempt you from a felony prosecution in Federal court.  Post offices, court houses, national parks....etc...INCLUDE parking lots...

Some states follow the Feds....some just require you to inform Ranger Ricky that you're carrying...CHECK your state regs...Believe it or not, MA lets me carry unless I'm actively hunting.  Then, I cannot have any ammunition on my person that doesn't match the firearm I'm using at the time.  NO EXCEPTIONS...!!!!!

It will affect the remainder of your life, conviction or not...ALWAYS talk to an attorney BEFORE you talk to anyone else...

Seems pretty silly...ya can't carry a firearm while touring the Springfield Armory!
